That mix gave silver more upside torque than gold’s broader, deeper market. Silver later exceeded $121 an ounce on January 29, 2026, then sold off sharply. The evidence supports an explanation of that rally—not a claim that silver still had a higher year-to-date return than gold on September 30, 2026.
What happened to silver prices?
Silver started 2025 below $29 an ounce and reached $84 in December, while its 2025 average price increased 42% year over year, according to the Silver Institute’s World Silver Survey 2026 (report PDF). The rally extended into 2026: the institute reported a high above $121 an ounce on January 29.
That peak is a historical high, not a current quote. Prices then fell sharply. A September 23, 2026 GoldPrice.org snapshot showed silver at $64.45 an ounce and gold at $4,287.09, with a gold-silver ratio of 66.43 (dated snapshot). It is not a September 30 closing price, and it cannot establish matched year-to-date performance.
Why silver rose faster than gold
Physical demand met tight availability
The Silver Institute linked the late-2025 surge to exceptionally strong physical demand, lower inventories and metal moving out of London or into exchange-traded products. Those flows lifted lease rates and contributed to a liquidity squeeze in October 2025. Coin and net-bar demand increased 14% in 2025 (Silver Institute summary).

A deficit means annual demand exceeded newly supplied metal; it does not mean every user faced an immediate shortage. Existing above-ground inventories can bridge that gap, but when readily deliverable stocks are tight, relatively small changes in buying can move prices substantially.
Industrial use adds cyclical upside
Silver is used in electrical and electronic equipment, photovoltaic cells, automobiles, power grids, brazing alloys and other manufacturing. Expectations for AI infrastructure, vehicle production and grid investment supported prices. However, industrial demand is not a one-way growth engine: 2025 industrial demand fell 3% to 657.4 million ounces as photovoltaic manufacturers accelerated material thrifting and substitution and some other uses weakened (Silver Institute summary).

That industrial exposure gives silver more economic sensitivity than gold. In a manufacturing upswing it can amplify gains; in a slowdown, weaker orders can remove support quickly.
Investment flows changed direction
As silver began outperforming, investors rotated attention toward it. Total 2025 demand was 1,130.6 million ounces, down 2%, yet the market still recorded a 40.3 million-ounce (1,252-tonne) deficit. Mine production rose 3% to 846.6 million ounces and recycling rose 2% to 197.6 million ounces, increases that still did not fully cover demand (World Silver Survey 2026; Silver Institute summary).

Forecasts illustrate how quickly expectations can shift. The Silver Institute’s February 2026 outlook projected a 67 million-ounce 2026 deficit and physical investment up 20% to 227 million ounces (February outlook). Its April survey summary later projected a 46.3 million-ounce deficit and an 18% increase in coin and net-bar demand (April summary). These are successive estimates, not realized results.
Silver and gold play different roles
| Factor | Silver | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Demand mix | Large industrial component plus investment and jewelry demand; more cyclical. | More broadly distributed across investment, jewelry, technology and official reserves, including central-bank purchases. |
| Market structure | Smaller, less liquid market; tight physical inventories can magnify moves. | Deeper, more liquid market with tighter spreads. |
| Volatility | Typically amplifies moves in both directions. | Lower volatility than silver, according to the World Gold Council. |
| Key marginal flows | Industrial expectations, retail bars and coins, exchange-traded products, yields and the dollar. | Safe-haven demand, central-bank buying, investment, jewelry, yields and the dollar. |
The World Gold Council describes the distinction this way: “Gold trades in a deeper, more liquid market, with tighter spreads and far lower volatility than silver” (World Gold Council comparison). Gold’s broader demand base can make it steadier during stress, while silver’s industrial and investment mix can produce larger rallies when several drivers align.

Why a deficit did not prevent the correction
Supply-demand deficits support a market over time, but they do not guarantee a rising price. The World Bank said silver jumped 55% quarter on quarter in the first quarter of 2026, reached January records, then fell sharply in March and eased further in April as speculation and profit-taking unwound (World Bank outlook).
Interest rates, Treasury yields, the US dollar and investor positioning can overwhelm a physical deficit in the short run. Higher yields raise the opportunity cost of holding non-income-producing metals. S&P Global reported an August 2026 COMEX silver average of $65.3 an ounce, 11.3% above July, while noting that yields and changing US monetary-policy expectations remained downside risks (S&P Global report).

How to interpret the gold-silver ratio
The ratio is the number of silver ounces required to buy one ounce of gold. A ratio of 66.43 in the September 23 snapshot meant one ounce of gold was priced at roughly 66.43 ounces of silver. A falling ratio means silver is outperforming gold over that interval; a rising ratio means gold is outperforming silver.
The ratio is a comparison tool, not a timing rule. Always specify the same date, currency and benchmark (spot, futures or a particular fix). A record price, a year-over-year gain and a year-to-date return measure different intervals.
What could keep supporting silver—and what could hurt it?
Potential supports
- Persistent physical-investment demand for coins, bars and exchange-traded products.
- Continued deficits or further reductions in readily available inventories.
- Growth in electrical, grid, automotive and data-center applications.
- Lower interest rates or a weaker dollar that improve the appeal of metals.
Risks to the rally
- Further photovoltaic thrifting or substitution, reducing silver intensity per unit.
- A manufacturing slowdown that cuts industrial consumption.
- Higher real yields, a stronger dollar or forced liquidation by leveraged traders.
- Profit-taking after a rapid price spike, even while the physical market remains tight.
The Silver Institute’s April 15, 2026 release summarized the 2025 estimates by saying, “Global silver demand exceeded supply for the fifth consecutive year” (Silver Institute release). That statement describes a market balance, not a promise about the next price move.
What this means for someone considering physical silver
A bullion coin or bar gives direct exposure to silver, but retail buyers usually pay a premium above the spot price and face the risk of substantial price swings. Compare the all-in purchase price, storage and insurance costs, resale spread and local tax treatment before buying. Physical metal is not the same as an exchange-traded product, futures contract or mining share; each has different liquidity, counterparty and fee risks.
