Others say they paid for coverage they never needed or would not buy it again. Those accounts show that people do purchase the add-ons, but they are anecdotes, not evidence of how common purchases are or whether buyers typically come out ahead.
What people who bought it say
In an April 2020 r/personalfinance discussion, commenters described buying audit protection for peace of mind, using a service during an audit, or paying for a plan they never needed. Some found the support worthwhile; others said they would not purchase it again. These individual experiences cannot establish the usual outcome or expected value.
What “audit protection” may include
The label does not identify one standard product. Provider descriptions reviewed include professional help assessing a matter, assistance with correspondence, and—in some circumstances—representation before tax authorities. The terms depend on the provider and the particular return. Check the offer applicable to your tax year rather than assuming that every plan covers the same notices, services, or period.
TaxSlayer Tax Protection Plus
TaxSlayer’s provider page displayed a price of $39.99 when reviewed on October 4, 2026, and advertised up to $1 million in services. The listed services may include a professional assessment, a response, and representation before the IRS or a state. TaxSlayer says prices may change and the protection must be added before filing. The $1 million is a provider-stated service limit, not a predicted payment to a customer. See TaxSlayer’s current offer and terms.

TaxAct Protection Plus
TaxAct’s support page describes its tax-year 2025 offer as providing assistance for three full years on federal and state audits. It may also handle correspondence and offer help with denied credits, tax debt, and tax-fraud incidents. The page says the protection is purchased separately for each return and identifies Enrolled Agents and CPAs among the professionals who may assist. The cited passage does not state a price, so the offers cannot be compared on price from these pages alone. Check TaxAct’s terms for the relevant return before relying on that description.
What protection does not do
Buying professional help does not make an audit or tax bill disappear, and it does not remove your responsibility to respond. The IRS says a CP75 or CP75A notice means it is auditing the return and requesting documents to verify claimed items. Its Topic 654 guidance tells recipients to respond by the notice’s date, keep a copy of the return, and send copies—not original documents. The notice identifies items under review and explains what documentation is needed. A service may help you understand or prepare a response, but you still need to provide requested records and meet the deadline.

How to decide whether to buy an add-on
Judge the plan by the assistance you would value and the exact terms for your return—not by a handful of favorable or unfavorable stories. Compare offers on these points:
- Price: the total add-on cost for that return.
- Term: the tax year covered and how long help is available.
- Scope: whether federal and state matters are included, and which notices, inquiries, or audits qualify.
- Service: whether the plan offers advice, prepares correspondence, contacts the authority, or provides representation.
- Who helps: the qualifications of the professional handling your matter.
- Conditions: applicable limits, exclusions, enrollment deadlines, and other terms.
The reviewed provider pages do not establish every provider’s current terms or offer a complete comparison of exclusions. Read the applicable terms before filing. If you already work with a tax professional, you can also ask what help they would provide if the return is questioned and whether that arrangement makes a separate add-on useful to you.
