Halliday announced a $20 million Series A on March 18, 2025, led by a16z crypto. The company says it will use the funding to develop its Workflow Protocol and Halliday Payments, and to expand its team. The pitch is not that Halliday has made AI inherently safe: it is building infrastructure intended to limit which blockchain actions an automated system can execute.
What Halliday raised and who invested
The $20 million Series A was led by a16z crypto, with participation from the Avalanche Blizzard Fund, Credibly Neutral, AltLayer, SV Angel and named angel investors, according to Halliday’s announcement. The company said the round brought its publicly reported funding to more than $26 million, following a $6 million seed round led by a16z crypto in 2022. The valuation and other round terms were not disclosed; Fortune’s funding coverage also reported no valuation.
Halliday said the money would support continued work on the Workflow Protocol, development of Halliday Payments and hiring, particularly technical staff. Its announcement also described plans to expand into fintech, banking and enterprise workflows.
Why blockchain workflows are difficult to automate
A single user goal—such as moving money from a bank account into a token on another network—can involve several separate systems: a fiat onramp, a wallet, a bridge, a decentralized exchange, gas payments and the destination chain. Each step brings its own transaction, liquidity, provider and failure assumptions. Quotes can change; transactions can remain pending; an intermediate step can fail after an earlier one has completed.

AI agents add a separate set of risks. They may misread ambiguous instructions, rely on bad or incomplete data, be manipulated by malicious input, or generate an unexpected sequence of tool calls. If an agent can construct arbitrary contract calls, a mistaken decision can become a consequential, potentially irreversible transaction. This is why the meaningful question is not simply whether an agent can transact, but what limits apply to its authority.
What the Workflow Protocol is meant to do
Halliday describes its Workflow Protocol as an orchestration layer for combining blockchain actions into reusable workflows. Rather than requiring an application team to build custom contract plumbing for every sequence, the team can define a workflow and its constraints; an application or autonomous system can then request permitted actions. Halliday’s description of the protocol and its guardrails is available in its overview of the Workflow Protocol and product page.
As an explanatory example—not a claim about Halliday’s default configuration—a workflow might allow a transfer only up to a set amount, to an approved destination, using specified tokens and chains, and before an expiration time. The agent could request an eligible step, but the workflow’s rules would determine whether it is allowed. Those sample limits illustrate the concept; they are not confirmed Halliday settings.

Halliday says its workflow constraints are enforced on-chain and cannot be bypassed by the company or an AI agent after deployment. That is a company claim about the design, not proof that the model cannot misunderstand a user, that the workflow is free of bugs, or that every integration and underlying protocol is secure. The available materials do not establish independent audits, formal threat models, recovery guarantees, insurance or service-level commitments.
Halliday Payments is the clearest product example
Halliday Payments is a non-custodial product intended to coordinate ways for users to acquire or move crypto, including fiat onramps, centralized-exchange transfers, bridges and token swaps. Halliday says it can coordinate providers, routing, gas payments, retries and status reporting. Its product page and payment-flow documentation describe that role. “Non-custodial” is Halliday’s stated architecture; it does not remove risks from wallets, user keys, smart contracts, bridges or third-party providers.
Developers can use a prebuilt widget or integrate through a direct API. The widget is suited to teams seeking an embedded or modal payment interface; the API is for teams that want to build their own user experience. Halliday’s documentation home describes both paths. Its API documentation covers asset discovery, quote generation, payment confirmation, status tracking, fund management and payment history. API access requires Halliday credentials, and the documentation directs developers to contact the company for keys.

The documented SDK example installs the package with npm install @halliday-sdk/payments and imports openHallidayPayments, with a public API key, chosen output asset and window type such as MODAL, POPUP or EMBED. This is an example from the available integration guide, not a guarantee that its interface will remain unchanged.
What happens when a payment step fails?
Halliday’s documentation identifies sudden price moves, inadequate DEX liquidity, changing on-chain state and provider or bridge problems as possible failure conditions. It describes status polling and retries; payment status can include PENDING and COMPLETE, with final transaction hashes exposed when completed. See the payment-flow guide, status documentation and API examples.

Before relying on a multi-step flow, an integrator should establish how partial completion is reconciled, who pays gas for retries, what happens when a quote expires, whether users can pause or revoke a workflow, and how losses from an integration fault are allocated. It should also check provider-specific KYC requirements, supported jurisdictions and the liquidity available for the actual token-and-chain route. What was live at the time of the announcement
Halliday said its workflow engine had been used in production since 2023 and named DeFi Kingdoms, Core Wallet by Ava Labs and ApeChain. The company also reported that Halliday Payments was being used by more than 35 clients at the time of its March 2025 announcement, and said integrations involving Story Protocol, Lens and Frax were planned or going live. These are company-reported claims: a production deployment, a client, a partner and a planned integration are not interchangeable measures of adoption.
Does Halliday mean developers can stop writing smart contracts?
Halliday’s announcement used the slogan “never write a smart contract again.” A more precise description is that Halliday aims to reduce the need for application teams to write and maintain custom smart-contract plumbing for common multi-step workflows. It does not mean smart contracts disappear: the underlying protocols and blockchain actions generally still depend on contracts.
The abstraction may speed up integration, but it also makes teams dependent on Halliday’s routing, integrations, workflow rules and availability. Specialized applications may still need custom contracts, and developers remain responsible for their business logic, authorization, key management and compliance obligations. Halliday has also claimed a 10,000-fold reduction in development costs, but the announcement does not provide independent evidence establishing that figure as a general result.

What a prospective customer should verify
Halliday may be relevant to a product that needs embedded crypto onboarding, cross-chain payments or repeatable multi-step execution. It is a less direct fit for a team seeking basic blockchain node access, a fully self-hosted stack, publicly posted pricing, or complete control over custom contract code. A third-party orchestration layer can replace many separate integrations while also concentrating operational dependence on one provider.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the supported chains, tokens, routes, providers and jurisdictions for the intended users; broad product language does not establish universal availability.
- Ask for transaction and routing fees, quote-expiration behavior, retry costs and the treatment of partial failures. The reviewed public materials do not show a pricing table.
- Request applicable security audits, incident and recovery procedures, service commitments and contractual responsibility for integration failures. The public materials cited here do not establish those assurances.
- Define whether an AI only proposes transactions, requests workflows subject to user approval, or can execute within preset limits. Halliday’s public materials support constrained automation, not a recommendation to grant agents unrestricted authority over funds.
