A threat actor reportedly advertised about 61 GB of data allegedly tied to 6.3 million Russell Cellular customer and employee records on March 17, 2026, asking $1,200. The claim has not been independently verified. Russell Cellular is an independent Verizon Authorized Retailer, so the allegation does not establish that Verizon Communications’ corporate network or central customer database was breached.

The short version

  • The alleged victim is Russell Cellular, not necessarily Verizon Communications.
  • The claimed dataset was approximately 61 GB and 6.3 million records, according to an April 9 law-firm announcement describing the hacker listing.
  • The figure may represent records rather than unique people and has not been authenticated.
  • People who used Russell Cellular should secure wireless accounts, change reused passwords, and watch for phishing and unauthorized account changes.

What hackers claimed

According to an April 9, 2026 announcement from Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP, a threat actor allegedly posted or advertised Russell Cellular data on a hacker forum on March 17. The seller reportedly claimed approximately 61 GB covering 6.3 million customer and employee records and sought $1,200. SC Media later described the alleged theft, citing Cybernews, on March 18.

A sale listing proves that a claim was made; it does not prove that the seller possessed authentic Russell Cellular data, that the material was unique or current, or that a transaction occurred.

What information may be involved?

The categories below were reported as allegedly present. They are not confirmed exposures:

The available reporting does not establish exposure of Social Security numbers, payment-card or banking data, passwords, authentication tokens, call records, location data, or full Verizon account credentials. Russell Cellular’s privacy policy says payment transactions are processed through Verizon gateways and are not stored or processed on Russell Cellular’s servers; that description does not rule out compromise of another system, vendor, or legacy environment.

Why this is not automatically a Verizon breach

Russell Cellular says it operates independently as a Verizon Authorized Retailer, selling Verizon phones and plans and providing retail support. Verizon corporate stores and Verizon’s corporate systems are separate from an independent retailer’s business systems. Russell Cellular describes a large multistate store network on its business page and support page, but the pages give different location counts.

An alleged compromise of Russell Cellular therefore does not, by itself, show that Verizon’s corporate network, primary customer database, or every Verizon customer was accessed. Customers who never interacted with Russell Cellular are not established as affected.

Has the breach been confirmed?

No publicly accessible Russell Cellular incident statement, Verizon confirmation, regulatory breach filing, forensic report, independently validated sample, or law-enforcement confirmation was identified in the available material. The strongest characterization is a reported hacker allegation, with details repeated in a law-firm investigation announcement—not a confirmed breach notification.

What remains unconfirmed

  • Whether the hackers obtained any Russell Cellular data at all
  • Whether all 6.3 million claimed records are authentic, unique, and associated with Russell Cellular
  • Whether the number refers to people, accounts, historical entries, test data, or duplicates
  • Whether Russell Cellular systems, a vendor, or a shared retail platform was involved
  • Whether Verizon corporate systems or databases were accessed
  • Which individuals, if any, must be notified
  • Whether the data has been used in confirmed fraud

Who should take precautions?

Pay particular attention if you bought or activated service through Russell Cellular, used its upgrade, trade-in, shipping, or support services, provided it with contact or account information, were a Russell Cellular business customer, or are a current or former employee. The evidence does not justify assuming that every Verizon customer is involved.

What potentially affected people should do

Secure accounts and passwords

  1. Change any password used for a Russell Cellular portal or account, if one exists.
  2. Change that password anywhere else it was reused, beginning with email and wireless accounts.
  3. Use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication wherever offered.
  4. Review Verizon account activity, billing, device upgrades, contact-information changes, and number-transfer requests.

Reduce SIM-swap and port-out risk

Contact Verizon through its official website or the number on a legitimate bill—not a link or number in an unexpected message. Ask about changing the account PIN or passcode, port-out or number-transfer protections, unauthorized SIM or eSIM changes, and recent access activity. The alleged data does not establish that a SIM swap occurred or that it contained everything needed to perform one.

Recognize targeted phishing

Names, phone numbers, device details, invoice numbers, and plan information can make impersonation more convincing. Do not disclose one-time codes, approve unexpected account changes, click unknown “breach” links, call numbers in suspicious texts, or give an unsolicited caller your account PIN. Verify requests through an official channel even when the caller knows personal or billing details.

Consider credit protections when warranted

If a later notice confirms exposure of Social Security numbers or other identity fields, consider a fraud alert or credit freeze and monitor credit reports and account statements. A freeze can help with some new-account fraud, but it does not stop phishing, SIM swaps, takeovers of existing wireless accounts, or unauthorized device financing.

Questions the companies should answer

Russell Cellular

  • Was unauthorized access detected, and when?
  • Which systems, databases, vendors, and dates were involved?
  • Has the alleged 61 GB dataset been authenticated?
  • How many unique customers and employees are affected?
  • Were passwords, tokens, payment information, Social Security numbers, or government identifiers present?
  • Have regulators or affected people been notified?
  • Are credentials being reset, systems being contained, or credit and identity assistance being offered?

Verizon

  • Was Verizon’s corporate network or customer database accessed?
  • Do Verizon and Russell Cellular share systems or data for retail operations?
  • What should customers who used Russell Cellular do?
  • Has Verizon found related fraudulent port-outs, upgrades, SIM changes, or account takeovers?

Timeline and current status

Date Reported development
March 17, 2026 A threat actor allegedly advertised Russell Cellular data for sale, according to the law-firm announcement.
March 18, 2026 SC Media reported the allegation, citing Cybernews.
April 9, 2026 Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP announced an investigation into the alleged 6.3 million-record incident.
August 18, 2026 No independent confirmation was identified in the available sources.

Until Russell Cellular, Verizon, regulators, or independent technical evidence confirms otherwise, this remains an unverified data-theft claim involving an independent Verizon retailer—not proof that Verizon’s corporate customer database was breached.
