Google launched its consumer “Try it on” apparel feature in the United States on July 24, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, eligible logged-in U.S. shoppers can find it in Google Search, Google Shopping, and Google Images, upload a personal image (or use a newer selfie-based option), and view an AI-generated preview of themselves wearing selected tops, bottoms, and dresses.
It is a styling preview—not a body scanner or a promise that a particular size will fit. Use the image to compare colors and silhouettes, then use the retailer’s measurements, reviews, shipping terms, and return policy before spending money.
What Google actually launched
The U.S. launch moved Google’s virtual apparel try-on from a model-based demonstration to a consumer shopping tool that can use the shopper’s own image. Google had introduced its underlying garment-rendering technology in June 2023, showing how generative models could represent drape, folds, stretch, wrinkles, and shadows on different bodies (Google’s 2023 announcement).
On May 20, 2025, Google announced that shoppers could use their own photos. The consumer U.S. rollout followed on July 24, 2025 (Google’s launch announcement). On December 11, 2025, Google added a U.S. flow in which a selfie can be used with its Nano Banana image model to generate a digital version for try-ons (Google’s selfie update).

Those milestones describe related stages, not one guarantee of exact digital fitting. Google’s current documentation calls the result an approximation.
How to use Google Try it on
- Sign in to a Google Account.
- Open Google Search, Google Shopping, or Google Images on a phone or computer.
- Search for an eligible top, bottom, or dress and open a product listing or image.
- Choose “Try it on.”
- Upload your own image, select a saved image, or use the available selfie-based flow.
- Review the generated visualization, then save or share it if you wish.
- Follow the merchant link to check the actual size, price, availability, delivery terms, and return rules before ordering.
The button is not shown on every listing. Google says Shopping Ads—items marked “Sponsored”—do not receive the Try it on button.
Which products and shoppers qualify?

Google has announced separate shoe try-on experiences in selected markets. Do not assume that a shoe listing supports the apparel Try it on button simply because another Google Shopping experience does (Google’s shoe announcement).

How to take a useful photo
Google recommends a full-body image from head to toe, although the selfie flow can create a digital version when you do not have one. For the best chance of a usable result:

- Stand upright with your hands visible and keep the background relatively uncluttered.
- Wear reasonably fitted clothing rather than very loose or baggy garments.
- Avoid close-up, seated, crouched, distant, poorly framed, or dark photos.
- Upload only your own image or one for which you have explicit permission.
- Do not upload photos of children.
What the generated image can—and cannot—tell you
The system combines your image with the garment’s product imagery and information, then synthesizes a new picture. Google’s earlier technical work aimed to represent how fabric may drape and fold rather than simply placing a flat clothing cutout over a person. Product information is drawn from Google’s Shopping systems, which Google describes as containing tens of billions of listings.

That process can help answer visual questions: Does this color work with my wardrobe? Is the silhouette cropped, straight, or oversized-looking? How might the pattern appear on me rather than on the retailer’s model?
It does not establish your measurements or the garment’s real-world fit. Google warns that generated images may get body shape, personal features, clothing details, apparent size, or proportions wrong. They do not prove the fabric’s stretch, weight, opacity, comfort, construction, or movement, and they do not show whether your preferred size is in stock.

Before buying, compare the retailer’s garment measurements with an item you already own, read reviews for comments about stretch and sizing consistency, and check shipping, return, and any restocking-fee policies. A flattering rendering can make a garment appear more accurately fitted than it will be in person.
Photo storage, privacy, and deletion
Google says uploaded photos are saved for convenience so you do not have to upload them repeatedly. It also says the service does not collect or store biometric data during the experience, does not use uploaded photos to train its models, and does not share them with other Google products, services, or third-party affiliates. Google says feedback and trained human reviewers may be used to evaluate image quality, with measures intended to disconnect review data from user accounts. These are Google’s stated policies, not an independent audit.

You can manage the images yourself:
- Open the camera control in the Try it on experience.
- Select “Delete original photo.”
- Remove generated results from the “Recently tried” tray.
- Delete saved images from Google Account saved items where applicable.
Because an uploaded image is retained for convenience until you remove it, avoid submitting another person’s photo without consent and consider deleting the original after you finish comparing products.
Why the Try it on button may be missing
- The item is not a top, bottom, or dress eligible for the current experience.
- The result is a Shopping Ad or another sponsored listing.
- You are signed out, under 18, outside a supported market, or have required personalization settings disabled.
- The specific product, merchant listing, image, or account is not included in the rollout.
- The retailer’s product data or imagery does not meet Google’s eligibility conditions.
- The interface is experiencing a temporary error or inconsistent rollout.
Try another non-sponsored garment and confirm your account and settings. Google also says retailers can opt out through Merchant Center support; an opt-out removes the button from that merchant’s listings, but another merchant selling the same product may still offer it (Merchant Center guidance).
What this means for a purchase decision
For shoppers, the practical value is faster visual comparison without opening a brand-specific dressing-room tool. It may reduce uncertainty about styling and silhouette, but it cannot remove the financial risk of ordering the wrong size. Treat it as an image-generation aid, not evidence that you can skip measurements or returns research.
Retailers also need to remember that image quality affects the result. Google automatically enrolls eligible brands unless they opt out, and the generated preview still depends on the product imagery and information available to Google.
Bottom line
Google’s U.S. Try it on feature is available now for eligible logged-in adults and supports tops, bottoms, and dresses across Google Search, Shopping, and Images. It is useful for a quick styling check, including the newer selfie-to-digital-version flow, but the generated picture is only an approximation. Check measurements, reviews, stock, and return costs before treating any preview as a reason to buy.
