Its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), UCP-powered checkout and Universal Cart are designed to let people discover products, compare offers, build carts and complete eligible purchases inside Google surfaces such as Search and Gemini. That could weaken Amazon’s role as the default place to begin shopping. It does not, however, mean Google has become a retailer or that Amazon’s logistics, Prime membership and marketplace have been displaced.
What Google actually launched
“Agentic commerce” is a stack of related products rather than one autonomous-shopping app.
Universal Commerce Protocol
Google announced UCP in January 2026 as an open protocol for connecting AI agents with merchant backends. Its intended workflow spans product discovery, product details and availability, cart construction, checkout, payment, order status and post-purchase support. Google’s documentation describes programmatic interfaces including APIs, Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A): Google Merchant Center documentation.
A common interface could reduce the need for every retailer to build a separate integration for every AI platform. “Open,” though, describes the technical rail; it does not make Google’s ranking, eligibility rules, advertising or consumer interfaces neutral.

Universal Cart
Google introduced Universal Cart at Google I/O 2026. It is intended to let shoppers collect products across Search and Gemini, with YouTube and Gmail integration planned. A conventional retailer cart belongs to one merchant. Universal Cart is a cross-surface interface that may display items from different merchants; that does not automatically mean one combined shipment, one merchant of record or one returns process. Google’s announcement says the initial rollout is in the United States during summer 2026: Google’s Universal Cart announcement.
Checkout and payments
Eligible product listings can support checkout in Google Search’s AI Mode and the Gemini app. Google is pairing UCP with the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Google Pay-related infrastructure. AP2 addresses a specific problem: an AI recommendation, a user instruction, a merchant’s acceptance and an authorized payment are different events. A convenient “one-click” flow must not become a transaction based on a misunderstood instruction. AP2 is a payments component of the wider architecture, not proof that Google operates every merchant’s full commerce system. What consumers can use now
Availability depends on merchant integration, product eligibility, account and payment setup, and geography. Google’s materials do not establish universal checkout for every product or retailer.

Google’s commercial update lists the retailer examples above: Google advertising and commerce update. Coverage has described Walmart’s participation differently, so claims about any named retailer should be tied to that retailer’s actual implementation rather than treated as a single launch state. “Agentic” does not necessarily mean autonomous buying
These terms describe increasing levels of delegation:
- AI-assisted shopping: product summaries and answers.
- Conversational shopping: questions, comparisons and recommendations in dialogue.
- Agentic shopping: multi-step searching, price monitoring, cart assembly or reordering.
- Agentic checkout: preparing or executing a transaction under delegated authorization.
- Autonomous commerce: acting within preset limits with little real-time intervention.
Google’s current announcements and Amazon’s comparable features span the middle categories. They do not show that most consumers are granting unconstrained purchasing authority to software.

Amazon reported 2025 net sales of $716.9 billion, including $269.287 billion in online-stores revenue and $172.162 billion in third-party seller services: Amazon’s 2025 results and its 2025 Form 10-K. Amazon’s filing says its stores support hundreds of millions of unique products sold by Amazon and third-party sellers. Those figures show the infrastructure Google is challenging indirectly, not a business Google has replicated.
The real battleground is ownership of shopping intent
The first interface a shopper uses can influence the shortlist, comparison criteria, ranking, advertising opportunity and merchant selected. Google could become that interface by allowing people to compare multiple retailers without first visiting Amazon, while keeping the journey in Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail.

That creates a potential disintermediation threat. A consumer might buy an item fulfilled by a brand, marketplace seller or another retailer while Amazon loses the initial research and recommendation moment. Google could also give smaller merchants access to agent-mediated demand without requiring each one to build a consumer AI assistant.
Amazon’s counterposition is substantial. Amazon renamed Rufus Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. Amazon describes it as handling discovery, comparisons, price information, recommendations, reordering and shopping-related actions, with direct access to Amazon inventory, purchase history, Prime eligibility and fulfillment options: Amazon’s AI shopping overview.
Amazon also says it offers hundreds of millions of products and more than 300 million items with fast, free delivery for Prime members. Those are Amazon claims, not independent market-share measurements. Delivery speed, reviews, returns, seller tooling and Prime habit remain difficult for a discovery-layer competitor to copy.
Is UCP open, or another Google-controlled funnel?
Both descriptions can be true. More merchants and platforms may connect through an open technical protocol, while Google controls the consumer distribution points where products are ranked, presented and recommended. Google may influence eligibility, sponsored placement, commercial terms and the data retailers receive about intent.

For merchants, the central question is whether UCP produces genuinely new customers and usable first-party relationships, or merely platform-mediated orders whose context remains with Google. Protocol adoption alone does not settle that question.

Operational risks before trusting an AI checkout
For shoppers
- Check the actual merchant, seller, shipping provider, delivery date and return policy.
- Set explicit limits for price, delivery deadline, brand, substitutions, country of origin and sustainability preferences.
- Require a final review of variants, taxes, shipping and subscriptions immediately before payment.
- Confirm who handles refunds, damaged shipments, disputes and returns.
- Ask whether the recommendation optimizes for price, delivery, sponsored placement or another undisclosed objective.
Failure modes include hallucinated attributes, stale prices or inventory, wrong sizes and compatibility, hidden shipping costs, duplicate orders, unintended third-party sellers and unclear authorization. A purchase begun in an AI interface can still require dealing with the merchant that fulfilled it.
For retailers and brands
- Maintain accurate structured catalog data, prices and inventory with low update latency.
- Make shipping, delivery estimates, returns and subscription terms machine-readable.
- Clarify merchant-of-record, fraud, payment and customer-service responsibilities.
- Measure AI referrals and contribution margins rather than assuming every new order is profitable.
- Assess customer-data access, brand presentation and dependence on Google ranking or eligibility.
UCP may provide high-intent demand without requiring a retailer to build its own assistant. The trade-off is dependence on Google’s policies, analytics and commercial terms.
For Amazon sellers
Sellers must weigh Amazon’s internal assistant and fulfillment advantages against visibility on Google, direct-to-consumer channels and other commerce platforms. Supporting every channel can create inconsistent catalogs and operational cost; relying only on Amazon can make the business less visible when shoppers begin with a general-purpose agent.
What investors should watch
- Whether major merchants implement UCP beyond announced pilots.
- Checkout conversion, repeat use and consumer trust, not just demonstrations.
- Catalog accuracy, payment authorization and fraud performance.
- Retailer economics and willingness to share customer and intent data.
- Whether Google captures meaningful transaction value or mainly sends demand elsewhere.
- Amazon’s response through Alexa for Shopping, Prime, fulfillment and marketplace incentives.
- Regulatory scrutiny of ranking, self-preferencing, data use and sponsored recommendations.
Amazon itself lists search engines, comparison-shopping sites, virtual assistants, AI-enabled acquisition channels, payment processors and fulfillment providers among its competitors in its annual report. Its competitive set is therefore broader than one Google product.

What this means for personal-finance decisions
Consumers should treat AI checkout as a convenience feature, not a guarantee of the lowest total cost. Compare the delivered price, return friction, seller reputation and payment protections across the actual merchant options. Investors should distinguish a strategic announcement from evidence of changed market share, margins or cash flow.
Retailers and brands should improve product data and test qualified integrations while preserving direct customer relationships where possible. Verdict: a threat to Amazon’s starting point, not yet its delivery machine
Google is making a substantial infrastructure and distribution move. UCP, Universal Cart, AP2 and Google’s AI surfaces could make Google the place where shoppers formulate intent, compare retailers and initiate transactions. That is a credible challenge to Amazon’s discovery and customer-relationship moat.

It is not evidence that Google has become a major retailer, that UCP is already an industry-wide standard or that Amazon’s market share and profitability have deteriorated because of it. Amazon still controls a dense marketplace, Prime loyalty, fulfillment, reviews, returns and a deeply established purchasing habit. Google’s likely first win is owning more of the shopping question; Amazon remains harder to displace as the place that completes and delivers the purchase.
