Google automatically deleted those links on June 16, 2025. PayPal-branded debit and credit cards can still be added where the card, issuer, device and region are eligible, so Google did not remove every PayPal payment option.
What changed
The discontinued feature was an account-level connection between PayPal and Google Wallet or Google Pay. It was not the same as adding a PayPal-branded card as a normal card credential.
- Linked PayPal accounts: No longer supported for U.S. payments after June 16, 2025. Google says those links were automatically deleted.
- PayPal virtual cards for online Google Pay checkout: Google says they stopped being available in July 2024 and were automatically deleted and unsupported from June 16, 2025.
- PayPal-branded cards: Eligible PayPal cards remain addable to Google Wallet, subject to product, issuer, device and regional restrictions.
Google’s current explanation is available in its Wallet Help page and its Google Pay payment-method guidance.
When the U.S. changes took effect
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| July 2024 | Linked PayPal-branded virtual cards stopped appearing for online checkout with the Google Pay button in the U.S. |
| June 4, 2024 | Google discontinued the standalone U.S. Google Pay app. Google Wallet remained the primary Android app for stored cards and tap-to-pay; this was separate from the PayPal policy. |
| June 16, 2025 | Google deleted linked U.S. PayPal accounts and linked PayPal virtual cards and stopped supporting them. |
| August 18, 2026 | Google’s U.S. documentation still describes direct PayPal-account linking as discontinued, while eligible PayPal cards remain supported. |
What still works in the United States
PayPal-branded cards
PayPal says eligible products may include the PayPal Debit Mastercard, PayPal Cashback Mastercard, PayPal Extras Mastercard, PayPal Credit Card and certain PayPal Business Debit Mastercard products. A card is provisioned as a card in Google Wallet; it does not recreate the old PayPal-account connection. Google notes that the issuing bank or card provider decides whether a particular card can be used with Wallet. See the supported-payment-method guidance and PayPal’s card eligibility page.

PayPal Debit Mastercard and PayPal Balance
The PayPal Debit Mastercard is the closest practical replacement for someone who wants to spend a PayPal Balance account at a contactless terminal. PayPal describes the card as linked to PayPal Balance and says it can be added to Google Pay. That is a card transaction funded by the balance, not direct PayPal-account integration. PayPal’s current page says there is no fee for opening or using the card for U.S. purchases, while ATM fees and eligibility conditions may apply. It also advertises up to 5% back in PayPal Rewards Points on up to $1,000 of monthly spending in a selected category, subject to current terms. Check the PayPal Debit Mastercard terms before relying on those features.
PayPal at online merchant checkout
You can still choose PayPal directly when an online merchant offers PayPal as a checkout option. That account-level checkout is separate from Google Wallet card provisioning and does not provide NFC tap-to-pay at a physical store. PayPal describes supported Google-related checkout uses on its Google Pay help page.

Google Play subscriptions
Google says subscriptions purchased through Google services such as Google Play should generally be unaffected. This exception does not guarantee that a subscription billed by an unrelated merchant will continue without updating its payment method.
What affected users should do
If you only used a linked PayPal account
- Open Google Wallet and choose Add to Wallet or the equivalent payment-method option.
- Select a debit card, credit card or eligible PayPal-branded card.
- Scan or enter the card details and complete verification with the issuer or PayPal.
- Choose the new card as the default if you want it used for tap-to-pay.
Labels differ by Android version, Wallet release, device manufacturer and account state. Google also advises keeping at least one card on your Google account for Google Pay checkout.
If you want to spend PayPal Balance
Apply for or use an eligible PayPal Debit Mastercard, then add it to Wallet. PayPal’s documented in-app route is generally:
- Open the PayPal app.
- Tap Accounts and select the PayPal card or balance tile.
- Tap Manage or open the card details.
- Choose Add to Google Pay or Add to Google Wallet.
- Complete the requested verification.
Menu names can vary between PayPal app versions. You can also try Wallet’s Add to Wallet path, but manual addition is not guaranteed for every PayPal product.

If a PayPal card will not add
- Confirm that the product is an eligible PayPal-branded card, not a discontinued or unsupported prepaid product.
- Check that your PayPal account, card and billing region are U.S.-eligible and in good standing.
- Update Google Wallet, Google Play services and the PayPal app.
- Make sure the phone has NFC if your goal is contactless payment; Google requires NFC for tap-to-pay.
- Ask whether the issuer permits mobile-wallet provisioning for that specific card.
- Try starting the addition from the PayPal app rather than Wallet.
- Remove an incomplete or duplicate Wallet entry and retry.
- If verification repeatedly fails, contact PayPal or the card issuer.
Google’s device and issuer requirements are summarized at Google Wallet Help. Avoid factory-resetting the phone or deleting every wallet card as a first step; those actions can create additional verification work.

Subscriptions and recurring charges
Review each non-Google merchant that previously charged the linked PayPal account. Google warns that those recurring payments may fail unless you replace the old method on the merchant’s account page. Google Play and other Google-service subscriptions are the narrower exception described above.

Transaction history
Google says history from the deleted linked PayPal account is no longer available in Google Wallet. Use PayPal to view those historical transactions. This limitation concerns the deleted account link and should not be assumed for every transaction made with a PayPal-branded card.
Refunds
For an in-store purchase made through the former linked PayPal arrangement, request the refund from the merchant. Google says that after the merchant processes it, the funds should return to the PayPal account. Pending tap-to-pay authorizations made immediately before deletion were generally expected to authorize almost instantly.
Choosing a replacement
| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal Debit Mastercard in Wallet | Spending PayPal Balance at contactless terminals | Requires a separate card and available PayPal Balance; it is not account linking. |
| Bank debit or credit card in Wallet | The simplest general replacement | Does not draw directly from PayPal Balance; issuer rewards, fees and disputes apply. |
| PayPal directly at checkout | Online merchants that offer PayPal | Does not replace in-store NFC payments and depends on merchant availability. |
Regional and documentation caveats
This cutoff is a U.S. policy. Google’s Wallet documentation says direct PayPal linking remains supported in Germany, so the U.S. result should not be generalized worldwide.
PayPal’s U.S. help content still contains broad “add or link your account” wording. That language may be stale, region-dependent or describing a different Google Pay flow. Google’s current U.S. Wallet documentation is the controlling source for the discontinued U.S. account integration; do not assume direct linking has returned without a new Google announcement.
Finally, do not confuse this change with Google’s June 4, 2024 shutdown of the standalone U.S. Google Pay app. Wallet continues to handle stored cards and Android tap-to-pay.
