Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman also left Google, as Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit functions moved toward a more centralized structure. Google said it was continuing AR software and partnership work rather than abandoning augmented reality altogether.
What Google changed
DSPA covered Google’s Pixel phones and related devices, Nest smart-home products, Fitbit wearables and services, other consumer-device engineering, and Google’s first-party AR hardware effort. Before the change, teams associated with different products or acquisitions generally retained more distinct design, engineering, and software structures.
The new model organized more capabilities by function across product lines. Shared hardware-engineering organizations and common leadership were intended to reduce duplicated work and connect Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit development more closely. Google’s announcement was therefore both a staffing reduction and an organizational redesign. 9to5Google reported the restructuring details.
How many jobs were affected?
Google confirmed that a few hundred DSPA roles were being eliminated. It also said the majority of the hardware reductions affected the first-party AR hardware team.

Separate reports described cuts in Google Assistant, core engineering, and knowledge-and-information teams during the same January news cycle. Media accounts sometimes combined those reductions into an estimate of roughly 1,000 jobs, but Google did not publish one consolidated total. That estimate should not be treated as an official company figure. Reuters’ report carried by Yahoo Finance and 9to5Google’s follow-up covered the separate groups.
| Area | What was established |
|---|---|
| Devices & Services Product Area | A few hundred roles eliminated |
| First-party AR hardware | Majority of the DSPA hardware cuts |
| Assistant and other teams | Additional reductions reported separately |
| Combined official total | Not specified by Google |
What happened to Google’s AR plans?
The confirmed change was a substantial reduction in Google’s first-party AR hardware team. That points to less willingness to build a complete AR hardware platform internally, but it does not establish that Google ended all AR work.
Google said it remained committed to other AR initiatives, including software experiences in its products and partnerships with outside hardware manufacturers. In practical terms, the strategy shifted toward Android-based AR/XR capabilities, software that can run on existing products, and partners that build the physical devices. Road to VR examined the AR hardware reductions.

That distinction matters: “Google abandoned AR” is too broad, while “Google cut back its first-party AR hardware effort” accurately describes the announcement.

Why Fitbit’s co-founders left
James Park and Eric Friedman, along with other Fitbit leaders, departed Google during or alongside the restructuring. Available reporting establishes their departure, not that they were personally fired. TechCrunch reported the leadership exits.
Google completed its Fitbit acquisition in January 2021 for $2.1 billion. Park remained involved as a Fitbit vice president and general manager and appeared in Google wearable announcements, including Pixel Watch launches. Losing both original co-founders only a few years after the acquisition was therefore a meaningful change in leadership and ownership of Fitbit’s product direction. Axios covered the Fitbit and Assistant context; RTE/Reuters provided acquisition and departure background.

What the reorganization meant for Fitbit
Fitbit remained part of Google’s hardware portfolio; Google did not announce that Fitbit devices or services were being discontinued. At the same time, Fitbit health and fitness capabilities were increasingly being integrated into Google’s broader wearable strategy while Pixel Watch products occupied overlapping territory.
- Confirmed: Fitbit’s founders and other leaders left, and hardware functions were consolidated.
- Reasonable interpretation: Fitbit was likely to operate with less organizational independence as Google connected it more tightly to Pixel and shared engineering teams.
- Not established: an immediate Fitbit shutdown, the end of Fitbit devices, or the departure of every senior Fitbit employee.
For users, the announcement signaled organizational integration, not a product cancellation. Current availability, support, and subscription terms require checking Google’s live product pages because they may have changed since 2024.
How Google Assistant fit into the story
The hardware announcement arrived during a wider priority shift toward generative AI. Google also eliminated hundreds of roles connected to Assistant and other knowledge-and-information teams while incorporating generative-AI capabilities into Assistant.

Those were parallel cuts in different organizations, not evidence that Fitbit’s leadership departures directly caused the Assistant reductions. The broader context was Google’s effort to redirect resources while it pursued AI priorities. Reuters and 9to5Google reported on those teams.
How this fit Google’s broader layoffs
The January 2024 changes followed Google’s January 2023 announcement that it would eliminate approximately 12,000 jobs. Further reductions occurred across different teams during 2023 and early 2024. The DSPA action was one round in that broader restructuring, not Google’s first or only layoff event.

Pixel and Nest development did not stop
The cuts were concentrated most heavily in first-party AR hardware even though the wider DSPA structure changed. Nothing in the announcement said that all Pixel or Nest development was canceled.

Fitbit was not officially shut down
The founders’ departures and increased integration raised legitimate questions about brand autonomy and future road maps, but they were not a discontinuation announcement.
Google was not abandoning hardware altogether
Google was consolidating hardware capabilities across Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit while retaining those product lines. The more specific strategic retreat was from building as much AR hardware in-house.
Strategic implications
The reorganization creates a trade-off for Google. Shared engineering can reduce duplicated work, encourage component reuse, and make integration across phones, watches, smart-home products, and health services easier. A partner-based AR approach can also reduce the cost and risk of designing an entire hardware platform alone.
The costs are equally concrete. Fitbit’s independent identity may weaken, leadership departures can unsettle product planning, and relying on outside AR manufacturers reduces Google’s control over the complete user experience. Repeated restructurings can also make employees, developers, and investors less certain about long-term platform commitments. These are strategic implications of the structure, not additional claims Google made about its motives.
Reader-service note: choosing a wearable after the reorganization
The 2024 event alone is not a reason to assume a Fitbit purchase is unsafe. Compare the current product, support, compatibility, and subscription terms on official pages before buying.
| Option | Best fit | Potential drawback | Official information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch | Android users wanting Google services and Fitbit health features in a smartwatch | May be a poor fit for longest battery life, extensive training metrics, or independence from Google’s ecosystem | Google Store Pixel Watch |
| Fitbit trackers and watches | Basic activity, sleep, health, and fitness tracking | Less suitable for advanced GPS training or extensive smartwatch apps; some features may involve membership terms | Fitbit products and Fitbit Premium |
| Apple Watch | People already using an iPhone | Not a practical substitute for most Android users | Apple Watch |
| Garmin wearables | Training, outdoor activities, and broad sports support | Less Google, Fitbit, or Pixel integration | Garmin wearables |
| Oura Ring | Sleep, recovery, and readiness in a ring form factor | No conventional smartwatch screen or built-in apps; check current membership terms | Oura Ring |
For Google’s broader current lineup, use the Google Store. Prices, availability, software support, and subscription terms should be taken from the live pages rather than 2024 launch information.
