That is a phone-volume milestone—not evidence that Pixel 9 produced Google’s highest quarterly revenue. Alphabet reported record-setting company revenue for the quarter, but it does not disclose Pixel revenue separately.
What record did Google break?
Counterpoint Research reported that Google achieved its highest-ever quarterly smartphone volume in Q3 2024, which ran from July through September. The finding is based on Counterpoint’s market data, not an audited unit-sales figure published by Google. It describes smartphone volume or sell-through, not Alphabet’s revenue and not necessarily devices shipped into retail channels. Counterpoint’s Q3 2024 market analysis also says the global smartphone market grew 2% year over year; Google remained outside the global top five brands.
So the accurate reading of “record sales” is a record quarter for Google-branded smartphone volume. It is not proof that Pixel 9 alone caused the record, or that Google earned more from phones than in any previous quarter.
Why Pixel 9 was part of the story
Google unveiled the Pixel 9 family in August 2024, within the record quarter. The range included Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Contemporaneous launch coverage reported availability in 32 countries, including eight markets new to the flagship line; that is the launch footprint reported in 2024, not a statement of current availability. The launch report also listed U.S. starting prices at the time of $799, $999, $1,099 and $1,799, respectively. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices.
#1 Best Overall
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on the Q3 earnings call that demand for Pixel 9 devices was strong. That is relevant company commentary, but it provides no unit count and does not independently establish how much the phones contributed to the market-volume record. Broader availability plausibly expanded the potential customer base, but the available figures do not quantify its effect.
What Alphabet’s financial results show
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported $88.268 billion in total revenue for Q3 2024, up from $76.693 billion in Q3 2023. Google Services generated $76.510 billion. These figures describe the company’s financial performance; they should not be read as Pixel sales.

| Alphabet metric | Q3 2024 | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $88.268 billion | Alphabet-wide revenue |
| Google Services | $76.510 billion | Google’s services segment |
| Search and other advertising | $49.385 billion | Search-related advertising revenue |
| YouTube advertising | $8.921 billion | YouTube advertising revenue |
| Subscriptions, Platforms and Devices | $10.656 billion | A combined category, not a Pixel-only figure |
| Google Cloud | $11.353 billion | Cloud segment revenue |
| Net income | $26.301 billion | Alphabet’s net income |
| Earnings per share | $2.12 | Alphabet’s reported earnings per share |
Alphabet’s Q3 2024 earnings release shows Subscriptions, Platforms and Devices revenue increased from $8.339 billion a year earlier to $10.656 billion. But that category combines subscriptions, platform revenue such as Google Play, and hardware. On the earnings call, Alphabet attributed growth to both subscription growth and the Made by Google device launch. It did not break out Pixel revenue, unit sales, average selling price or profit, so the Pixel share of the category’s increase cannot be calculated from the published figures.
Why the launch calendar complicates the comparison
Google moved its Made by Google launch from Q4 into Q3 in 2024. Alphabet had discussed the timing shift on its Q2 earnings call, then warned on the Q3 call that the shift would create a year-over-year headwind in Q4. The change placed launch-related activity in Q3 2024 that had fallen in Q4 the prior year. That can make the Q3 comparison look stronger without proving that demand permanently accelerated by the same amount.

The wider smartphone market was recovering
Google’s record came during an improving market, not in isolation. Counterpoint said Q3 2024 was the fourth consecutive quarter of global smartphone-market growth and the first Q3 to grow year over year since Q3 2018. Western Europe, Latin America and Japan were among the strongest regions. Samsung and Apple remained the two largest brands, while Motorola also recorded its highest-ever quarterly smartphone volume. The recovery is one plausible contributor to Google’s result, alongside Pixel-specific momentum, but the report does not assign Google’s record to any single cause.
What the record does—and does not—establish
- It supports: Google had a particularly strong quarter for smartphone volume, and the Pixel 9 launch coincided with that milestone. Google also said demand for the new devices was strong.
- It does not establish: Pixel 9’s exact sales, revenue or profitability; that Pixel became a top-five global smartphone brand; or that the phones took share directly from Apple or Samsung.
- It does not settle durability: One quarter cannot show whether the volume record became a lasting trend. The launch timing shift and broader market recovery complicate year-over-year comparisons.
For additional historical context, contemporaneous reporting put Google’s 2023 Pixel shipments at about 10 million and described a target of exceeding 10 million in 2024. Those are annual shipment figures, not Q3 2024 sell-through, and should not be combined as if they measured the same thing. The report on the 2023 shipment estimate does not supply a Pixel-specific Q3 unit count.

The takeaway for readers
Pixel 9 arrived alongside a genuine Google smartphone-volume record, and Google’s own comments point to strong launch demand. But “record sales” needs careful wording: Counterpoint measured a record in smartphone volume, while Alphabet reported company and segment revenue without isolating Pixel. The result is a meaningful sign of Pixel momentum, not proof that Pixel 9 drove Alphabet’s revenue record or that the quarter’s growth would continue at the same pace.
