They are separate features, not a universal redesign, and availability depends on your card issuer, device, browser, merchant, provider and country.
What changed
Google’s announcement, reported the following day by Android Central, grouped three checkout improvements around convenience, security and spending flexibility.
| Feature | What Google announced | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Card-benefit labels | Selected rewards or benefits could appear in Chrome’s desktop autofill menu for eligible American Express and Capital One cards. | Initial issuer and browser support was narrow; Google did not promise that every reward or card term would be shown. |
| Expanded BNPL | More U.S. merchant websites and Android apps could show installment options, including Affirm and Zip. | Approval, fees, repayment terms, refunds and credit reporting are controlled by the third-party provider and transaction. |
| Biometric or PIN autofill | Chrome and Android users could authenticate with a fingerprint, face scan or device screen-lock PIN before full saved card details were revealed. | Device security, Chrome behavior and merchant support vary. Autofill authentication is not the same as payment approval or a fraud decision. |
The primary announcement is at Google’s blog. Because it describes a May 2024 rollout, it should not be read as proof that every feature is available to every user in 2026.
Who can see card benefits?
At launch, Google described the benefit display for select American Express and Capital One cards in desktop Chrome. A label could appear in the card autofill drop-down while you were choosing a payment card. Examples reported by Android Central included cash-back percentages and category multipliers.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
This was a decision aid, not a complete rewards optimizer. Google said it planned to expand support to more cards, but did not give a timetable or guarantee that all benefits would be included. The announcement does not establish support for mobile Chrome, every card variant or every issuer.
What the label may not tell you
- Rewards can depend on merchant-category coding, spending caps, activation requirements or rotating categories.
- An advertised percentage may exclude particular merchants, services, taxes or shipping charges.
- Annual fees, foreign-transaction fees, redemption value and transfer-partner value are not necessarily reflected.
- Purchase protection, extended warranties and other insurance-style benefits were not identified as part of the displayed feature.
- Two cards may show similar labels even though their terms, caps or redemption options differ.
Use the label as a prompt to check the issuer’s current benefits terms, not as proof that Google has calculated the best card for the entire transaction. If no label appears, the card, issuer, browser, merchant or benefit may simply be outside the supported combination.
How the BNPL expansion works
Google said shoppers in the United States could see more BNPL choices at participating merchant websites and in more Android apps. The announcement named Affirm and Zip as examples. Depending on the checkout, you might link an existing provider account or apply during the purchase.

Google is surfacing a third-party financing option; it is not lending the money or setting the repayment contract. The provider decides whether you qualify and sets the applicable schedule, fees, interest, late-payment treatment and credit-reporting policy. A BNPL button therefore does not mean automatic approval, universal availability or an interest-free plan.

Check the total cost before accepting
- Read the total repayment amount, not only the installment shown on the first screen.
- Check whether interest, an account fee, late fee or other charge applies.
- Note every due date and whether autopay will debit a bank account or card.
- Review the provider’s policy on credit reporting, collections and missed payments.
- Find out how refunds, partial returns and canceled orders affect the installments.
- Ask whether the purchase is affordable without borrowing; a smaller installment does not reduce the price.
Missed payments can lead to fees, collection activity or credit consequences, but the exact result depends on the provider and product. Support for repayment, disputes and refunds generally comes from the merchant or BNPL provider rather than Google.
How biometric card autofill works
Google described an autofill flow in which Chrome or Android asks you to authenticate before revealing full saved card details. Supported methods can include a fingerprint, face scan or the device’s screen-lock PIN. Google also described a device-unlock setting that requires the device to be unlocked before full card details are revealed.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. - Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
- Save a payment card for Chrome or the applicable Google payment/autofill system.
- Open a participating checkout in Chrome or an Android app.
- Select the card field or the available Google payment/autofill option.
- Choose the saved card.
- When prompted, authenticate with your enrolled biometric or screen-lock PIN.
- Check the populated card, billing, shipping and order information before submitting.
Labels and settings can differ by Chrome and Android version, so there is no single menu path that can be guaranteed for every device. The security prompt confirms access to saved card data. It does not authorize the charge by itself, guarantee issuer approval or replace a merchant fraud check, 3-D Secure challenge or other verification. Google also said additional requirements may appear when suspicious activity is detected.
Why a feature may not appear
No reward label
- The card is not an eligible American Express or Capital One variant.
- You are using mobile Chrome or another browser instead of the desktop Chrome context described at launch.
- The card is not saved to the relevant autofill system.
- The merchant, transaction category or benefit is not supported.
- The displayed data is unavailable or does not cover that card’s terms.
No BNPL option
- The merchant or Android app has not enabled a supported provider.
- The purchase, location or basket is outside provider eligibility rules.
- The provider declined the application or requires additional verification.
- The merchant’s checkout does not support that payment path.
No biometric prompt
- Autofill or saved-payment access is disabled.
- No fingerprint or face credential is enrolled, or the device requires its PIN instead.
- The checkout requests the card security code through a different flow.
- The merchant does not support the relevant Google autofill integration.
Autofill succeeds but payment fails
A populated form only means that card information was inserted. Check the billing address, expiration date and available credit, then follow any issuer or merchant verification prompt. If the bank declines the transaction, use the issuer’s instructions or another supported payment method.
Google Pay or Google Wallet?
The 2024 announcement used the Google Pay name and covered Google checkout integrations. Google’s consumer payment branding and app surfaces have evolved since then, so current users may encounter Google Wallet or Chrome payment/autofill settings instead. The safest approach is to use the payment and autofill controls shown on your current device rather than searching for an assumed “Google Pay” menu. Google’s current Wallet destination is wallet.google, while Chrome information is at google.com/chrome.

Do not treat the 2024 feature list as a complete description of Google’s 2026 products. A feature can remain technically possible while its label, app location or rollout changes.
How these changes compare with alternatives
For card rewards, the issuer’s benefits page remains the authoritative place to check exclusions, caps and redemption rules. If a checkout does not support Google’s autofill path, alternatives include direct card entry, a bank-issued virtual card where available, a merchant wallet or another browser/device wallet. Those options have different protections and compatibility; none is automatically best for every purchase.
Biometric autofill is the clearest convenience improvement in this update because it reduces manual entry while adding an access check. It does not make a merchant transaction fraud-proof, and anyone who can unlock your device may be able to access saved payment information depending on your settings.

Google’s May 2024 update made checkout potentially faster and more informative, but each feature has a different boundary. Card-benefit labels were initially limited to selected Amex and Capital One cards in desktop Chrome. BNPL added payment flexibility, not a discount, and its financial consequences come from the provider. Biometric autofill can protect access to saved details, but it is only one step in a payment’s security chain. Check the actual options on your device and checkout, and read the issuer or provider terms before relying on any label or installment plan.
