If Google Pay is not working in a store, first unlock your Android phone, make sure NFC is on, and check that Google Wallet is the default contactless-payment app. Then check the card’s status in Wallet and try another reader. If the phone registers the tap but the payment is declined—or Wallet says the card is suspended—contact the card issuer. Google Wallet is the app for stored cards and in-store tap-to-pay; Google Pay is still used for online and in-app payments and at checkout where accepted. Google explains the distinction between Wallet and Google Pay.
Try these quick fixes first
- Unlock the phone with its screen lock before paying.
- Hold the back of the phone against the terminal’s contactless reader for a few seconds. Move it slightly: NFC antenna placement varies by phone.
- Try another reader, or ask the cashier to cancel or reset the current transaction before you tap again.
- Check that NFC is on and Google Wallet is selected as the default payment app.
- If the transaction still fails, try another card in Wallet or use a physical payment method. This also helps distinguish a card issue from a phone or terminal issue.
Google recommends repositioning the phone, trying another reader, and confirming that the store accepts mobile payments. A thick, metal, magnetic, or wallet-style case may affect positioning, so remove it temporarily if the phone does not react. See Google’s tap-to-pay troubleshooting steps.
Identify where the payment is failing
“Not working” can mean that Wallet will not open, the reader does not detect the phone, a card is not ready for contactless payments, or a transaction is declined after a successful tap. Those symptoms point to different fixes.
| What happens | Check next |
|---|---|
| The reader does nothing | Phone unlocked, NFC, default payment app, phone position, case, and reader acceptance. |
| Wallet shows a setup or security warning | Card status, issuer verification, NFC availability, Android version, and device certification. |
| The phone reacts, but the transaction is declined | Try another reader; if the same card fails elsewhere, contact the issuer. |
| Only one card fails | Open that card in Wallet and check its status; ask its issuer about eligibility or authorization. |
| Every card fails on this phone | Check NFC, default wallet, screen lock, certification, and software. |
| Only one shop or terminal fails | Ask the merchant to reset the transaction or try another reader; the store must accept contactless payments. |
Google’s Google Pay API status dashboard covers developer payment APIs; it does not confirm the status of every consumer Wallet tap-to-pay transaction. If Wallet works elsewhere and only one checkout fails, start with that terminal or merchant rather than assuming a service-wide outage.

Check the card’s status in Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet.
- Select the payment card.
- Read any message shown on or above the card and follow its prompt.
- Card not set up: Tap Finish setup and complete the bank’s verification.
- Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet: Enable NFC in Settings, if the phone has NFC hardware.
- Card suspended: Contact the bank or card issuer. Wallet’s message does not establish whether the restriction is temporary or permanent.
- No warning: Wallet considers the card ready for contactless payment, but the issuer or terminal can still decline a transaction.
A card saved in Wallet may still work for Google purchases or online and in-app checkout even if it is not configured for in-store tap-to-pay. The supported-payment list and card rules depend on country, bank, and card type; a bank’s participation does not guarantee that every card it issues is eligible. Check Google’s U.S. supported-payment-methods page if you are in the United States, or look for the relevant country’s list.
Turn on NFC and select the default payment app
Enable NFC
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC.
- Turn NFC on.
Menu names vary by manufacturer. If that path is missing, search Settings for NFC. Some phones, including certain low-cost or region-specific models, do not have an NFC chip. NFC tag-reading capability alone also does not establish that a phone meets the additional requirements for Wallet contactless payments.
Set Google Wallet as the default
- Open Settings.
- Go to Connected devices → Connection preferences → Contactless payments.
- Select Google Wallet or Google Pay, depending on the phone’s wording.
If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for contactless payments or default payment app. Google requires Wallet to be the default NFC wallet for contactless payments; see Tap to pay with your phone.

Unlock the phone and reset a stuck terminal transaction
Google Wallet requires a screen lock and identity verification before payment. Verification can use a PIN, pattern, password, fingerprint, or supported class 3 biometric face unlock. If prompted for a PIN, the terminal or phone may be asking for the Android screen-lock PIN, not the physical card’s PIN.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a reader asks you to insert or swipe a card after a phone tap, cancel or reset the terminal transaction—often with its X button, or by asking the cashier—then unlock the phone and tap again. Open Wallet first if automatic detection does not work. Repeatedly tapping while the old terminal transaction is still active may not start a fresh attempt.

- Confirm that Google Wallet contactless payments are available in your country or region.
- Check that the specific bank and card type are supported. Issuers can restrict particular cards even when the bank appears on a supported list.
- Make sure the name and address in your Google Payments profile match the information held by the bank.
- Complete verification through the method the issuer offers, such as its app, text message, or email.
- Try entering the card details manually instead of scanning them, or try another eligible card.
- If setup still fails, call the number on the back of the card; the issuer controls card eligibility and verification.
Google’s card-addition guidance also identifies unsupported NFC hardware and device security problems as possible reasons a phone cannot be set up for contactless payments.
Resolve a “phone doesn’t meet security requirements” warning
Google Wallet may block contactless payments if a phone is rooted, has a custom ROM or modified factory software, uses an unlocked bootloader, runs a developer or beta Android build, or is otherwise uncertified. Reinstalling Wallet does not bypass these device-integrity requirements.
Check Play Protect certification
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture → Settings → About.
- Check Play Protect certification.
If the phone is modified or uncertified, the recovery path may require restoring the manufacturer-approved software and, where appropriate, relocking the bootloader. The process is specific to the phone and can erase data or affect support. Back up important data and follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than attempting an improvised fix. Google says Wallet does not work on rooted devices and does not support work profiles; use the personal profile on a device with both. See Google Wallet’s download and requirements guidance and its security troubleshooting guidance.

Check Android and app updates
Google Wallet requires Android 9 or later on phones; that minimum took effect on June 10, 2024. Google’s current requirement is documented at Your version of Android doesn’t support Google Wallet.
Install available updates for Android, Google Wallet, Google Play Services, and Google Play Store, then restart the phone and retry. Google’s setup guidance calls for a current Wallet app and Google Play Services. A restart is a low-risk check, not a guaranteed fix for a card or issuer decline.
Avoid clearing app data as an early step: it can remove locally stored cards or settings and may mean setting cards up again. Consider device-specific app recovery only after checking card eligibility, NFC, default-wallet selection, screen lock, and certification.

If Google Wallet will not open or cards disappeared
Open Wallet through Android Settings
If the Wallet home screen shows an access error, try Google’s alternate route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google → All services → Settings for Google apps → Google Wallet.
This is a workaround, not a guaranteed repair. Google notes that payment with the default card may still be possible when the Wallet home screen is unavailable. Then restart the phone and update Wallet and Google Play Services. Check that you are using the personal Android profile; avoid uninstalling Wallet or clearing its data until you understand what may need to be set up again.
After a phone change or software reset
Cards on a new phone may need to be set up for tap-to-pay again, including issuer verification. Follow Wallet’s setup prompts for each card rather than assuming that a card saved on the old phone has automatically transferred for contactless use.
Know when to contact the bank, Google, the manufacturer, or the merchant
| Problem | Next contact |
|---|---|
| A card is suspended, declined at multiple locations, or cannot be verified | Bank or card issuer |
| Only one reader or shop fails | Merchant or cashier; ask them to check contactless acceptance or reset the terminal |
| The phone fails certification or security checks after you have checked its settings | Phone manufacturer; contact Google Wallet support if the device meets the manufacturer’s requirements |
| Wallet still fails across cards after NFC, default app, screen lock, certification, and updates are checked | Google Wallet support |
| A managed or work-profile device blocks payment | Employer or device administrator |
For an urgent purchase, use another eligible card or a physical payment method instead of making repeated attempts. If one card works and another does not on the same phone and reader, that is useful evidence for the issuer, but it does not by itself prove the phone is fault-free.
