Google Pay in the U.S. Is Not Fully Shutting Down: What the June Changes Mean

The U.S. Google Pay app and peer-to-peer payments ended in June 2024, while the separate Google Pay Balance Card was removed in June 2026. Google Wallet still supports tap-to-pay, stored cards, and eligible balances.

Google Pay is not disappearing entirely in the United States. Google retired the standalone U.S. Google Pay app and its person-to-person payment features on June 4, 2024. Separately, Google removed the virtual Google Pay Balance Card on June 22, 2026. Google Wallet remains the U.S. app for tap-to-pay, stored credit and debit cards, transit passes, and other supported wallet items.

Updated August 18, 2026.

The two June changes are separate

Date What changed What it means
June 4, 2024 The standalone U.S. Google Pay app was discontinued, including its send, request, and receive functions for person-to-person payments. Use Google Wallet for in-store card payments and stored cards. Google Wallet is not a replacement for the old U.S. peer-to-peer feature.
June 22, 2026 The virtual Google Pay Balance Card was removed as a payment method. Other credit and debit cards in Google Wallet were not affected. Remaining Google Pay funds can still be transferred out.

Google described the 2024 retirement in its announcement at blog.google/products/google-pay/payment-apps-update/. The Balance Card change and balance options are documented at Google Pay Help.

What still works in the U.S.

Tap-to-pay in stores

Android users can continue making contactless purchases with supported cards in Google Wallet wherever Google Pay or contactless-payment marks are accepted. Eligibility depends on the phone, Android version, NFC capability, screen-lock settings, card issuer, and country. Check Google’s current U.S. compatibility information at Supported payment methods in the United States.

Stored payment cards and passes

Credit and debit cards used for contactless payments remain part of the Google Wallet experience. Wallet can also hold supported transit cards, loyalty items, passes, and some digital IDs. Availability varies by issuer, state, device, and account; Google’s overview is at Google Wallet Help.

Some online checkout payments

“Google Pay” can still appear as a checkout option on participating websites and apps. That label refers to Google’s payment method and infrastructure, not necessarily the retired standalone app. Merchant, card, device, and account support determine whether the button appears. Google’s buyer terms continue to describe Google Pay as an online payment method: Google Wallet terms.

What no longer works

  • The old U.S. Google Pay app is no longer the normal consumer app for managing payments.
  • Sending, requesting, or receiving money through that U.S. app ended June 4, 2024.
  • The Google Pay Balance Card can no longer be selected as a payment method after June 22, 2026.

Do not confuse the Balance Card with an ordinary debit or credit card stored in Google Wallet. The June 2026 change applied to the separate virtual card tied to a Google Pay balance, not to every card in Wallet.

What happens to money in a Google Pay balance?

Google says remaining funds stay available. You can view the balance in Google Wallet, transfer it to an eligible linked bank account or debit card, and access transaction history and statements. Google currently says there is no deadline or time limit for withdrawing the remaining funds; that policy is subject to Google’s current account terms.

Transfer from the Google Wallet app

  1. Open the Google Wallet app.
  2. Tap the balance or profile button.
  3. Select Transfer out.
  4. Choose an eligible linked bank account or debit card.
  5. Complete any verification and submit the transfer.

Labels can differ by Android and Wallet version. Google’s balance help page has the current account-specific instructions: Google Pay balance and Balance Card help.

  2. Open the Google Pay balance area.
  3. Choose the transfer-out option.
  4. Select an eligible linked bank account or debit card and follow the prompts.

Google’s web transfer guidance is at Transfer money from Google Pay.

What to do now, based on how you used Google Pay

Your use case Next step
Only tap-to-pay Open or install Google Wallet, confirm your preferred card, and check NFC, screen-lock, device, and issuer requirements.
Stored cards Review the cards in Google Wallet. If one is missing, verify the Google account and add the card again if the issuer supports Wallet.
Google Pay balance Open the balance area in Wallet or on the web and transfer the funds to an eligible linked destination. Save statements if you may need them.
Sending money to friends Use a separate peer-to-peer service or a bank-supported transfer option. Google Wallet should not be presented as the old U.S. Google Pay send/request/receive replacement.
Online purchases Look for a Google Pay checkout button and select a supported card. Availability is controlled by the merchant and payment method.

Troubleshooting after the change

A card is missing

  • Confirm that Wallet is signed in to the Google account that owns the card.
  • Check the card issuer and network against Google’s U.S. supported list.
  • Add the card again in Google Wallet and complete issuer verification.
  • If tokenization or verification fails, contact the bank or card issuer.

The balance or transfer option is missing

  • Use the U.S. account that held the balance, not a different Google account.
  • Confirm that an eligible bank account or debit card is linked and verified.
  • Check for a pending dispute, transaction, or identity-review requirement.
  • Try Google Wallet or the official Google payments website instead of the obsolete app.

For unresolved errors, Google’s balance documentation and buyer terms describe available support and dispute processes: Google Wallet buyer terms.

Is the change worldwide?

No. The app retirement described here is a U.S.-specific change. Google’s announcement said the Google Pay app serves different local purposes in India and Singapore, so those markets do not follow the U.S. transition in the same way. Menus and eligibility can also vary by Android version, Wallet version, bank, card, account, and region.

Google Pay, Google Wallet, and Google Pay Balance: the useful distinction

  • Google Pay app: The standalone U.S. consumer app retired June 4, 2024.
  • Google Wallet: The current Android wallet for supported cards, tap-to-pay, passes, and related items.
  • Google Pay as a checkout method: A payment option that can still appear on participating websites and apps.
  • Google Pay balance: Funds that remain accessible for transfer under Google’s current help guidance.
  • Google Pay Balance Card: The separate virtual payment card removed June 22, 2026.

Bottom line for U.S. users

If you pay in stores, move to Google Wallet; you do not need a new phone solely because the old app was retired. If you held a Google Pay balance, transfer it through Wallet or Google’s web tools. If you used Google Pay to split bills or send money, choose a separate peer-to-peer service because Google Wallet does not restore that discontinued U.S. function.
