Google Drive is the file-storage and collaboration service; Google One is the consumer subscription that expands the storage shared by Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. Google One does not replace the Drive app or create a second Drive. It increases your account quota and may add family sharing, Google AI, Photos tools, support and other benefits, depending on plan, country and account.
The prices below are U.S. monthly figures visible on Google’s pages on August 18, 2026. Google’s plan catalog is changing, and your checkout screen is the final authority.

Google describes Drive as the place to organize files and Google One as the subscription that adds storage across Drive, Gmail and Photos. You can use Google Drive without paying for Google One.
How Google storage is shared
Every Google Account includes up to 15GB shared among Drive, Gmail, Google Photos and certain backups or related account data. A 100GB Google One plan means 100GB total for that pool—not 100GB for Drive plus another 100GB for Photos.

- Large Photos videos, Gmail attachments, Drive files and device backups can all consume the same quota.
- Trash may continue counting until items are permanently deleted.
- Deleting Drive files will not solve a limit problem caused mainly by Gmail or Photos.
Use Google’s storage-management controls in your account to identify the largest categories before buying more capacity. Google One increases the quota; it does not automatically clean, reorganize or independently back up everything.
Google One plans and U.S. prices
The following reflects what Google’s U.S. pages visibly showed on August 18, 2026. Labels and capacities are not currently consistent between Google’s dedicated pricing page and its comparison page, and prices vary by location, currency, billing term and account. Google’s pages therefore do not support treating one AI Plus price-and-capacity combination as universal. A June 2026 report described $4.99 and 400GB, while Google’s live dedicated page showed $9.99 and 2TB. Verify the exact offer for your country and account before subscribing. Google announced major AI-subscription changes on May 19, 2026, in its AI subscription update.
Benefits beyond storage
Family sharing
Basic and higher plans can generally be shared with up to five additional people, six people total. Everyone keeps a separate Google Account and private Gmail, Drive and Photos content; members draw from one shared pool. Some premium benefits are limited to the plan manager or vary by feature. Google says family members on AI Pro may receive AI benefits, but eligibility is not identical for every feature.

Photos and device backups
Google Photos backups use the same pool. Depending on plan, Google One may add Photos editing or management tools. It does not make Photos unlimited or guarantee unlimited original-quality storage. Google One can support certain Android backups, but cloud synchronization is not a complete independent backup: deletion, account compromise or sync errors can affect the only copy. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable files; independent cloud-storage coverage likewise cautions that Drive is not a full backup system (TechRadar).
AI and other bundled benefits
Google’s comparison page combines storage with Gemini usage limits, model access, Deep Research, Google Flow, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, NotebookLM-related access, and other products. Higher tiers may also show Google Store rewards, expert support, YouTube Premium Lite, Google Home or Health benefits. Availability depends on country, age, plan, account and changing usage limits. Do not assume that similar storage tiers include the same AI access, or that every family member receives every benefit.

Which option fits?
- No paid plan: Your account is comfortably below 15GB and you do not need more Photos, Gmail or Drive capacity.
- Basic: You need modest extra space, inexpensive family sharing or storage rather than AI.
- 200GB or another storage-focused tier: Several people need photo and video capacity but not advanced Gemini tools. Confirm the exact middle-tier label in your account.
- AI Plus: You want entry-level Gemini features and storage, and the capacity and price shown at checkout suit you. Its current Google-page conflict makes verification essential.
- AI Pro: You need substantially more storage and actively use Gemini, Deep Research, Flow or AI in productivity apps. Count bundled benefits only if you would otherwise buy them.
If you primarily need Microsoft Office and Windows integration, compare OneDrive. For straightforward synchronization and sharing, consider Dropbox. Apple households may prefer iCloud+. A local or NAS library offers control and a second copy but requires hardware, maintenance and an off-site backup plan.

- Sign in to the Google Account that should receive the membership.
- Go to one.google.com.
- Select Upgrade on the left.
- Choose the displayed plan or storage limit.
- Review the price, renewal date and payment method, then select Subscribe.
With multiple accounts open, a card can be charged while storage is added to a different account. Google says a new upgrade may take up to 24 hours to appear.

How to change or cancel
- Open one.google.com in the purchasing account.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Change membership plan or Cancel membership, then confirm.
Cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the billing cycle, so paid benefits continue until then. If the account is above the free limit afterward, Gmail, Drive and Photos can be interrupted. A plan bought through Apple, a carrier or another reseller generally must be managed through that provider. Google’s detailed rules are in its storage-support guide.
Google One is not Google Workspace
Google One is a consumer subscription. Google Workspace is a separate business service with administration, organization storage, custom email and business support. Choosing Google One does not provide Workspace features.
