Yes. Google Lens can identify a product from a shelf photo and may show retailer prices, deals, reviews, purchase links, similar products and local availability signals. Google announced this in-store shopping update on November 19, 2024, so it is an established feature rather than a new 2026 launch. Results still depend on the retailer’s data and should not be treated as a guaranteed price match or real-time shelf count.
What Google Lens does for in-store shoppers
Lens originally focused on recognizing objects and finding visually similar images. Its shopping results now connect a recognized retail product with Google’s Shopping Graph and merchant information. Depending on the item and location, a scan can show:
- an exact or likely product match
- prices from multiple retailers
- current offers or deals
- customer reviews
- places to buy
- similar products
- local inventory signals for the item or alternatives
- whether the photographed store’s price appears competitive
Google’s in-store example involved photographing a toy at Target and seeing reviews and similar items listed as available at that location. The result page can also include shopping ads, so it is not a complete, neutral catalog of every seller. Google’s product-shopping announcement explains the commercial results, while its November 19, 2024 announcement describes the in-store use case.
“Competitive price” means a quick comparison with offers Google found. It is not a price-match guarantee, does not include every local seller, and does not automatically account for coupons, loyalty discounts or membership pricing.

How to use Lens in a store
- Open the Google app on an Android phone or iPhone.
- Tap the Lens icon in or beside the Search bar.
- Point the camera at the product, packaging, label or barcode, then take a photo. You can also upload an existing image.
- If Lens selects the wrong object, crop the image or select only the product.
- Review the identified item and open the shopping results for prices, deals, reviews, sellers and local signals.
- Before acting on a result, compare the model, size, color, quantity, condition, store and fulfillment terms.
On Android, Google documents the path as Google app → Lens → Search Image → take or upload a photo. A clearly visible barcode, UPC/EAN or model number usually produces a better exact match than a photo of an unbranded object. Google’s Lens help page lists barcodes as a way to find product information and places to buy: Lens shopping-result guidance.
If the first scan is wrong
- Move closer and improve the lighting.
- Photograph the front and back of the package instead of the shelf.
- Scan the barcode or capture the model/stock number.
- Crop out neighboring products and price labels.
- Search the identified model number manually in Google Shopping.
How reliable are inventory results?
Lens may say that the photographed product or a similar product is available, but that normally means it is listed as available in Google’s local-inventory systems. Google relies on retailer-submitted product, price, store and availability data, including feeds and integrations described in its merchant requirements and free-listings guidance.

That data can lag behind a sale, return, misplaced item or stockroom change. “Available nearby” may refer to another branch, not the store you are standing in. Similar products in stock are also alternatives; they do not prove that the photographed SKU is available.
For an expensive, scarce or time-sensitive purchase, open the retailer’s own listing and confirm the branch, pickup window and quantity. If the retailer does not provide suitable local inventory data, Lens may have little or no useful store-level information. Google can host some in-store product and price data for eligible merchants that do not publish it on their own sites, but coverage remains dependent on merchant participation: Google-hosted availability details.

How to compare prices without being misled
Lens can find lower-looking numbers, but the first price is not necessarily an apples-to-apples comparison. Check all of the following before deciding that another offer is cheaper:
- Identity: exact brand, model, generation and SKU.
- Variant: capacity, dimensions, color, bundle contents and multipack quantity.
- Condition: new, used, refurbished, open-box or damaged.
- Total cost: shipping, delivery fees, taxes and pickup charges.
- Eligibility: online-only, member-only, loyalty, coupon or promotional pricing.
- Fulfillment: pickup versus delivery and the relevant store location.
Google’s store-specific data rules require submitted prices and availability to match the associated landing-page experience, but that does not make every result identical in configuration or checkout terms. Open the seller’s page and verify the final price before traveling or abandoning the in-store purchase.

Products Lens handles best—and those it does not
Usually strong matches
- electronics with model numbers
- toys with recognizable packaging
- beauty products
- books
- appliances
- branded clothing and accessories
- items with UPC, EAN or another barcode
Commonly difficult matches
- generic or unbranded goods
- handmade or used items
- visually identical products with different specifications
- multipacks and bundles
- packaging that has recently changed
- clothing where size, color or season is decisive
- furniture and décor, where results may be visually similar rather than identical
A visually convincing result can still be the wrong capacity, generation or bundle. Treat image recognition as the starting point and the model number or barcode as the identity check.

Lens and AI Mode are related but separate. Lens starts with an image and identifies a product. AI Mode can conduct a broader local-shopping search and, when appropriate, use “Let Google Call” to contact nearby stores for inventory, prices or promotions. Google’s support documentation warns that AI-generated answers may contain mistakes: AI Mode local pricing and inventory help. Google Maps can also help find nearby stores selling a product, but a store listing is not proof that the exact item is on the shelf: Maps and Lens shopping features.
Where shopping results are available
Google’s Pixel Camera help page lists shopping results in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Availability can still differ by product category, language, account, app version and rollout. A supported country does not mean every retailer or every Lens shopping function is available there.
A practical check before you rely on a result
- Confirm the brand, model number or barcode.
- Match size, capacity, color, quantity and generation.
- Check whether the listing is new, used, refurbished or open-box.
- Confirm the seller and store address.
- Include shipping, tax, pickup fees and membership requirements.
- Look for a recent inventory update or pickup confirmation.
- For a scarce or costly item, call the store before making the trip.
The Bottom Line
Google Lens is a useful first-pass shopping assistant: photograph an item, identify it and compare available prices, reviews and local listings. It is not an independent shelf scanner, an exhaustive price database or a price-match promise. Verify the exact variant, total cost and store-level availability before relying on the result.
