The latest dated Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) gold reference available for this article is USD 4,135.69 per ounce, updated 3 October 2026. It is a market benchmark—not the price per gram a Saudi jewelry shop must charge. To estimate a gram benchmark, divide by 31.1035 grams per troy ounce and convert at SAMA’s listed USD/SAR rate of SAR 3.7500 per USD: approximately SAR 498.70 per gram before purity adjustments, dealer pricing, workmanship, and any applicable tax. Check SAMA’s live figures for a current quote.
What is the gold rate in Saudi Arabia today?
Gold prices move, so a rate is only useful when its timestamp, currency, unit, and purity basis are clear. SAMA’s commodity summary showed gold at USD 4,135.69 per ounce, with the metals data last updated 3 October 2026. SAMA also showed USD 1 = SAR 3.7500 in the same current result. These are reference figures, not a live per-gram quote from a Saudi retailer. See SAMA’s gold reference and SAMA’s currency-rate summary.
For an approximate conversion, a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Dividing USD 4,135.69 by 31.1035 and multiplying by SAR 3.7500 gives about SAR 498.70 per gram at the stated ounce-market benchmark and exchange rate. This calculation does not account for the lower gold content of jewelry alloys or the costs and terms added by a seller.
Why a shop’s price differs from the market benchmark
A jewelry quote depends on the piece’s gold content and weight, plus the seller’s pricing. Higher karat gold contains a greater proportion of gold; workmanship charges reflect factors such as design and retailer policy. Saudi Gold describes its price information as approximate and says prices can vary by dealer, region, or manufacturer. Its indicative making-charge bands are estimates from that publisher, not an official Saudi tariff:
#1 Best Overall
| Purity | Indicative making charge |
|---|---|
| 24K | 1–5% (Saudi Gold estimate) |
| 22K | 5–15% (Saudi Gold estimate) |
| 21K | 10–20% (Saudi Gold estimate) |
| 18K | 15–25% or more (Saudi Gold estimate) |
These percentages should not be treated as a guaranteed charge or as the final price. Ask the shop to state its own workmanship amount and explain how it was calculated. Saudi Gold’s overview of gold pricing and workmanship sets out the underlying calculation.
How to estimate the base gold value and compare quotes
- Confirm the karat and weight. Check the item’s stated purity and weight in grams. The base value depends on both.
- Get the seller’s gold rate and timestamp. Ask which rate per gram the shop is using and when it was set. Do not compare one seller’s 21K quote with another seller’s 24K rate.
- Calculate the base metal value. Multiply the quoted gold rate per gram by the item’s weight. This is a starting value, not the purchase total.
- Request an itemized workmanship charge. Confirm whether it is a fixed amount or percentage and what it applies to.
- Check the tax shown on the invoice. Ask the seller to identify the tax and the amount charged rather than assuming a general rule applies to every gold product.
- Ask about buyback terms. A resale or exchange deduction can affect the value you recover later; compare the seller’s terms before buying.
Saudi Gold describes the purchase calculation as base gold value plus workmanship, followed by tax calculated on the resulting amount. Because a seller’s actual quote and applicable tax treatment can differ, use the invoice breakdown rather than treating that description as a universal tariff.

What to know about VAT and carrying gold across a border
ZATCA’s general VAT guidance describes VAT as an indirect tax on goods and services and recognizes exceptions, but the available general guidance does not settle the treatment of every gold purity, investment product, or transaction. Check current ZATCA VAT information and the seller’s itemized invoice for the specific purchase; do not assume that all gold is taxable or exempt.
For specified international traveler cases, the Saudi government’s travel declaration service lists gold bars, precious metals, gemstones, and jewelry valued at SAR 40,000 or more (or the equivalent) among declarable items. The requirement depends on the traveler’s circumstances; consult the travel declaration service for the applicable entry or exit situation before carrying such items.
