On August 15, 2013, Tophatter released an iPad version of its rapid, real-time auction service. Instead of leaving buyers to search a catalog, the app placed products into category-based virtual rooms, moved them through roughly 90-second bidding events, and added chat, reminders and social participation. The larger tablet screen was intended to make discovery and product viewing easier than on Tophatter’s quick-action iPhone app.
This was a historical product launch, not a current app recommendation. The contemporary account confirms what Tophatter introduced in 2013; it does not establish that the original app or service remains available today.
What Tophatter launched on August 15, 2013
Tophatter’s iPad release extended an existing auction experience from the web and iPhone to a tablet-optimized interface. The company’s web platform had launched in January 2012, and its iOS app had arrived approximately four months before the iPad version, according to VentureBeat’s contemporary report.
The distinction mattered because Tophatter was not merely stretching an iPhone screen. The company described the iPhone as a device for fast action, while the iPad offered more room to browse merchandise and inspect larger product images before bidding.

The launch-era categories included jewelry, fashion, handbags, cosmetics and electronics. Electronics had recently been added as an auction category, but the list was presented as examples rather than a complete catalog for every market.
How a Tophatter auction worked
- A seller submitted an item. Tophatter assigned the item a scheduled auction time.
- The item entered a category room. Buyers could move among rooms organized around different types of merchandise.
- The item reached the front. Once presented, bidding began in the live room.
- Buyers competed for about 90 seconds. This was the launch-era description, not a universal rule for every later Tophatter auction.
- The sale ended and the next item appeared. The sequence created a continuous stream rather than a set of isolated listings.
- Participants could browse ahead. Buyers could preview upcoming items and set reminders for products they wanted to watch.
- Chat added live interaction. Buyers could ask questions while sellers and users appeared with avatars.
The format compressed the normal marketplace process into a short event. A buyer had to identify what mattered, decide whether the price made sense and bid before the clock ran out.
Why the iPad mattered to Tophatter’s strategy
iPhone: immediacy
Tophatter’s iPhone experience emphasized quick participation. A small screen could be effective for responding to an auction already under way, checking a reminder or placing a fast bid.
iPad: discovery
The iPad’s larger display was positioned as better for exploring unfamiliar products, moving between rooms and viewing larger images. That made it a browsing and merchandising surface, not simply a bigger bidding button.

The web remained the broadest way to reach the service, but Tophatter’s live rooms were designed to feel more event-driven and socially immersive than ordinary catalog shopping. In the company’s product thesis, each device served a different shopping job.

A marketplace designed as an event
Tophatter’s leadership argued that traditional e-commerce sites were essentially “glorified product catalogs.” CEO Ashvin Kumar described real-time interaction, social signals and urgency as ways to make shopping feel closer to a live event or festival. Those statements were the company’s positioning, not independent evidence that the format improved conversion or customer welfare.
The design used several forms of pressure and engagement:
- A visible countdown shortened deliberation.
- Sequential items encouraged buyers to keep watching for the next opportunity.
- Rooms and avatars supplied a sense of shared participation.
- Chat made questions and reactions public and immediate.
- Reminders turned future listings into appointments.
For buyers, that could be entertaining and useful for discovering products they had not searched for. It could also turn winning into the goal, even when the item was not needed.

Tophatter therefore resembled live entertainment commerce more than a static auction archive. It was not automatically better or worse than eBay; it optimized for different behavior.
Financial trade-offs for buyers
What the format could offer
- Immediate feedback and a clear end point.
- Product discovery without knowing the exact search term.
- The ability to monitor several rooms and set reminders.
- Real-time questions through chat.
What buyers had to watch
- A 90-second timer left less time to compare prices, specifications, seller reputation, shipping and returns.
- Social competition could encourage impulse bids or herd behavior.
- A low winning bid was not necessarily a low total cost after shipping, taxes or an item’s actual quality.
- Rapid sequencing made it easy to overlook condition details or compatibility requirements.
- Chat answers did not replace formal authenticity, condition or return information.
The contemporary announcement did not provide independent consumer-protection testing, purchase data or evidence about typical final prices. A buyer considering any similar format should set a maximum all-in budget before bidding and treat the auction as a purchase decision, not a game score.

Implications for sellers
A scheduled room gave sellers concentrated exposure to an audience already watching auctions. Fast turnover, urgency and immediate questions could help a product attract attention. The format also rewarded clear photography and descriptions because buyers had little time to understand an item.
The trade-off was uncertainty. A short event could produce less competition than a longer listing, and products requiring extensive explanation were difficult to present in seconds. Sellers still needed accurate condition statements, authenticity information, shipping terms and workable returns. The 2013 announcement did not state seller fees, payout timing, fulfillment rules or dispute procedures, so those details should not be inferred from the launch story.
Where the company came from
Tophatter grew out of Blippy, a social-shopping service that shared information about what users and their friends were buying. After an unsuccessful repositioning around reviews, the company pivoted to live auctions.
The 2013 account reported that Blippy had raised $3.5 million from August Capital in 2010. At the time of the iPad launch, Tophatter was based in Palo Alto and had approximately 20 employees. Those are dated company-history details, not current funding, location or headcount.
VentureBeat also reported approximately $100,000 in daily sales and said the iOS app had doubled the business after its release about four months earlier. These were company-reported figures; the article did not define whether “sales” meant gross merchandise value, revenue or another metric, and it did not independently audit them. Any expectation that the iPad app would double the business again was a company goal, not a measured result.

The 2013 live-commerce landscape
Tophatter appeared during a period when online shopping was moving beyond pure search. Polyvore and Nasty Gal emphasized curation and merchandising; Wanelo emphasized social discovery; Gilt used flash-sale urgency; Poshmark, Threadflip and TheRealReal focused on resale; and Turntable and Shaker experimented with social, real-time online spaces. These services were not all direct competitors, but together they show the period’s interest in shopping as discovery, community and entertainment.

Tophatter was an early attempt to combine peer-to-peer commerce with a live room and a countdown. The launch anticipated features later associated with live shopping—chat, host or seller interaction, short auctions and entertainment-led discovery—but the announcement does not prove that Tophatter caused the later market or that its model was durable.
What the announcement did not establish
The launch story described the product and the company’s ambitions, but left important financial questions unanswered:
- Whether the reported daily sales were profitable.
- How often buyers returned or how many became repeat customers.
- Typical order values and seller retention.
- Shipping, taxes, returns, disputes and buyer-protection performance.
- Whether urgency translated into lasting marketplace liquidity.
- How reliably reminders, notifications and connectivity worked.
Those omissions matter because a compelling live interface cannot by itself establish good value, safe fulfillment or a sustainable business.
What can be verified about Tophatter today
The historical evidence confirms the iPad launch on August 15, 2013. It does not confirm current App Store availability, the continued operation of the original auction platform or an official successor.

Two pages on tophatters.co claim that the original service closed and was replaced, but their relationship to the original Tophatter company is not established by the available evidence: “What happened to Tophatter bidding app?” and “We Have Replaced The Famous Tophatter Bidding App.” Treat those claims as unverified rather than as authoritative corporate history.
A current live-auction analogue
Readers looking for the same broad idea today may encounter Whatnot, a separate live-shopping marketplace offering auctions, chat and flash sales at whatnot.com. It is not Tophatter and does not recreate the 2013 interface.
For sellers in the United States, Canada and Australia, Whatnot’s fee page lists an 8% commission for most categories plus a 2.9% payment-processing fee and a $0.30 transaction fee, with category exceptions and possible tax treatment for fees: official seller-fee documentation. Sellers apply through the app, schedule shows and complete verification; the stated shipping policy generally requires shipment within two business days, excluding weekends and holidays: seller onboarding and shipping policy.
The App Store listing reviewed for this comparison identifies the Whatnot app as “Only for iPhone,” so readers specifically seeking native iPad support should verify device compatibility before relying on it: Whatnot on the App Store.
