GnuCash is free, open-source personal and small-business accounting software released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). On Linux, the simplest route is usually your distribution’s software manager or package manager; Flatpak is a useful alternative if the repository version is too old, while a source build is best reserved for users who need more control and are prepared to maintain its dependencies.
After installation, use the Tutorial and Concepts Guide to learn the accounting basics and the GnuCash Manual as a quick reference for specific tasks. Before a major upgrade, make a dated backup: newer releases can change how data is stored, and reverting may require both an older program and a matching older data file.
Choose an installation method
Linux users usually install GnuCash and its dependencies through their distribution’s software management system, according to the GnuCash Wiki installation page. Check the package version offered by your distribution before choosing a different route. Distribution maintainers control when updates arrive, so the version in a repository may not match the latest stable release listed by the project.
| Method | Version freshness | Dependencies and system integration | Updates and maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distribution package | Depends on the distribution’s repository; may lag behind upstream. | Usually the simplest integration with the host system and its dependencies. | Updated through the distribution’s normal software-management tools. |
| Flatpak | The GnuCash Wiki describes Flatpak as a distribution-agnostic way to install recent stable or test versions; check the listing for the build you intend to use. | Provides a more self-contained application build than a distribution package. | Managed through Flatpak tools; the Wiki’s description does not establish a specific update schedule. |
| Source build | Lets you select a source version, subject to the project’s build instructions. | Requires installing and resolving the project’s build dependencies. | Requires hands-on build and dependency maintenance. |
For most people, start with the distribution package if it is current enough for their needs. Choose Flatpak when you want a more recent build without relying on your distribution’s packaging timetable. Build from source only if those options do not meet a specific requirement and you are comfortable following the project’s dependency and build guidance.

Install GnuCash on your Linux distribution
- Identify your distribution. Open its software manager, or use the package-manager documentation for your distribution.
- Search for “GnuCash” or “gnucash.” Check the available version and install it using the software manager’s normal process. Because package names and commands vary across distributions, use the exact instructions supplied by yours rather than assuming one command works everywhere.
- Consider Flatpak if the repository build is unsuitable. Follow the GnuCash Wiki’s Flatpak instructions and the setup guidance for your Linux distribution. The Wiki identifies Flatpak as an option for recent stable or test versions.
- Use a source build only when needed. Follow the project’s build instructions and install the required dependencies for your distribution before compiling.
- Launch GnuCash. Start it from your desktop application menu or, if available in your installation, from the command line. Create a new account file or open an existing one, then consult the built-in help for version-specific menus and workflows.
The GnuCash project’s download page lists version 5.16, and its news page has a release announcement dated 2026-06-28. Those are upstream project listings, not a guarantee that a particular Linux repository or Flatpak listing offers that version. Check the version shown by the installation source you choose.
Learn the basics before entering transactions

The Tutorial and Concepts Guide explains accounting concepts in more depth and teaches them through a tutorial. If you are new to bookkeeping, start with the guide; keep the manual handy when you need instructions for a specific task.

The GnuCash installation wiki warns that major upgrades can include feature or data-storage changes. If you later need to return to an older program version, the newer data file may not work with it; rollback can require an earlier copy of the data file as well as the older program.
