Global Smartphone Shipments Rebounded in Q4 2023, but 2023 Still Declined

Global smartphone shipments rebounded modestly in Q4 2023, led by uneven regional and vendor gains, but the full-year market still contracted.

Global smartphone shipments rose about 7% to 9% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2023, depending on the market tracker. That ended a long run of quarterly declines, but it did not reverse the full-year downturn: estimates put 2023 shipments roughly 4% to 5% below 2022. The rebound was real, modest and uneven—not proof that the market had returned to sustained growth.

What grew in Q4 2023?

The reported increase was in global smartphone shipments: phones sent by manufacturers into distribution channels. Shipments are not the same as sell-through, which measures devices purchased by consumers, and neither figure directly establishes revenue or vendor profit. Channel inventory can also affect shipments, so a rise in units does not by itself prove that consumers bought more phones.

Research firms publish estimates rather than a single universally agreed count. Their figures can differ because they use proprietary tracking models, channel coverage and assumptions, and may revise results at different times. The estimates are best read as a range, not averaged into a false point of precision.

Why a growing quarter did not erase the annual decline

A positive fourth quarter can coexist with a shrinking year. Shipments fell in the earlier quarters, leaving the full-year total below 2022 despite the late-year improvement. Estimates of the 2023 annual decline varied: S&P Global put it at 4.7%, TechInsights at 3.9%, and Canalys/Omdia at about 4%. Counterpoint’s earlier forecast had anticipated a 5% decline, but it was issued before final-quarter results were available.

S&P Global described 2023 as the lowest annual shipment volume since 2013. Its summary also said estimated annual smartphone revenue was the third-highest ever, illustrating that unit volume and market value can move differently. That annual revenue observation is not evidence that Q4 revenue rose, nor does it establish vendor profitability, which can also depend on prices, product mix, promotions and costs.

Which vendors gained or lost ground?

Apple and Samsung

Counterpoint reported Apple shipments up 2% year over year in Q4 and ranked Apple first for the quarter. It reported Samsung shipments down 9% in the same period; Samsung nevertheless retained the top position for full-year 2023 in Counterpoint’s annual ranking. Omdia separately reported 78.7 million Apple shipments in Q4 and said Apple became the largest smartphone OEM for the full year. Xiaomi, HONOR and Huawei

Counterpoint estimated Xiaomi shipments at 40.7 million in Q4, up 23% year over year. It also reported 27% growth for HONOR and triple-digit growth for Huawei in its top-10 comparison. Counterpoint associated Samsung’s competitive pressure with Apple in premium devices, Xiaomi in the midrange and Transsion brands in entry-level phones; those observations describe the competitive picture, not proof that any one factor caused the total market rebound.

Transsion brands

In the Middle East and Africa, Counterpoint reported that TECNO, a Transsion brand, grew 77% year over year and moved ahead of Samsung in the region. This regional result helps explain why a global total can strengthen even as individual vendors and established markets remain weak.

Where was the recovery strongest?

The increase was geographically uneven. Counterpoint reported Middle East and Africa shipments up 30% year over year and 9% quarter over quarter in Q4 2023, the strongest regional annual performance in its account. It cited recovering demand, easing inflation and more stable currencies as contributing conditions, and reported 60% growth in regional 5G shipments. Counterpoint MEA results

Counterpoint put Latin American Q4 shipment growth at 4.2% year over year, even though the region declined over the full year. Europe was identified by Counterpoint as the region with the highest annual decline in Q4. Thus, “global growth” did not mean that every region was expanding. Counterpoint Latin America results

What likely supported the Q4 increase?

Analysts pointed to a combination of holiday-season demand and a gradual improvement in some markets, rather than a single cause. Canalys linked the increase to stronger holiday demand and highlighted mid- and low-end devices and emerging markets. Counterpoint’s regional and vendor figures likewise show strength in parts of emerging markets and among several value- and midrange-focused brands. Canalys coverage

  • Holiday shopping and promotions can lift shipments in Q4, a season that is typically important for phone sales.
  • Consumers who delayed replacing older devices may have returned to the market, although shipment estimates alone cannot measure that replacement demand directly.
  • New product availability, including Apple’s iPhone 15 family during the holiday period, supported vendor shipments; it does not establish that launches alone drove market-wide growth.
  • Competition across lower and midrange price bands and recovering conditions in some emerging markets broadened the sources of growth.
  • Channel inventory normalization may also have affected shipments, so supply into distribution should not be treated as a direct count of completed consumer purchases.

What Q4 2023 does—and does not—show

Canalys/Omdia described Q4 as ending seven consecutive quarters of decline, while S&P Global described it as breaking a 10-quarter streak. Those descriptions should remain attributed to their respective firms; different series definitions or counting conventions may account for the difference.

  • It shows a measurable year-over-year rise in global shipments, with major estimates clustered around 7% to 9%.
  • It does not show that every buyer market, price tier or vendor grew.
  • It does not make shipments equivalent to consumer sell-through, revenue or profit.
  • It does not establish a durable recovery: one stronger, seasonally important quarter followed a weak year, and 2023 still ended smaller than 2022.

The most defensible reading is that Q4 2023 marked stabilization after a prolonged downturn. The quarter’s growth was meaningful as a break in the decline, but not enough to call the full market recovery complete.
