GivingTuesday 2026 falls on Tuesday, December 1. You can take part by donating money, but you can also volunteer, share a skill, give useful goods, advocate for a cause, help a neighbor, or show kindness. Participation is free; there is no registration requirement and no central GivingTuesday fund. Choose a cause and give directly to the organization or people you want to support.
What is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday is both an annual day encouraging generosity and a year-round movement. It began in 2012 at New York’s 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact. GivingTuesday describes itself today as an independent nonprofit and global movement. Its stated starting idea was “a day that encourages people to do good.” GivingTuesday’s U.S. history and overview explain its origins.
The U.S. event date in 2026 is Tuesday, December 1, according to GivingTuesday’s U.S. event page. Because the date changes each year, check the current event page when planning for a later year.
What can I give?
GivingTuesday’s answer is broader than money: give what you can, in a way that suits your circumstances. The organization lists kindness, time, skills, goods, advocacy, neighborly help, and financial support as ways to participate. There is no official ranking of these choices.

How can I help without donating money?
Choose an action that is specific and useful to the recipient. If you have time, ask a local organization what volunteer help it needs. If you have a skill, offer a clearly defined contribution rather than assuming what would be useful. For goods, check whether the receiving organization currently accepts the item and how it wants donations delivered. To advocate, share accurate information or take an action requested by the organization. A direct offer to help a neighbor can be just as appropriate as joining a formal campaign.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
These options are not substitutes that need to be measured against one another. The best fit depends on what you can give and what the person or organization actually needs.
How do I make a financial gift safely?
GivingTuesday does not collect donations and redistribute them among nonprofits. If you want to give money, select the organization or cause yourself and use its own donation page or another channel it identifies as official. Check the recipient and payment destination before submitting payment details; do not assume a page is legitimate solely because it mentions GivingTuesday.
Rank #3
There is no fee to participate in GivingTuesday. A donation service or fundraising platform may charge its own fees, so review the terms shown by the provider you choose and confirm how much will reach the intended organization.
What should nonprofits and community groups do?
Organizations do not need to register with GivingTuesday or use a particular fundraising platform. The GivingTuesday nonprofit and community organization toolkit says groups can use their existing donation page or choose a crowdfunding or peer-to-peer service. Tool choice is optional; consider fees, useful functions, and whether a service fits the organization’s existing workflow.
Rank #4
Choose an activation that matches the goal
Start by deciding what the organization wants people to do. A campaign might seek donations, volunteers, advocacy, donated goods, local partners, or stronger supporter engagement. Make the requested action concrete and explain how people can complete it. A fundraising campaign is only one possible approach.
Plan around capacity
Before inviting people to participate, decide who will manage responses and what the organization can deliver. Contact supporters with the plan, give ambassadors clear materials to share, and use peer-to-peer fundraising only if the organization can support it. Local collaboration and non-cash participation can broaden a campaign, while thanking supporters helps close the loop. These are planning options, not guaranteed ways to raise money.

GivingTuesday CEO Asha Curran writes in the toolkit’s sample press-release section that the movement encourages people “to embrace their power to drive progress around the causes they care about, not just on one day but throughout the year.” That year-round framing is useful for organizations that want a campaign to connect to continuing work rather than end with the date.

In its September 2025 campaign key messages, GivingTuesday reported 36.1 million U.S. participants in 2024 and more than 2 million social-media uses of #GivingTuesday. The same document said 86% of people aware of GivingTuesday said it inspired them to be more generous, that donations rose 121% in U.S. counties that ran a GivingTuesday campaign, and that 32% of participants gave in multiple ways, such as time, money, or goods. These are figures published by GivingTuesday about 2024; the campaign document does not provide enough methodological detail here to treat them as independently verified estimates. GivingTuesday’s September 2025 key messages PDF contains the figures.
