In a November 27, 2017 report, Data Center Knowledge said GDS Holdings planned a 54,000-square-foot data center for Alibaba in Hebei Province. GDS was the reported provider, Alibaba the intended customer, and the facility the first of several planned phases toward a campus. CyrusOne was connected through a separate partnership and reported investment in GDS—not as the project’s stated builder or customer.

What did GDS plan to build for Alibaba?

Yevgeniy Sverdlik reported for Data Center Knowledge on November 27, 2017, that GDS had announced a planned 54,000-square-foot data center for Alibaba in Hebei Province. The report did not name a city or give a site address.

The facility was described as the first of several construction phases at a site expected eventually to become an Alibaba data center campus. That was a forward-looking plan in the 2017 report, not confirmation that the campus was built.

What was CyrusOne’s connection to the project?

The report said GDS had recently entered a partnership with CyrusOne that included a reported $100 million investment by the U.S. company. It described CyrusOne as choosing GDS partly to help secure business with Chinese technology companies expanding in the United States.

That relationship provides business context for the announcement, but the report identifies GDS—not CyrusOne—as the provider planning the Alibaba facility. It does not say that CyrusOne financed or built the Hebei site.

Why did the announcement matter to GDS?

The 2017 article presented GDS as a major provider serving Chinese hyperscale platforms. It also said Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent accounted for 75 percent of GDS revenue, attributing the figure to the company; it did not specify the measurement period. The concentration helps explain the significance of an Alibaba project to GDS, but should not be read as a current revenue breakdown.

For market context, the article quoted Jabez Tan, then data center research director at Structure Research: “There are very few viable carrier-neutral data center providers within China,” The statement reflects the source’s 2017 characterization of the market, not a current ranking of providers.

What is known about the site today?

The November 27, 2017 report establishes the plan and its intended customer, but supplies no follow-up on construction, opening, present ownership, or operating status. It therefore cannot verify whether the first facility or the broader campus was completed. Any claim about the site’s current status would require a more recent source.
