Historical deal notice: The Galaxy S23 Ultra preorder promotion in this article was a U.S. offer from February 2023; it is no longer available. When the deal was reported on February 11, U.S. preorders were scheduled to end February 16, ahead of general availability on February 17. The package combined a storage upgrade and Samsung credit with trade-in discounts that depended on the phone you turned in.
What the Galaxy S23 Ultra preorder deal included
Samsung’s U.S. launch offer and the Samsung.com checkout promotion reported at the time were not identical in every detail. The benefits also had different conditions: the storage upgrade was a preorder incentive, Samsung credit was for eligible purchases, and trade-in savings required an eligible device.
| Benefit | What was reported | Who could use it |
|---|---|---|
| Storage upgrade | A free upgrade to the next storage tier. Contemporary coverage described the S23 Ultra offer as 512GB for the lower-tier price. | Eligible preorder configurations, subject to availability. |
| Samsung credit | Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement said up to $100; Droid Life reported up to $150 showing in the Samsung.com purchase flow. | Samsung.com buyers selecting eligible products; terms and available products could affect its use. |
| Trade-in discount | Droid Life reported up to $750 for a Galaxy Z Fold4 or up to $500 for a Galaxy S22 Ultra toward an S23 Ultra. | Buyers sending in a qualifying device that met the promotion’s eligibility and inspection requirements. |
The S23 Ultra launched in the U.S. at $1,199.99 before trade-in credits or other discounts. Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement set the preorder period as February 1–16, 2023, and described a free next-tier storage upgrade and up to $100 in Samsung credit. Droid Life’s February 11 report described up to $150 in credit in the checkout flow. The $150 figure should not be treated as a guaranteed benefit for every buyer.
When the preorder window ended
U.S. preorders ran from February 1 through February 16, 2023, with general availability beginning February 17, according to Samsung’s launch announcement and its global launch notice. The deal report appeared February 11, leaving about five days in the stated preorder period. Samsung described launch benefits as limited-time and subject to availability, so the published end date did not guarantee every configuration or promotion would remain in stock until then.

What the storage upgrade meant
Samsung’s offer was a free upgrade to the next storage tier, not a memory card or separate storage device. The S23 Ultra launched with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB options. The reported preorder configuration gave buyers the 512GB version for the price of the lower storage tier, when that offer and configuration were available. Samsung’s announcement confirms the next-tier upgrade, while the precise configurations and checkout terms could vary.
How the Samsung credit differed from cash
The credit was tied to the Samsung.com purchase path and eligible products, rather than being a cash rebate that reduced the phone price by the same amount. The contemporary report said it could be used on products such as Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch devices, tablets, TVs, vacuums, and soundbars. Actual eligibility, exclusions, expiration, and stacking depended on Samsung’s promotion terms and the products available during checkout. A buyer who did not want an eligible Samsung product might not have received the full practical value of the credit.

The reported $150 maximum conflicts with Samsung’s official launch description of up to $100. The available information does not establish that every buyer or configuration qualified for $150, so it is best understood as a checkout-specific amount reported at the time, not a universal promise.
What the trade-in amounts required
Droid Life reported the following maximum trade-in credits toward the S23 Ultra. These were not discounts available to every buyer:

| Device traded in | Reported maximum credit toward S23 Ultra |
|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold4 | Up to $750 |
| Galaxy S22 Ultra | Up to $500 |
The credit depended on the exact device and its condition. The buyer had to send the device to Samsung and meet the applicable inspection requirements; a damaged, locked, nonfunctional, or otherwise ineligible phone could jeopardize the expected value. Samsung’s current trade-in FAQ and trade-in program page describe the kinds of eligibility and inspection issues involved, but current rules should not be assumed to reproduce the February 2023 promotion’s terms. A trade-in credit also did not necessarily cover taxes, carrier obligations, financing payments, or other charges.
Why the headline value was not a guaranteed discount
Combining the largest reported trade-in credit with the reported Samsung credit makes the package look like more than $900 in value, before assigning any amount to the storage upgrade. That is a theoretical maximum, not a standard price reduction: it assumes an eligible Fold4 in qualifying condition, assumes the buyer could use the Samsung credit, and uses the $150 figure that differed from Samsung’s official $100 description. The value of the storage upgrade also depended on the price difference between configurations.

Samsung.com or a carrier?
The strongest evidence for this specific combination of incentives concerns U.S. Samsung.com purchases. Samsung’s launch announcement also said the phones would be sold through carriers and retailers, but that does not mean those channels offered the same promotion. Samsung.com’s reported advantages were the storage upgrade, Samsung credit, and instant trade-in discount; carriers or retailers could instead have offered financing, activation incentives, switching deals, or bill credits. Those offers had their own terms and should be compared against the value of an immediate trade-in discount, including any plan commitment required for carrier credits.
The package made the most sense for someone set on the S23 Ultra, with a high-value eligible trade-in and a genuine use for Samsung credit. It was less compelling for a buyer without a trade-in, one who preferred carrier incentives, or anyone unwilling to commit before seeing reviews or comparing offers. Early shipment before launch day was possible, but not guaranteed, as the contemporary deal report noted.

Regional offers were different
This was a U.S.-focused deal, not a global S23 preorder package. Samsung’s New Zealand promotion, for example, listed different voucher values and a wireless charger in its regional terms. Those benefits should not be substituted for the U.S. Samsung.com offer, and promotions could also differ by U.S. sales channel.
