Best Buy’s Geek Squad was reported to be winding down its Samsung Authorized Service Provider program in June 2024, shortly after iFixit ended its official Samsung self-repair partnership. The change narrowed two repair channels for U.S. Galaxy owners, but it did not end Samsung phone repairs. What is available now depends on your model, location, coverage and the type of damage.
What changed at Best Buy
On June 6, 2024, The Verge reported that Best Buy’s Geek Squad was ending its Samsung Authorized Service Provider (ASP) program. Participating stores had Samsung-certified technicians, training, tools and genuine Samsung parts. The report said employees had been told to prepare to return Samsung components.
The ASP program applied to participating locations, not every Best Buy store. Best Buy and Samsung acknowledged discussions about how to support customers but did not give a detailed public explanation for the program’s wind-down. A June 7, 2024 Droid Life report also noted that obligations under existing Best Buy protection plans could differ from the end of the authorized repair program. If you bought a phone or coverage from Best Buy, check your plan’s current claim process rather than assuming the repair program change cancels your benefits.
Samsung said at the time that it was discussing customer support with Best Buy and cited more than 9,000 Samsung Mobile-certified technicians in the United States offering walk-in, mail-in and “We Come to You” van service. That was Samsung’s June 2024 figure, not an independently audited current count. A listed service channel also does not guarantee that a nearby provider handles your model, has the needed part or can complete the repair the same day.

Why it was another repairability setback
On May 23, 2024, iFixit announced that it was ending its official Samsung self-repair partnership. Droid Life’s report attributed the decision to iFixit’s concerns about parts pricing and availability, limits on parts access, repair-shop contract terms and the practical difficulty of independent repairs.
Those are criticisms by iFixit, not proof that every Galaxy model is unrepairable or that all independent shops face identical terms. The Verge separately reported concerns about Samsung repair-shop contracts, including claims that shops were expected to remove non-OEM parts and report their presence to Samsung. Treat those claims as reported allegations, not as a universal rule verified for every repair.

Ending the partnership did not mean iFixit stopped supporting Galaxy repairs altogether. It retained its Samsung Galaxy repair guides and said it could continue selling OEM parts when available, while identifying non-OEM parts as such. The distinction matters: repairability is whether a device can be physically repaired; parts access is whether suitable components can be obtained; repair availability is whether a provider near you will accept the job.
Repair routes Galaxy owners can check
1. Start with warranty or existing coverage
Before paying for an out-of-pocket repair, check the phone’s warranty status and any Samsung Care+, carrier, retailer or credit-card protection that may apply. Terms differ: a claim can involve a deductible, a replacement instead of repair, limits on accidental-damage claims or exclusions. If you have Best Buy coverage, review the terms tied to your specific plan. The Verge reported historical Best Buy protection-plan deductibles of $199 or $249, depending on phone price; those figures are not a current quote or a promise about your plan. 2. Search Samsung’s service locator
Use Samsung’s U.S. service-location lookup and search by device and ZIP code. Contact a suitable provider before traveling or shipping the phone. Confirm that it accepts your exact model, performs the needed repair, has the part, explains any warranty or insurance implications, and offers the service format you need: walk-in, appointment, mail-in or mobile. Do not assume a listing means same-day service or guaranteed parts availability.
3. Check uBreakiFix by Asurion
uBreakiFix’s Samsung page is another place to check for a local repair and estimate. Availability and pricing vary by model and ZIP code. In 2023, Samsung and uBreakiFix planned to designate 50 locations as flagship Samsung repair locations. Asurion also cited a 94% same-day completion figure for walk-in repairs on Samsung flagship devices; that company-reported metric does not guarantee same-day service for every Galaxy model or store. For a Fold or Flip, ask explicitly whether the location handles your specific foldable and repair before booking.

4. Compare an independent repair quote
An independent shop may be convenient or less expensive, and may be willing to repair older models. Ask what part it will install—new OEM, aftermarket or refurbished—and what warranty the shop provides. Also ask whether the repair could affect Samsung Care+, carrier coverage, trade-in eligibility, water resistance, or functions such as biometrics, cameras and wireless charging. “Authorized” does not automatically mean inexpensive, and “independent” does not automatically mean poor quality; the part, procedure, technician and written terms matter.
5. Consider self-repair only if the job fits your skills
Samsung’s self-repair parts portal and iFixit’s guides can help experienced owners assess a supported repair. Confirm the exact model and part before ordering. Displays and batteries use adhesive and delicate connections, and opening a sealed phone can compromise water resistance unless it is correctly resealed and tested. A guide does not guarantee parts availability, calibration, successful reassembly or restored water resistance. A visibly swollen, punctured or badly damaged battery is not a routine DIY job; stop using the phone and follow the repair provider’s and carrier’s instructions for handling and shipping it.

Choose a repair route by cost, risk and coverage

There is no reliable universal price threshold for choosing repair over replacement. Compare the written repair quote with the cost of a comparable replacement, any trade-in value, remaining software-support period, applicable deductible and the importance of recovering data. A limited screen, battery or charging-port repair on a relatively new phone may make more financial sense than extensive damage; a quote approaching replacement cost on an older phone may not. Foldables need particular care in that comparison because their inner displays, hinges and specialized adhesives can make repairs more complex. Ask for an explicit quote for the exact component rather than extrapolating from a Galaxy S repair.
Questions to ask before handing over your phone
- What exact part will be installed, and is it new OEM, aftermarket or refurbished?
- What is the total cost, including diagnostic fees, taxes, shipping and any deductible?
- What repair warranty applies, and what happens if the repair does not resolve the problem?
- Will the provider test or guarantee water resistance after opening the phone?
- Is same-day completion actually available for this model and part, or only an estimate?
- Will the repair require a reset, and can the provider preserve the data?
- Could this work affect Samsung Care+, carrier insurance, warranty coverage or trade-in eligibility?
Back up important data, including photos, messages and authenticator information, before service where possible. Record the IMEI and serial number, remove payment cards and sensitive accounts when practical, and ask whether a reset is required. What the Best Buy change means for your decision
The 2024 developments reduced visible repair choices, particularly for owners seeking convenient authorized service or an official DIY parts relationship. They did not establish that Galaxy phones cannot be repaired, that every Best Buy location stopped all Galaxy-related service, or that every Samsung repair path disappeared. For a current repair, compare the actual options for your model and ZIP code, check coverage before authorizing independent work, and use the written quote—not a general claim about repairability—to decide whether repairing or replacing your phone is the better use of your money.
