From Managed Servers to Managed Cloud: Rackspace’s Pivots

Rackspace’s evolution from outsourced dedicated infrastructure to services across public, private, and hybrid cloud has unfolded in several distinct stages.

Rackspace moved from primarily supplying outsourced, dedicated IT infrastructure to helping customers migrate, operate, secure, and optimize workloads on cloud platforms and across hybrid environments. It was a multi-stage business shift—not simply a switch from servers to “the cloud”—and Rackspace’s current description of itself as an AI infrastructure provider is the company’s own positioning.

How Rackspace moved from managed hosting to cloud services

The predecessor business was founded in 1998, serving primarily small and midsized businesses with outsourced, dedicated IT infrastructure. In that model, Rackspace supplied and managed infrastructure for customers. Over time, the company increasingly offered services around customer workloads running on platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

The corporate timeline includes an initial public offering in August 2008, a leveraged buyout in November 2016, and a return to public markets in August 2020. The distinction matters: the 1998 founding refers to Rackspace’s predecessor, while Rackspace Technology as a corporate entity was formed in 2016.

2016–2020: building around customers moving to cloud

During its private-company period, management said it focused on customers migrating to cloud. Rackspace’s disclosed efforts included strengthening relationships with AWS, Google, Microsoft, and VMware; expanding professional services, managed security, and data services; building enterprise sales capacity; and expanding geographically. In August 2020, the company returned to public markets through an IPO.

2021 onward: operating cloud workloads, then reorganizing the business

In early 2021, Rackspace launched Elastic Engineering, initially covering AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and VMware, according to its 2021 CEO shareholder letter. The letter described the larger shift from mature services such as managed hosting toward higher-growth cloud offerings.

On January 1, 2023, Rackspace reorganized its reported operations into two segments: Public Cloud and Private Cloud. That structure reflects a business serving workloads on public platforms as well as private environments, rather than a clean break from infrastructure services.

What changed when Rackspace pivoted to managed cloud?

The change affected where infrastructure ran, what Rackspace sold, and how the business used capital. In the earlier model, the company’s core offer centered on dedicated infrastructure and hosting. In the newer model, it increasingly sold migration, modernization, professional services, ongoing management, security, and optimization around environments that could be owned and operated by other providers or customers.

Infrastructure and location Rackspace-operated dedicated infrastructure was central to the service. Workloads may run on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, customer facilities, or colocation; Rackspace provides services around those environments.
What Rackspace sells Dedicated infrastructure, hosting, and support. Migration, modernization, managed services, security, optimization, and professional services.
Capital and margin profile Management described legacy infrastructure offerings as higher gross margin, but also as requiring higher operating and capital expenses. Rackspace describes Public Cloud as capital-light; its segment margins are lower, associated in part with infrastructure resale.
Customer relationship Hosting and support for infrastructure supplied by Rackspace. Ongoing workload operation across public, private, and hybrid environments.

These are broad differences in emphasis, not a claim that every legacy service disappeared or that every customer moved to a public cloud. The company’s 2025 filing still describes Private Cloud and legacy OpenStack activity. It says Rackspace stopped actively marketing its legacy OpenStack Public Cloud after 2017.

What Rackspace’s Public Cloud and Private Cloud segments include

Public Cloud

Rackspace’s Public Cloud offerings center on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The company combines the underlying cloud infrastructure with its expertise and services for ongoing management, security, and optimization. Customers therefore use the cloud provider’s platform while engaging Rackspace for services around their workloads.

Private Cloud

Private Cloud includes services hosted in Rackspace facilities, customer facilities, or third-party facilities. The label describes a range of private-environment arrangements, not just servers located in Rackspace-owned data centers.

Rackspace’s 2025 Form 10-K describes the two-segment reporting structure as effective January 1, 2023. Its earlier strategy and later segment labels should not be collapsed into one event: the private-company transformation, 2021 service developments, 2023 reporting reorganization, and current AI-oriented messaging mark different stages.

What recent revenue figures do—and do not—show

Rackspace Technology’s 2025 Form 10-K reports total revenue of $2,685.7 million for 2025, $2,737.1 million for 2024, and $2,957.1 million for 2023.

Fiscal year Total revenue reported in the 2025 Form 10-K
2023 $2,957.1 million
2024 $2,737.1 million
2025 $2,685.7 million

Those figures provide recent scale and revenue context, but revenue alone does not explain why the company made its strategic changes or establish whether the pivots succeeded. The available company reporting does not provide one consistent current revenue breakdown that would support a precise comparison of legacy versus newer business.

How Rackspace describes its business today

Rackspace Technology currently describes itself as “a global enterprise AI infrastructure and solutions provider,” helping organizations operate and scale AI, cloud, and data workloads across public, private, and hybrid environments. That wording comes from the company’s About page and is corporate positioning, not an independent assessment of its market standing.

The through-line is a change in what Rackspace operates for customers and where the underlying infrastructure comes from. The company began with outsourced, dedicated IT infrastructure and broadened toward services that help customers run workloads across cloud platforms and private environments, while retaining a Private Cloud business.
