If you want a free place to start exploring careers, try the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET Interest Profiler or CareerOneStop Interest Assessment. Both help you find occupations that fit your interests; neither is a complete aptitude test or a verdict on what career you should choose.

Free career assessments to start with

O*NET Interest Profiler

The O*NET Interest Profiler is part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s career exploration tools and was developed by the National Center for O*NET Development. It uses Holland’s six RIASEC interest areas: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The O*NET Resource Center describes it as a tool family that can help people discover work activities and occupations they would like and find exciting.

The current O*NET Resource Center page offers a free online Mini-IP with 30 questions and a free printable Short Form with 60 questions. O*NET estimates completion takes about 10–20 minutes, depending on the format. Results can be linked to more than 900 occupations. These figures come from the current page, accessed in 2026; it does not state a publication year. O*NET’s March 2021 manual summarizes more than 20 years of research and covers development, reliability, validity, scoring, and occupation linkage, but the reviewed summary does not provide a single headline coefficient that would support treating the profiler as a definitive predictor.

CareerOneStop Interest Assessment

CareerOneStop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, asks about activities and work environments you prefer, then generates career ideas matched to those interests. It uses the same six broad RIASEC labels. As CareerOneStop puts it, “Career interests are the activities and work environments you prefer in a job.” Use its results to generate options, then look into the training required, actual duties, local availability, and labor-market information for each occupation.

What these assessments measure—and what they do not

The O*NET Interest Profiler measures vocational interests: the kinds of work activities that appeal to you. CareerOneStop likewise focuses on preferred activities and work environments. That is different from measuring skills, work values, or timed abilities. A test that asks what you like doing cannot by itself establish whether you have the aptitude to do a job, predict your performance, or guarantee that you will be satisfied in a particular role.

Think of an occupation match as a lead to investigate, not a recommendation to accept. A long list of jobs or a precise-sounding score does not make an assessment more reliable for your personal decision. The official sources support using these tools for interest exploration, not for a universal aptitude verdict.

How to choose between free career tests

Compare the assessment’s purpose and practical details before taking it. The O*NET options described here are 30- and 60-question formats; CareerOneStop presents an online preference assessment. Check the current pages for access and language options before you begin.

  • Construct: Is it measuring interests, skills, work values, or timed ability? Those are different questions.
  • Format and time: Check question count, estimated completion time, and whether you can use an online or printable version.
  • Language: Confirm that the assessment is offered in a language you can comfortably use.
  • Score explanation: Look for a clear explanation of what results represent, rather than relying on a score without context.
  • Useful next steps: See whether results connect to occupation profiles and information that helps you investigate training and job requirements.

How to turn a result into a career decision

  1. Take one interest assessment. Start with O*NET or CareerOneStop and answer based on what you genuinely prefer, not what you think a career ought to involve.
  2. Use the result to build a shortlist. Treat suggested occupations as possibilities to examine, not a ranking of careers you are destined to pursue.
  3. Check the day-to-day work. Read about actual duties and work environments, and consider whether they suit your preferences.
  4. Check practical requirements and opportunities. Investigate training, local job availability, and labor-market information for each promising option.
  5. Weigh your own constraints. Consider time, cost of training, location, and other personal circumstances before making a change.
