Researchers estimated that the Lorraine deposit could contain up to 46 million tonnes based on measurements that found 14% hydrogen at 1,100 metres. That is a conditional resource estimate—not a certified, recoverable reserve or a verified valuation.
What was found in France?
The prospect is in the Lorraine mining basin near Folschviller, in the Moselle department of northeastern France. During the REGALOR research project, which investigated methane in the Lorraine subsurface, researchers measured hydrogen dissolved in underground water. FDE announced in May 2023 that measurements from the Folschviller well identified dissolved hydrogen at different depths. CNRS’s July 2023 explainer describes it as a potential deposit, not a producing field.
Natural hydrogen—sometimes called white or native hydrogen—is hydrogen that occurs underground rather than being manufactured for use. Finding it in subsurface measurements is an important exploration result, but it does not by itself show how much can be extracted economically.
What does the 46-million-tonne estimate mean?
Researchers Philippe de Donato and Jacques Pironon report a concentration of 14% hydrogen at 1,100 metres. Based on those gas data, they say the Lorraine deposit could contain up to 46 million tonnes. The words “could” and “up to” matter: this is an estimate derived from measurements, not 46 million tonnes already recovered or independently certified as commercially extractable.
#1 Best Overall
A concentration is a measurement of the gas composition at a particular depth. A resource estimate extrapolates what may be present in a geological formation. A recoverable reserve requires stronger evidence about the quantity that can be produced under defined technical and economic conditions. The reported figure belongs to the second category, not the third.
Is it the world’s largest hydrogen reserve?
The available evidence does not establish that claim. The 46-million-tonne figure is a conditional estimate, and the cited sources do not show an independently assessed recoverable reserve or a like-for-like global ranking. Calling it a “reserve” without qualification turns a possible resource into a certainty that the measurements do not support.

Comparisons with other natural-hydrogen prospects would need to distinguish measured concentration and depth, in-place resource estimates, independently assessed recoverable quantities, drilling and appraisal evidence, permits, and whether production is operating or merely planned. A large estimate alone cannot settle which prospect is largest in a commercially meaningful sense.
Is the deposit worth $92 billion?
The reviewed primary and official sources do not provide a $92 billion valuation, the price assumptions behind it, or a calculation showing that this amount could be realized. The figure should therefore be treated as an unverified headline or secondary retelling, not as the value of a proven asset. Multiplying the conditional tonnage estimate by an assumed hydrogen price would not establish the deposit’s market value: the recoverable quantity, production costs, infrastructure needs, and sale terms are not established by that estimate.

Can France extract the hydrogen?
As of its answer published June 4, 2024, the French government said: “Le potentiel des ressources et leur caractère exploitable sont encore largement inconnus”—“The potential of the resources and their exploitability are still largely unknown.” It also said the estimate of 95% hydrogen at 3,000 metres remained theoretical, because the deepest wells in the area then reached only 1,000 metres. That statement describes the evidence available to the government at that time; it is not a current drilling-depth update. The government’s response to parliamentary question 10804 sets out that assessment.
There has since been a company-reported drilling update. In an announcement distributed through Euronext on June 23, 2026, FDE said its PTH-2 well reached 3,655 metres in REGALOR II. The company targets the start of natural-hydrogen production in eastern France in late 2028 or early 2029. That is a project target, not evidence that production has begun, that a commercial reserve has been certified, or that the schedule will be met. FDE’s announcement provides the company’s account.

How does the discovery fit France’s hydrogen sector?
France’s statistical service estimated national pure-hydrogen production in 2023 at 245,000 tonnes (8.2 TWh). That is existing national production and should not be confused with the estimated resource in Lorraine. The SDES figure provides sector context, not a forecast of what the Moselle prospect could produce.
Permitting activity also extends beyond Lorraine. A French government environmental information page says the first exclusive natural-hydrogen exploration permit was granted in November 2023 to TBH2 Aquitaine for an area in Pyrénées-Atlantiques, a separate region and project. The government page describes that permit. Separately, a National Assembly report says six exclusive native-hydrogen exploration permits had been awarded by March 31, 2026, including FDE’s Trois Évêchés permit, awarded January 26, 2026. These permits indicate exploration activity; they do not prove that their areas contain commercially recoverable reserves. The report gives the count and date.

What a personal-finance reader should take from the headline
The discovery is a potentially important energy prospect, but the headline does not establish a financial windfall. There is no verified $92 billion value in the cited material, and a conditional geological estimate is not equivalent to a producing asset or a proven reserve. FDE’s production schedule remains a company target, so claims about future output or proceeds should be treated accordingly.
