The FTC’s Fortnite refund claims program is closed: the deadline was July 9, 2025, and the agency is not accepting new claims. A payment of $250 or more was never guaranteed. If you already filed, the FTC’s latest program information said some claims remained under review and that additional payments were expected in 2026; check the FTC’s official Fortnite refunds page for current status.

Can you still claim a Fortnite refund?

No. The FTC deadline to submit a claim was July 9, 2025. The agency says it is not accepting new claims, so someone who did not file by that date cannot apply now through this settlement program. [FTC program page]

This program was a U.S. settlement refund distribution administered by the FTC. It is different from asking Epic Games to refund a recent or otherwise eligible purchase through its regular support process.

Who was historically eligible to apply?

The FTC’s closed program covered people who met one of these circumstances:

  • They were charged in-game currency for items they did not want between January 2017 and September 2022.
  • Their child made charges to their credit card without their knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
  • Their Fortnite account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after they complained to their credit card company about wrongful charges.

The person submitting a claim had to be at least 18. A parent or guardian had to submit a claim for someone younger than 18. These were the eligibility rules for the now-closed program, not a way to qualify for a new claim today. [FTC program page]

How much was the Fortnite refund?

There was no guaranteed $250 payment. The FTC says an approved payment depends on multiple factors, including how many people filed claims. The amount in the headline was not an official promised award to each claimant. [FTC program page]

The widely reported settlement figures refer to different things:

Figure What it means
$245 million The 2022 FTC refund fund for Epic customers, to be distributed by the FTC at its discretion. Epic said it resolved concerns about Fortnite item-shop and refund-system designs. [Epic Games statement, Dec. 19, 2022]
$275 million A separate 2022 FTC settlement amount related to children’s privacy, not an additional consumer refund fund. [Epic Games statement, Dec. 19, 2022]
969,173 payments totaling more than $126 million A payment round announced by the FTC in June 2025 for U.S. Fortnite players who had filed a valid claim by February 14, 2025. It was not the final per-person amount and does not establish that every claimant was paid. [FTC, June 2025]
More than 37 million people notified The FTC’s 2023 estimate of people it would notify as potentially eligible, not a count of approved claimants. [FTC, 2023]

The $245 million fund and $275 million privacy-related amount together explain the $520 million settlement figure Epic announced; the full $520 million was not a consumer refund pool.

When will people who filed get paid?

On the FTC’s program page marked July 2025, the agency said people who filed after February 14, 2025 did not need to take further action while their claims were under review. It expected additional payments in 2026 after reviewing and validating claims. The page says it will be updated when more information is available, so claimants should rely on that page for current timing rather than treating the expected date as a guarantee. [FTC program page]

During the claim process, people selected a payment method and, if approved, receive that type. FTC instructions say a check must be cashed within 90 days, while a PayPal payment must be accepted within 30 days. For questions, the FTC lists the refund administrator at 1-833-915-0880. Confirm current instructions on the FTC page before acting. [FTC program page]

Is the FTC settlement refund the same as an Epic purchase refund?

No. The FTC settlement distribution concerns claims under the closed government program. For an ordinary purchase problem, Epic’s support page separates Fortnite Item Shop purchases, purchases inside developer-made islands, Epic Games Store purchases, and Fab Marketplace purchases; not every purchase is refundable. Use the relevant category in Epic’s support options for a current purchase issue, rather than trying to file a new FTC settlement claim.

What did the settlement concern?

The FTC says Epic agreed to settle allegations that it unlawfully charged players for unwanted purchases, allowed children to incur unauthorized charges without parental permission, and blocked some users who disputed wrongful charges from accessing purchased content. The FTC says the settlement requires positive consent before charging users and bars locking players out for disputing unauthorized charges. These are the FTC’s stated allegations and settlement terms, not a court finding that every allegation was proven. [FTC program page]

In its Dec. 19, 2022 company statement, Epic said: “Games should go above and beyond to make sure players even more clearly understand when they are making a purchase with real money or with virtual currencies to prevent accidental purchases.” Epic also said it had introduced hold-to-purchase confirmation, instant cancellations, self-service refunds, and an updated chargeback policy. Those descriptions reflect Epic’s statement at the time; consult Epic’s support pages for current purchase rules. [Epic Games, Dec. 19, 2022]

How to avoid Fortnite refund scams

The FTC says it will never ask someone to pay a fee to file a Fortnite refund claim. It also will not demand money, threaten people, tell them to transfer money, or promise them a prize. Use the official FTC program page and the administrator contact listed there; do not pay a third party to submit a claim. [FTC consumer advice]
