Former Apple Engineer Sentenced to 120 Days for Stealing Project Titan Trade Secrets

Former Apple hardware engineer Xiaolang Zhang pleaded guilty to stealing restricted technical material from Apple’s autonomous-vehicle program, known internally as Project Titan. In February 2024, a federal judge sentenced him to 120 days in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay $146,984 in restitution. Reporting identifies that payment as restitution—not clearly as a separate criminal fine.

The case involved specific engineering documents and equipment, including a 25-page circuit-board schematic, rather than a publicly established complete blueprint for an “Apple Car.”

Who was Xiaolang Zhang?

Zhang was an Apple hardware engineer who joined the company in 2015 and worked on circuitry used to process or analyze sensor data for autonomous-driving systems. His work was connected to Project Titan, Apple’s highly confidential vehicle initiative, whose objectives changed over time.

The public record supports a case involving selected trade-secret materials. It does not establish that Zhang stole a finished vehicle design, all of Project Titan’s source code, or a production-ready autonomous-driving system.

What material did prosecutors say he took?

Public descriptions identify a collection of restricted engineering information and physical equipment:

  • A confidential 25-page document containing detailed schematic drawings for a circuit board intended for an autonomous vehicle.
  • Technical manuals relating to an Apple prototype.
  • Circuit boards.
  • A Linux server associated with the research.
  • Confidential files copied or transferred to personal devices.

The U.S. Department of Justice said the schematic was available only to a limited part of Apple’s workforce. A historical case account put access at approximately 2,700 of Apple’s roughly 135,000 employees at the time; that figure describes the 2018 case, not Apple’s current security organization. The DOJ’s Intellectual Property report and a case summary of sentencing documents describe the documents and hardware.

How Apple’s investigation unfolded

  1. Leave and travel: Zhang took parental leave and traveled to China.
  2. Planned resignation: He later told Apple he intended to resign and return to China. Reporting connected him with a prospective job at XMotors, commonly known as Xiaopeng Motors or XPeng, an electric-vehicle and autonomous-driving company.
  3. Forensic review: Apple’s New Product Security Team investigated activity surrounding his departure. According to the DOJ account, Apple terminated his access and reviewed his devices and network activity.
  4. Airport arrest: Zhang was arrested at San Jose International Airport in July 2018 while attempting to board a flight to China.

The available sources establish the employment context and attempted departure. They do not establish that XPeng, another employer, or a government directed the theft or knowingly received every item.

The criminal case and confirmed timeline

Date What happened
July 2018 Zhang was arrested at San Jose International Airport and accused of taking Apple autonomous-vehicle trade secrets.
2018 A federal indictment charged him with theft of a trade secret.
August 2022 He pleaded guilty rather than going to trial. The plea exposed him to a statutory maximum of up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to sentencing coverage of the plea.
February 2024 A federal judge imposed 120 days in prison, three years of supervised release and $146,984 in restitution.

Because Zhang pleaded guilty, there was no trial verdict deciding the facts after a contested jury case. His plea was the basis for the conviction.

Was he fined $146,984?

That wording is imprecise. The February 2024 sentencing report describes the $146,984 payment as restitution. Restitution is intended to compensate a victim for documented loss; a criminal fine is a separate punitive monetary penalty. Unless the sentencing judgment independently confirms a separate fine, the precise description is that Zhang was ordered to pay $146,984 in restitution. The sentencing report is the source for the reported amount and terms.

Why was the sentence 120 days instead of 10 years?

Ten years was the statutory maximum cited when Zhang entered his plea, not an automatic sentence. The available public reporting confirms the 120-day term and restitution order but does not provide a complete explanation of the judge’s reasoning. It would be speculative to attribute the result to cooperation, limited damage, a lack of prior convictions or any particular sentencing factor without the underlying sentencing filings.

What the case proves—and what it does not

Established by the public record

  • Zhang admitted criminal responsibility by pleading guilty to theft of trade-secret information.
  • The material was tied to Apple’s autonomous-vehicle research and included a circuit-board schematic, manuals, files and hardware.
  • Apple’s security team investigated activity around his departure, and he was arrested before leaving the United States.
  • The court imposed a 120-day prison sentence, three years of supervised release and a reported $146,984 restitution order.

Not established by the cited sources

  • That Zhang took a complete “self-driving-car plan” or a finished Apple vehicle blueprint.
  • That XPeng or another Chinese employer commissioned the conduct or knowingly received all of the material.
  • That a Chinese government agency directed the theft.
  • That Apple’s vehicle program was ready for commercial release, or that its later status proves the effect of Zhang’s conduct.

The charge described in the DOJ material is theft of a trade secret. Calling it “economic espionage” would require support from the specific indictment or judgment and should not be treated as a synonym.

Why circuit-board information matters

A circuit-board schematic can specify how sensors, processors, power systems and communications components are connected in a prototype. In an autonomous-driving project, that information may reveal engineering choices and integration work even if it is only one subsystem. Its value does not mean it is the complete design of a vehicle.

Separate Project Titan prosecutions

Zhang’s case should not be merged with the separate prosecution of former Apple employee Weibao Wang. The Justice Department’s Wang filing concerns a different defendant and allegations: DOJ court document. A separate case is not evidence that Wang’s conduct formed part of Zhang’s sentence.

What technology companies can learn

The case illustrates why companies protecting trade secrets commonly combine technical controls with carefully managed departures:

  • Limit sensitive project access to employees who need it.
  • Review downloads, copying and removable-media activity when an employee resigns.
  • Revoke credentials promptly and preserve company devices for forensic analysis.
  • Investigate unusual access patterns without assuming that a planned overseas move, by itself, proves unlawful conduct.
  • Document losses separately from any criminal penalty so restitution and fines are not confused.

Bottom line on the headline

The accurate summary is narrower than “a former Apple employee was fined for stealing the Apple Car.” Xiaolang Zhang, a former Apple hardware engineer, pleaded guilty to taking confidential Project Titan materials. He was sentenced in February 2024 to 120 days in federal prison and three years of supervised release, with a reported $146,984 restitution order. The public record describes specific technical documents and equipment—not a complete autonomous vehicle—and does not establish that a Chinese company or government directed the theft.
