Ford did not announce that the Lightning name was dead. Executives were reportedly considering ending the F-150 Lightning in November 2025. On December 15, Ford confirmed that production of the current-generation, battery-electric F-150 Lightning had concluded, while announcing plans for a next-generation Lightning using an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) system.
What happened to the F-150 Lightning?
On November 6, 2025, TechCrunch reported—citing The Wall Street Journal—that Ford executives had discussed ending the F-150 Lightning. The report followed an October production pause as Ford prioritized gasoline and hybrid F-150 output after a fire at aluminum supplier Novelis’ Oswego, New York, plant. At that stage, the story described internal discussions, not a public cancellation decision.
Ford’s formal announcement came on December 15, 2025. The company said production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning had concluded and that affected workers would be redeployed to the Dearborn Truck Plant to support another gas and hybrid F-150 crew.
That announcement did not abandon the Lightning brand. Ford said a next-generation Lightning was planned with an EREV architecture and assembly at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan.

| Performance claim | Specifications vary by model year and configuration | Ford said it would retain sub-five-second acceleration and electric power delivery |
The successor’s range and performance figures are Ford estimates and statements about a future product. They should not be treated as tested results or proof that the vehicle is currently available to buy.
Why did Ford change course?
Ford said lower-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes had weakened the business case for some larger electric vehicles. The company described the move as a broader “customer-driven shift” toward a mix of gasoline vehicles, hybrids, EREVs, fully electric vehicles and smaller affordable EVs.

Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said the strategy was intended to make the company “stronger, more resilient and more profitable.” Ford also said it would redirect capital toward Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids and battery energy storage.
These are Ford’s stated reasons and strategy claims, not independent measurements of demand or profitability.

What Ford’s financial figures mean
- 700-plus miles: Ford’s estimated range for the planned next-generation Lightning EREV. It is not an independently verified test result.
- 50% of global volume by 2030: Ford projected that hybrids, EREVs and fully electric vehicles together would represent about half of its global volume, compared with 17% in 2025.
- About $19.5 billion in special items: Ford announced this estimate in connection with its broader EV and product-plan changes. The company said most would be recorded in the fourth quarter, with cash effects extending into 2026 and 2027.
Those figures describe Ford’s projections and accounting estimates. They do not establish the purchase price, operating cost, tax treatment or delivery date of a future Lightning EREV.
What the announcement means for buyers and owners
If you want a new battery-electric F-150
The current-generation Lightning is no longer in production according to Ford’s December 15 announcement. Buyers therefore need to distinguish remaining dealer inventory or used trucks from a continuing production model. Inventory, pricing and eligibility for any incentive depend on the vehicle, seller, location and applicable rules; none of those details were established by Ford’s roadmap announcement.

If you already own a Lightning
Ending production does not by itself mean that warranty coverage, service or replacement parts have ended. Owners should use Ford’s current warranty terms and service channels for vehicle-specific answers. Ford’s announcement concerned production and workforce allocation, not an immediate withdrawal of support.
If you are considering waiting for the successor
Ford has announced the EREV architecture and a range estimate, but the cited announcement did not establish a firm retail launch date, final specifications, pricing or ordering process. Reuters previously reported a delay of a full-size electric pickup from 2027 to 2028, but that report predates Ford’s December roadmap and should not be treated as the definitive schedule for the announced EREV successor.

Does this mean Ford is abandoning electric pickups?
No. Ford ended current-generation Lightning production and changed the planned successor’s architecture, but it also reaffirmed a next-generation Lightning plan. The distinction is important: the battery-electric truck that was being built has ended, while the future EREV truck remains a stated plan rather than a vehicle confirmed as on sale.
What to verify before making a financial decision
- Confirm whether a specific truck is new old-stock, used or part of a later production run.
- Check the vehicle identification number, model year, warranty status and service history.
- Ask Ford or the selling dealer for current parts and service information for the exact vehicle.
- Do not budget around the 700-plus-mile figure until Ford publishes final specifications and an independently verifiable test cycle.
- Before waiting for the successor, confirm its launch date, price, charging or fueling details, tax treatment and towing specifications from a current official Ford source.
