Rules below reflect official information available on October 3, 2026. Confirm your exact itinerary and current requirements with the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, the authorized visa application center and your airline before departure.
First decide whether you are visiting China or only transiting
A Beijing connection does not by itself make a traveler eligible for visa-free transit. The relevant questions are your passport type, destination after China, length of stay, whether you need to leave the airport or port, and whether your route meets the applicable transit rules.

Can a Pakistani passport holder use the 24-hour transit exemption?
Potentially, but only for genuine onward transit—not a short visit to Beijing. The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan’s 2025 notice describes foreign nationals transiting by international flight, ship or train to a third country or region, with valid international travel documents and confirmed connecting tickets, whose stay does not exceed 24 hours and who remain within the corresponding port.

If you intend to leave the port, you must apply to border inspection for a temporary entry permit. The exemption does not guarantee approval to enter the city. Verify the exact route and connection with your airline and the relevant immigration authority. The National Immigration Administration’s page explains general transit mechanics, but Beijing’s current page should be used for its regional policy duration and eligible nationalities: National Immigration Administration transit information.
Why the 240-hour Beijing transit policy does not cover Pakistan
Beijing’s municipal government currently describes a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit arrangement across Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei for nationals of 57 listed countries. Pakistan is not on that list. The page names Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport as designated ports, but using either airport does not make an otherwise ineligible nationality eligible.

For those who do hold a listed nationality, the page sets out conditions including a valid passport, any visa required for the onward third country or region, a completed arrival/departure card, and an onward ticket with a confirmed seat. Eligible travelers should inform their airline, apply for a transit stay permit at immigration, and follow the permitted regional itinerary. The policy is not a general visa waiver for a Beijing stopover.
The Beijing page’s URL and title still say “144hour,” and an older National Immigration Administration interpretation describes the regional arrangement as 144 hours. The current text on Beijing’s page states 240 hours and lists 57 nationalities; confirm the rules for your actual itinerary with the airline and immigration before departure.

Pakistani diplomatic and official passport exemptions
The embassy’s April 2025 notice says Pakistani diplomatic and official passport holders may stay in mainland China and Hong Kong SAR for up to 30 days under the published exemption. Its Macau provision applies to diplomatic passport holders for up to 14 days. These are distinct allowances for specified passport categories, not exemptions for ordinary Pakistani passports. Check the notice’s conditions against the passport you will actually travel on.
How to apply for a Chinese visa in Pakistan
- Choose the correct visa category. Your documents depend on why you are travelling. Business and exchange applications, for example, may require invitation materials; requirements for one category should not be treated as a universal checklist.
- Complete the online application. The embassy directs applicants to complete the COVA visa application form and upload a digital ID photo, then print the form and confirmation page and sign them.
- Prepare the baseline documents. The embassy’s published instructions call for a passport valid for more than six months with at least one blank visa page, a copy of the passport information page, the printed and signed COVA form and confirmation page, and a digital ID photo. Pakistani applicants must also provide copies of both sides of their national ID card. Check the embassy’s current category-specific list for additional evidence.
- Use the correct application center. Submit through Gerry’s Chinese Visa Application Service Center according to your permanent-residence consular district. The embassy lists intake locations in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi; it says Lahore consular work is handled by the Embassy in Islamabad for Punjab residents other than Rawalpindi. Confirm the current center location and district routing before filing.
- Allow time for processing. The embassy says it generally needs four working days after the application center forwards the file. That is an estimate, not an end-to-end guarantee: supplementation, interviews or other case factors may extend processing, and the embassy says fast service is unavailable.
Check whether a published financial-document rule applies to you
The embassy’s 2024 instructions specify a latest six-month personal bank statement showing US$100 per day or equivalent Pakistani rupees for certain F- and M-visa circumstances when the listed invitation letter is unavailable. This is a circumstance-specific requirement, not a universal financial threshold for every visa or a general tourist-visa rule. Follow the checklist for your own category and circumstances.

Preflight checklist
- Identify whether you are travelling on an ordinary, diplomatic or official Pakistani passport, and whether your purpose is a visit or onward transit.
- If entering Beijing for a visit on an ordinary Pakistani passport, obtain the appropriate Chinese visa before travel and assemble the documents for that visa category.
- If relying on transit, check your nationality’s eligibility, onward destination and any required destination visa, confirmed ticket, connection time, port, permitted itinerary and whether you need to leave the port.
- Check passport validity, blank visa-page availability, application-center routing by permanent residence, the current document checklist and processing timing.
- Ask your airline to verify boarding-document requirements for your specific route. Boarding and entry decisions are not guaranteed by the published guidance; immigration authorities retain control over admission and temporary entry permits.
