Flextronics opened its Flextronics Technology Center in Guadalajara, Mexico, in December 2002. The facility added product-analysis and electronics-testing services to the company’s existing local manufacturing operations, including test characterization, in-circuit testing and X-ray laminography.
What the Guadalajara technology center did
The center was designed to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) analyze and characterize products as they moved toward production. Its work included:
- Test characterization: evaluating product behavior and test requirements.
- In-circuit test: checking electronic assemblies for faults.
- X-ray laminography: inspecting internal structures of electronic assemblies using X-ray imaging.
These services extended beyond manufacturing alone: Flextronics was adding analysis and test capabilities alongside its production services.
Why Flextronics added product-analysis services
The company presented the center as a way to integrate product analysis and characterization with its existing offerings, helping customers accelerate new-product introductions. Flextronics COO Mike McNamara said the combined services were intended to address customer demand for faster product launches. The contemporaneous EE Times report and EDN report were published on December 10, 2002.

The reports place the opening in a wider competitive setting: electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers were expanding what they offered in Mexico while OEMs were also considering lower-cost Asian manufacturing, particularly in China. The Guadalajara center represented a service-layer investment around Flextronics’ Mexican manufacturing presence, not merely a new factory announcement.
What is—and is not—known about the opening
The two contemporaneous reports identify the location, service types and business rationale, but do not state an attributable investment amount, staffing level, floor area or test capacity for the 2002 center. A separate Flex announcement in 2022 described a 145,000-square-foot automotive facility expansion in Jalisco; that later project is not a measure of the 2002 technology center. Flex’s 2022 announcement concerns that subsequent expansion.

How the 2002 opening fits Flex’s Mexico footprint today
Flex’s current Mexico careers page describes innovation, design, engineering, manufacturing and supply-chain services across locations including Guadalajara, Juárez, Tijuana, Aguascalientes and San Luis Río Colorado. Its global-locations page identifies Guadalajara North as a Customer Experience Center and lists other Mexican sites. These current pages describe the present footprint, not the company’s locations at the time of the 2002 opening.
