Lawgix acquired Fixed on June 15, 2016, in a transaction reported as a purchase of the startup’s technology rather than its employees. The deal followed Fixed’s shift from automated parking-ticket challenges to traffic-ticket analysis and attorney referrals, after municipal systems disrupted its original workflow. The price was not disclosed, and public accounts do not establish a complete post-acquisition product history.
What Fixed originally did
Fixed began as a consumer app for parking tickets. A user photographed the citation, and the service reviewed it for common errors. It could request additional evidence—such as photographs of signs or the location where the ticket was issued—then generate a contest letter for submission to the relevant city. Users could also use the service to pay legitimate tickets.
Y Combinator described Fixed as an iPhone app that charged nothing when a user lost and took a success-based fee when the user won. Its company profile reported a fee of 25% of the fine, while Bloomberg Law described a 35% fee during another period. Contemporary coverage also used the 25% figure, so pricing changed over time rather than following one universal rate.

Why the parking-ticket model became difficult to scale
Fixed depended on city websites, fax systems, payment credentials and administrative procedures that it did not control. TechCrunch reported that the company was blocked or had access disrupted in San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles by October 2015. Problems included blocked IP addresses or payment credentials and cities disabling or bypassing fax-based submissions. Working around those obstacles consumed engineering resources.
That is different from a formal legal prohibition: the reporting supports “blocked” or “disrupted,” not a court-ordered ban. Fixed stopped its parking-ticket business in important markets and concentrated on traffic citations instead.
The pivot to traffic citations
Traffic tickets created a larger and more legally consequential problem than many parking fines. A moving violation can add points to a driver’s record, increase insurance costs and affect a license or employment. Fixed analyzed the likely financial effect of a citation and connected users with traffic attorneys.

At the time of the acquisition, TechCrunch reported that Fixed worked with about 20 attorneys in 12 states and processed roughly 500 tickets per week. Lawgix planned to expand the service to 17 states. That was a planned reach, not proof that every ticket type or county was actually covered.

What the reported success numbers mean

These outcomes should not be read as a promise that Fixed “won” 90% of cases. Point removal, fine reduction, dismissal and favorable adjustment are different results, and traffic-law outcomes depend on the jurisdiction, violation, driver history and court.
Why a law firm was a logical buyer
TechCrunch described Lawgix as a multistate law firm that also operated technology systems for litigation work, including court dates and case outcomes. Fixed supplied the consumer-facing intake layer: customer acquisition, ticket analysis and onboarding. Lawgix supplied licensed legal services, attorney relationships and back-office case processing.

The strategic fit can be summarized this way:
- Fixed: a mobile workflow that collected citation details and evidence.
- Lawgix: lawyers, jurisdictional coverage and litigation infrastructure.
- Combined model: software-led intake feeding a licensed legal-services operation.
The acquisition was reportedly for the technology, not the talent. Financial terms were undisclosed, founder David Hegarty declined to comment on the deal terms, and there is no evidence that this was an acqui-hire or that the founders joined Lawgix.

The legal-regulation problem behind the deal

Fixed used disclaimers saying it was not a law firm and that its information was not legal advice. TechCrunch reported complaints to a bar association after the company moved into traffic citations. Putting the service inside a law-firm organization could provide a clearer basis for attorney representation, but it did not automatically make every feature lawful in every state. Rules governing fee arrangements, advertising, referrals and nonlawyer participation vary by jurisdiction.

Funding and the path to the transaction
TechCrunch reported $1.8 million in cumulative seed funding. That total reflects more than one financing event: a $1.2 million round reported in July 2014 and an additional $650,000 reported in February 2015. Investors named in coverage included Mark Cuban, Slow Ventures, Structure VC, Paul Buchheit and Nas.

Y Combinator currently lists Fixed as inactive. That supports saying the original startup is no longer active in its former standalone form, but it does not identify the date operations ended, the duration of Lawgix’s product, or what technology and customer records were transferred.
In September 2023, Redemption Law announced that it acquired the FixedLaw.com domain, which had formerly hosted a ticket-challenging app. A domain purchase is not proof that Redemption Law acquired Fixed’s corporate entity, software, personnel or customer data. Nor does the current Australian site at lawgix.com.au establish continuity with the U.S. multistate Lawgix described in the 2016 report.

Public accounts therefore do not support a disclosed purchase price, a verified post-acquisition performance history or a continuous ownership chain from Fixed to later Fixed-branded domains.
What the Fixed story teaches legal-tech companies
Fixed’s chronology matters more than the acquisition headline:
- It automated parking-ticket challenges through a consumer app.
- Municipal systems blocked or disrupted the submission workflow in major markets.
- The company shifted toward traffic citations and attorney referrals.
- Lawgix acquired the technology to connect consumer intake with a law firm’s licensed and administrative infrastructure.
The lesson is not that software cannot help with legal problems. It is that distribution, regulation and jurisdiction can be as decisive as product engineering. A parking-ticket workflow must accommodate local procedures and government systems; a traffic-ticket service may need licensed representation; and a standalone platform can face both access restrictions and unauthorized-practice concerns. Embedding the technology inside a legal-services organization offered a more natural operating model, even though it did not eliminate state-by-state legal obligations.
