Fiverr told staff to upskill in AI—then cut about 250 jobs in its “AI-first” restructuring

Fiverr linked approximately 250 job cuts to an AI-first restructuring, but the evidence does not show that AI directly replaced 30% of its employees. The strategy combines fewer layers, employee upskilling and a shift toward higher-value freelance work.

Fiverr announced on September 15, 2025 that it would become an “AI-first company” and eliminate approximately 250 team positions. Contemporary coverage described the reduction as about 30% of staff, but 30% was not Fiverr’s primary official figure. The company said it was building a smaller, flatter organization, rebuilding infrastructure around AI, raising productivity and investing in both employee upskilling and AI-native hiring.

The episode is more complicated than “AI replaced 30% of Fiverr’s workers.” Fiverr tied the layoffs to a broad transformation involving organizational design, cost discipline and a marketplace shift away from low-value transactional work. Its later strategy suggests a future in which AI handles some routine tasks while people provide specialized judgment, quality control, workflow management and accountability.

What Fiverr announced

Founder and CEO Micha Kaufman announced the restructuring on September 15, 2025. Fiverr’s company update and regulatory filing described several connected changes:

  • Approximately 250 team members would leave the company.
  • The organization would become smaller and flatter, with fewer management layers.
  • Fiverr would operate in a more focused “startup mode” and seek higher productivity per employee.
  • The company would rebuild its infrastructure around AI rather than simply add AI features to its existing systems.
  • Fiverr would invest in upskilling current employees while recruiting AI-native talent.

Fiverr’s CEO communication is available in the company’s company update; the related SEC filing and Form 6-K provide the formal disclosure.

What “30%” means—and what it does not

The defensible description is that Fiverr announced approximately 250 job cuts, which contemporary reporting characterized as about 30% of its workforce. The Register used the approximate percentage; Fiverr’s official filing used the approximate headcount.

Those figures are not necessarily interchangeable. Workforce totals can differ by reporting date, geography, employee classification and whether contractors or temporary workers are counted. Saying Fiverr “eliminated exactly 30% of its workforce” implies a precision the official announcement does not establish.

Measure What the sources establish
Official reduction Approximately 250 team members
Common media characterization About 30% of staff
Direct proof that AI performed every eliminated role Not established

Did AI cause the layoffs?

Fiverr explicitly presented the reduction as part of an AI-focused transformation intended to make the business leaner and more efficient. That establishes a connection between the restructuring and the AI strategy, but it does not prove that an AI system directly replaced each person whose job disappeared.

Three explanations can coexist:

  • Internal redesign: fewer management layers and new infrastructure may require different roles and workflows.
  • Cost and productivity pressure: management expected more output from a smaller workforce and redirected investment toward AI.
  • Marketplace economics: Fiverr’s customers increasingly have access to tools that can perform some basic, repeatable tasks without buying a conventional freelance gig.

Fiverr’s later communications describe AI as absorbing some high-volume, low-value transactional work while increasing demand for complex projects. That is a business transition, not a quantified finding that AI alone caused the 250 departures.

The upskilling contradiction

Fiverr said it would invest in upskilling existing employees and recruit AI-native talent. That is different from promising that every employee who learned AI would keep a job. Training can make retained employees more productive while the organization still removes roles, combines teams or changes its skill requirements.

The precise timing and wording of any separate message telling staff to “upskill in AI” is not independently established by the company filings available here. The verified corporate commitment is to upskill existing staff as part of the transformation.

For employees, “learn AI” can therefore mean three different things:

  • a genuine opportunity to move into higher-value work;
  • a new performance expectation for the same job;
  • a signal that roles lacking a clear AI-enabled future may be redesigned or eliminated.

Upskilling is useful career advice, but it is not job protection.

What “AI-first” meant operationally

In Fiverr’s announcement, “AI-first” referred to how the company would build and run the marketplace, not to becoming a developer of frontier AI models. The practical components were:

Infrastructure built around AI

Fiverr said it would modernize and re-architect its technology so AI could be integrated into products and internal operations from the foundation.

A flatter operating model

Reducing management layers was intended to shorten decision paths and increase individual productivity. That can speed execution, but it can also remove institutional knowledge and place more responsibility on remaining staff.

New skills and talent mix

The plan combined training for current employees with recruitment of people already experienced in AI-native workflows.

A different marketplace mix

Fiverr’s later strategy emphasized higher-value, longer-duration work rather than dependence on one-off, highly commoditized transactions.

Why Fiverr’s marketplace was under pressure

Fiverr is both an employer using AI internally and a marketplace exposed to AI-driven changes in customer demand. A buyer who once ordered a basic text, image, translation or data task may now use a general-purpose AI tool. That can reduce demand for some entry-level services.

At the same time, businesses still need people to define problems, verify outputs, integrate systems, manage projects and accept responsibility for results. Fiverr’s strategy is to capture more of that complex work through offerings such as Managed Services and Dynamic Matching.

The financial pressure was visible in the company’s later results. Fiverr reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $97.8 million, down 10% year over year from $108.6 million, and said rapid AI adoption was accelerating the move away from lower-value transactional work. What the strategy means for remaining employees

Employees who remain may be expected to supervise AI outputs, automate recurring processes, work across functions and deliver more with fewer handoffs. The valuable skills are not limited to prompt writing. They include:

  • breaking complex work into verifiable tasks;
  • checking facts, calculations and generated content;
  • handling confidential data safely;
  • managing AI-assisted workflows;
  • understanding copyright, privacy and security risks;
  • being accountable for the final client outcome.

The risks are equally practical. A smaller organization can lose experienced people, overload those who remain and degrade support, trust and safety or quality-control functions. AI-generated work can create rework and reputational costs if review responsibilities are unclear.

What it means for freelancers and buyers

Fiverr’s direction puts pressure on services that are easy to describe, compare and generate at low cost. Freelancers are more defensible when they combine AI tools with capabilities that are difficult to commoditize:

  • specialized domain knowledge;
  • creative direction and editing;
  • fact-checking and quality assurance;
  • workflow and systems integration;
  • project management and communication;
  • clear accountability for business results.

For buyers, an AI-assisted freelancer is not automatically interchangeable with an unreviewed AI output. The relevant questions are who verifies the work, what data the process can access, how revisions are handled and who is responsible if the result is wrong.

How Fiverr’s strategy evolved after the announcement

Fiverr’s fourth-quarter 2025 communication highlighted product innovation, platform re-architecture and an AI-native future. Its 2026 messaging described the transformation as multi-quarter and linked it to higher-value work, cost discipline and continued marketplace development. The company’s Q4 2025 results and shareholder filing provide that context.

Those updates show an ongoing strategy rather than a completed conversion. The available evidence does not establish that the layoffs produced faster releases, permanently higher margins, better employee morale or durable marketplace growth.

What remains unknown

  • Which departments accounted for the approximately 250 positions.
  • How much of the reduction funded AI investment versus general margin improvement.
  • Whether employees received formal training, redeployment or severance beyond what was publicly disclosed.
  • Which internal tasks were automated rather than merely reorganized.
  • Whether customer growth, repeat purchasing and enterprise demand improved as the strategy matured.
  • Whether freelancers ultimately gained more high-value work than they lost to AI substitutes.

Without those measures, “AI-first” remains a strategic direction and management objective, not proof of a completed business transformation.

The broader lesson for AI-led restructuring

Fiverr’s case illustrates why headline percentages can obscure the real mechanism of change. AI transformation can involve investment in people and fewer people at the same time. A company may train retained workers, hire specialists, remove layers and eliminate roles whose work is no longer central to its strategy.

The meaningful test is not whether management uses the phrase “AI-first.” It is whether the company can show what work was eliminated, what work was created, how productivity is measured, whether quality and accountability were preserved and whether customers value the resulting product.
