Five Most Interesting Things for Data Center Pros in Box’s 2014 Pre-IPO Filing

Box’s 2014 pre-IPO filing linked data-center capacity to margins and growth. Here are five notable infrastructure details, with the dates and limits of each claim explained.

Box’s 2014 pre-IPO disclosures present a cloud-storage company balancing two competing infrastructure risks: commit too much data-center capacity and margins suffer, or commit too little and growth, service quality and customer acquisition are constrained. The filing-era model combined commercial colocation, Box-owned equipment, redundant systems, a separate disaster-recovery site and a distributed network intended to improve uploads. The figures below describe the business reported in 2014, not Box’s current infrastructure.

1. Capacity planning was both a margin risk and a growth risk

Box told investors that capacity had to be secured before demand was certain. Excess capacity would leave the company paying for infrastructure it did not yet need, reducing operating margins. Insufficient capacity could prevent Box from serving existing customers, limit new customer acquisition and impair revenue growth.

“If we overestimate the demand for our cloud-based storage service and therefore secure excess data center capacity, our operating margins could be reduced. If we underestimate our data center capacity requirements, we may not be able to service the expanding needs of new and existing customers and may be required to limit new customer acquisition, which would impair our revenue growth.”

That trade-off is more than a facilities issue. It ties capital efficiency directly to sales capacity and service obligations.

Planning outcome Financial effect Service and commercial effect
Overbuilding Unused capacity can reduce operating margins. Provides headroom, but ties up capital before demand arrives.
Underbuilding Avoids some near-term spending. Can constrain service for growing customers and force limits on new customer acquisition.

The quotation is from Box’s SEC filing as reproduced by Data Center Knowledge in July 2014.

2. Box used commercial colocation instead of owning data-center facilities

The filing-era arrangement separated the physical facility from the hardware and operations. Box relied on colocation providers to expand geographically, while owning or leasing the servers, networking and storage equipment installed in those facilities. Box employees managed that equipment.

Reported footprint

  • Two primary data centers in Northern California.
  • One disaster-recovery site in Las Vegas.
  • 3.6 megawatts of total capacity across the three sites.

Data Center Knowledge identified Equinix as Box’s primary provider and also mentioned a contract with Switch Communications. The article suggested that Switch may have been associated with disaster recovery, but that association was not confirmed; it should not be treated as an established role.

  • Ventilation:Vented shelves increases ventilation efficiency and heat dissipation to protect equipments long-term use
  • Installation:Equipped with a complete set of accessories, and it is easy to install, with instruction or video for reference

Why the model mattered

Colocation offered a way to add locations and power without building and operating entire facilities. Box still controlled the systems that delivered the service, but the provider relationship affected available space, power and geographic expansion. Owning a facility could provide more direct control over the site, while requiring greater upfront capital and a longer expansion cycle.

3. Availability combined a contractual target with layered redundancy

Box reported a 99.90% uptime service-level agreement and an average monthly uptime of 99.93% for the 12 months ending January 2014. These figures are not interchangeable: the first was a contractual target, while the second was a historical average reported in the company’s filing-era coverage.

Design elements described in the filing-era account

  • Redundant network connections.
  • Clustered servers.
  • High-availability server pairs.
  • Replication to a separate disaster-recovery site.

Those measures addressed different failure modes. Redundant networking could reduce the effect of a connection failure; clustered systems and high-availability pairs could keep workloads running when individual components failed; replication supported recovery if a primary site suffered a major incident. The reported uptime does not establish a current performance level or an independently measured benchmark.

4. An accelerator network was designed to improve uploads

Box’s network strategy extended beyond its primary facilities. The account described Box using Equinix locations and, where Equinix had no facility, Amazon Web Services points of presence. Box’s routing technology selected paths for uploads so traffic could enter the network closer to users.

Data Center Knowledge reported that Neustar validated an average upload speed 2.7 times that of the closest competitor across locations. The article did not name that competitor, and the figure was a 2014 validation as reported by the article—not a current or independently replicated benchmark.

For data-center professionals, the architectural point is the use of distributed ingress locations and path selection to reduce the distance between a customer and the cloud service’s network. The performance claim must remain bounded by its date, source and unnamed comparison.

5. Schneider Electric showed how large an enterprise deployment could become

Schneider Electric, a data-center equipment company, was itself a major Box customer. Data Center Knowledge reported nearly 70,000 Schneider users and more than 20.2 terabytes stored, compared with an initial deployment for 2,000 users in 2012.

Measure Reported figure Period or qualification
Initial Schneider deployment 2,000 users 2012
Schneider users Nearly 70,000 Figure reported in the 2014 article
Schneider data stored More than 20.2 TB Figure reported in the 2014 article

The example illustrates adoption across a very large organization and the operational scale a cloud-storage customer could reach. It does not describe Schneider’s present deployment.

What the SEC filing says about scale and financial pressure

Box’s Form S-1/A reported more than 32 million registered users and more than 44,000 paying organizations as of October 31, 2014. Its largest deployment exceeded 97,000 users at that date.

The same filing reported $124.2 million in revenue for the year ended January 31, 2014, alongside a net loss of $168.6 million. Those figures help explain why capacity utilization and infrastructure commitments mattered financially: the company was pursuing rapid expansion while operating at a substantial loss.

For a data-center reader, the filing’s central lesson is that infrastructure decisions were inseparable from the economics of a fast-growing subscription business. Facilities, power and hardware had to be available early enough to support demand, but idle capacity directly threatened margins.

How to read these 2014 infrastructure claims today

  • Historical scope: The footprint, provider relationships, uptime figures, network comparison and customer counts describe the filing-era business in 2014.
  • Source distinction: Data Center Knowledge supplied the five-point interpretation and reported performance and customer details; Box’s Form S-1/A is the primary source for the company’s disclosed user, organization, revenue and loss figures.
  • Unconfirmed detail: Switch Communications’ specific disaster-recovery role was suggested, not established.
  • Benchmark limitation: The 2.7-times upload comparison has an unnamed competitor and should not be generalized to current service performance.
  • Availability limitation: A 99.90% SLA states a contractual commitment; 99.93% was a reported average for a defined historical period.
