A fire broke out in a parking lot at Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois, on Saturday night, August 24, 2024. Rivian said vehicles were damaged, but the assembly plant itself was reported unaffected and no injuries were reported. The cause was undetermined in contemporaneous accounts.
What happened in the Rivian factory fire?
The Normal Fire Department received a report of a fire at 9:43 p.m. Central Time on August 24, 2024, according to The Verge’s contemporaneous report. The fire was in a parking lot at Rivian’s Normal plant—not inside the assembly plant.
Rivian spokesperson Peebles Squire said, “We are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a number of vehicles in a parking lot at our Normal plant late Saturday night.” The statement confirmed vehicle damage and an investigation, but did not give a count or identify the vehicles.
Was the assembly plant damaged, and were there injuries?
The Normal Fire Department said the assembly plant was unaffected. Its spokesperson, Matt Swaney, told The Verge: “There were no injuries to firefighters or Rivian personnel.” The contemporaneous reports therefore described damage to vehicles in the lot, not damage to the factory building or disruption to the assembly plant.

How many Rivian vehicles were damaged?
Rivian did not confirm the number or type of vehicles affected in the contemporaneous coverage. Reuters, in a report carried by Investing.com on August 25, 2024, noted that the company had not confirmed either detail.
InsideEVs reported on August 26, 2024, that more than 50 R1S and R1T vehicles were damaged. That was a secondary estimate based on unofficial imagery and reports; Rivian did not confirm the count or model identification. It should not be treated as an official tally.

Was the cause of the fire determined?
Not in the accounts published at the time. Swaney said Rivian and its insurer were leading the investigation, with town fire officials assisting as needed. He described it as “a very intricate and complex investigation” and said there was no timeline for determining whether an origin or cause would be established.
That describes the status reported in August 2024; it does not establish whether a later finding was made. The contemporaneous accounts did not identify the cause, and they do not support a claim that a vehicle battery caused the fire.

Was this the same as an earlier Rivian factory fire?
No. The Town of Normal’s fire department recorded a separate incident in October 2021: a small fire in a battery sub-assembly area. The department said then that the plant building and assembly process were unaffected. That incident was nearly three years earlier and was not the August 2024 parking-lot fire.
Rivian’s June 2024 R1T emergency response guide is technical safety material for responders. Its discussion of high-voltage battery hazards does not establish that batteries were involved in the 2024 parking-lot fire.
