FCI created a dedicated fiber-optics division to develop cable assemblies, passive optical components and active devices such as transceivers. The move expanded the connector maker’s business beyond copper interconnects and built on its earlier acquisitions and optical-backplane work, according to contemporaneous coverage by EE Times and EDN.
What the new division was intended to make
EE Times reported that FCI’s division would focus on three broad categories: fiber-optic cable assemblies, passive products and active devices, including transceivers. That scope joined components that guide or divide optical signals with assembled cable connections and powered equipment that sends or receives them.
Passive optical components
A related FCI/Canstar product announcement listed couplers, splitters, taps, wavelength-division multiplexers (WDMs) and adaptors among the company’s fiber-optic products. These names describe different ways of connecting, dividing, tapping or combining optical paths; they are not interchangeable product types.
Cable assemblies and transceivers
A fiber-optic cable assembly combines optical cable with fitted connection hardware for linking equipment or components. A transceiver is an active device that transmits and receives signals, rather than a passive connection component. The division’s announced remit covered both kinds of offering, although the historical reports do not provide a current catalog or model-level specifications.

Why FCI expanded into fiber
Contemporaneous EDN coverage connected FCI’s move to rising network speeds and the growing interest in optical backplanes. FCI was developing optical-backplane technology to complement its established copper-interconnect business. The report quoted FCI’s Pawel Pokrzywa saying, “Most of our new I/Os are fiber optic connectors.”
Fiber offered a route to higher bandwidth in applications where copper interconnects were under pressure. The period coverage also described optical backplanes as a way to reduce system size and the number of backplane layers. Those demands gave an established connector supplier a reason to develop optical products alongside its copper offerings.

How the acquisitions fit the strategy
Canstar Optical Coupler
According to an FCI/Canstar announcement, FCI Canada acquired Canstar Optical Coupler from Alcatel Canada in June 1997. The announcement described continued development of fiber-optic products and technology, and listed the passive components and accessories noted above. It quoted FCI product manager Mark Jarman on combining Canstar’s technology with FCI’s design expertise.
Berg Electronics
EE Times reported that FCI entered the fiber-optic cable-assembly business by acquiring Berg Electronics in 1998; EDN also connected Berg to FCI’s expansion. The acquisition is therefore tied in the coverage to entry into cable assemblies, while the later division’s stated scope was broader, encompassing passive products and active devices as well.

What the historical market estimates do—and do not—show
EE Times cited an estimate of 300,000 optical backplanes shipped in the preceding year and reported analyst Fleck’s projections of a $9.8 billion optical-backplane industry in five years and up to $25 billion in ten years. These were forecasts reported around 2000, not present-day shipment or market-size figures, and they should be read as evidence of the expectations driving investment at the time rather than as current market data.

The available historical coverage establishes the division’s announced purpose and product scope, but does not establish the present-day legal ownership or operating status of that exact FCI division. A similarly named Taiwan company, FOCI Fiber Optic Communications, Inc., is a separate entity and should not be confused with FCI in these historical reports.
