A fake online casino may display convincing games or even show an early win, then block withdrawals and demand a supposed tax or fee. Don’t send more money to unlock winnings. Check the operator and exact website address with the gambling regulator responsible for your location and the specific service, and contact your bank promptly if you have already paid.

How fake online casinos operate

Scamwatch in Australia describes fake casino-style games, sometimes called “scambling,” that can show players early wins before suspending an account. The operator may then demand fake fees or taxes to release the displayed winnings, request identity documents or banking details, and stop responding. A balance or win shown on a screen is not proof that money can be withdrawn. Scamwatch explains the pattern and safety steps.

Warning signs to take seriously

These are indicators to investigate, not proof that any single site is fraudulent. A combination of pressure, payment demands and unverifiable licensing deserves particular caution.

  • Guaranteed wins, easy-money claims, sign-up credits, or unsolicited approaches through social media, messaging apps or ads.
  • Repeated requests for small payments, or a demand for a fee or tax before you can withdraw.
  • Payment instructions with an unusual description or transfers to a recipient that does not clearly match the operator.
  • Unclear information about who owns or operates the service, or support that becomes vague or disappears when you ask to withdraw.
  • Rewards for recruiting other players.
  • A polished website, app or set of positive reviews offered as the main evidence that the casino is legitimate. Scamwatch cautions that appearance and reviews do not establish legitimacy.

Some indicators depend on local rules. Ukraine’s PlayCity, for example, identifies claims of a licence from another jurisdiction such as Curaçao or Anjouan, crypto deposits or transfers to personal bank cards, a domain outside .ua, and betting without identity verification as possible signs of an illegal site in the Ukrainian oversight context. These are not universal tests of fraud. See PlayCity’s official site.

How to check whether an online casino is licensed

There is no single register that establishes whether a casino may legally serve players everywhere. First identify your location and the precise service—casino games and sports wagering may fall under different permissions—then verify the operator directly with the regulator responsible for that service.

  1. Find the regulator independently. Type the regulator’s official address yourself or use a trusted government site. Do not rely only on a badge, licence image or link supplied by the casino.
  2. Search the official register. Look up the operator’s legal or trading name and the exact domain you intend to use.
  3. Compare the details. Check that the domain and business match, the licence is current, and the permitted activity covers the service being offered.
  4. Pause if anything is missing or inconsistent. Do not deposit while the listing, domain, status or permitted activity remains unclear. Contact the regulator using details published on its own site.
Location and official route What to verify or know
United Kingdom — Gambling Commission public register Check the business, exact domain, trading names, current status and permission for the activity offered. The register includes activity permissions, regulatory actions and address information. UK Gambling Commission public register.
Australia — ACMA licensed interactive gambling providers register ACMA says an online wagering service must appear on this register to operate in Australia. It accepts complaints about providers absent from the register and certain prohibited conduct by licensed providers; for other complaints about licensed providers, ACMA directs consumers to the licensing authority. ACMA guidance and register.
Philippines — PAGCOR Guarantee On 18 June 2025, PAGCOR announced a regularly updated list of licensed internet gaming platforms under its oversight. The announcement describes the initiative, but does not itself establish a particular platform’s current listing. Check the live list and details directly with PAGCOR. PAGCOR’s announcement.

These routes are examples, not interchangeable approvals. A register for one country or one type of gambling does not establish that a casino is licensed for your location and service. Even a matching listing is not a guarantee that an operator is risk-free.

What to do if you paid or shared information

  1. Stop sending money. Do not pay a supposed tax, verification charge, withdrawal fee or “unlock” payment. Do not pay a separate service that promises to recover losses.
  2. Contact your bank or card provider immediately. Report the suspected scam and ask whether it can stop, reverse or otherwise address the transaction. The options depend on how you paid and the timing.
  3. Secure affected accounts. Change passwords for accounts that may be exposed, especially if you reused a password. Follow your bank’s advice if banking details were shared.
  4. Keep evidence. Save transaction records, messages, account names and the site’s exact URL for your bank and relevant regulator.
  5. Get local identity and reporting help. Use the reporting and identity-support services for your jurisdiction. Australia-specific legal caution

Scamwatch says online pokies and online casino-style games are illegal in Australia and do not have the consumer protections of services operating within Australian law. That statement is specific to Australia; gambling laws and licensing rules differ elsewhere. Check the rules and regulator for your own location and the service involved.
