Evolution Mining said it discovered a ransomware attack affecting its IT systems on 8 August 2024 and disclosed it to the ASX on 12 August. The company said the incident was contained and reported no material impact on production or operations. Its public disclosures do not identify the attacker, confirm data theft or disclose a ransom payment.

What happened, and when?

Evolution Mining’s 12 August 2024 announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) said the company had become aware of a ransomware attack on 8 August. The dates describe different events: 8 August was the reported discovery date; 12 August was the public disclosure date.

In that announcement, Evolution said that, based on work completed to that point, it believed the incident was contained. It also said it had reported the attack to the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

Date or period What Evolution reported
8 August 2024 The company became aware of a ransomware attack affecting its IT systems, according to its 12 August ASX announcement.
12 August 2024 Evolution publicly disclosed the incident, said it believed it was contained, and said it did not anticipate a material impact on operations.
FY2024 reporting The company’s FY2024 annual report said the incident was contained by 12 August, Trigger Action Response Plans were executed, and operations were managed safely with no material impact to production.
FY2025 reporting Evolution’s FY2025 annual report said the attack took several days to contain and described subsequent cyber-security and resilience measures.

Did the attack stop gold production?

Evolution reported no material impact to production. Its FY2024 annual report said operations were managed safely while Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) were executed. The 12 August ASX announcement likewise said the company did not anticipate a material impact on operations.

That is not the same as a statement that every system or activity was unaffected. The incident affected IT systems and took several days to contain, according to the FY2025 annual report. The public disclosures do not specify which systems or mine sites were affected, or quantify any financial cost. Evolution describes itself as a gold miner operating six mines in Australia and Canada, but its incident disclosures do not map the attack to individual sites.

Who carried out the attack, and was data stolen?

Evolution’s public disclosures do not name a ransomware family or attacker, confirm whether data was accessed or exfiltrated, or state whether the company paid a ransom. Contemporary reporting also noted that those details had not been made public. The company’s statement that it believed the incident was contained describes its response status; it does not, by itself, establish whether data had been accessed or stolen.

There is also no public figure in the cited company disclosures for a ransom demand, payment, recovery expense or other financial loss. The reported absence of a material production impact should not be treated as proof that the incident had no costs.

What changed after the incident?

Evolution’s FY2025 annual report describes several measures aimed at improving cyber resilience. The company said it engaged Australia’s largest dedicated cyber-security services firm, developed a formal Cyber Incident Management Plan (CIMP), reviewed disaster-recovery scenarios and testing, and moved to a managed 24/7 Security Operations Centre (SOC) for monitoring, triage and escalation.

The company also reported FY2025 mandatory cyber-awareness training compliance of 90.4%, against a 90% target. That figure is a training-compliance measure for FY2025, not a measure of how many systems were secure or whether another attack could be prevented.

These disclosed changes show that the incident led to work on response planning, recovery readiness, monitoring and staff training. The reports do not provide enough detail to assess the technical scope of the attack or independently measure how effective each control is.

What can investors and readers conclude?

The clearest supported conclusion is limited but useful: ransomware affected Evolution Mining’s IT systems, the company reported no material impact on production or operations, and it disclosed a multi-day containment effort followed by resilience measures. Public disclosures leave the attacker’s identity, any data theft, ransom payment, affected sites and financial cost unresolved. Those unknowns matter: containment and continuity reporting are not evidence that no information was compromised.
