WooPayments is an optional, integrated payment service for WooCommerce. It lets eligible businesses accept cards, wallets, selected local methods and buy-now-pay-later payments, then manage transactions, refunds, disputes and payouts from WordPress. Its main advantage is native WooCommerce administration; its main limitation is that availability, pricing and payment-method support vary by merchant country, customer payment origin, currency and account eligibility.
WooPayments is not WooCommerce itself, a standalone store platform or the only way to accept payments. It is one gateway among many.
What WooPayments is—and is not
WooCommerce is the ecommerce platform that runs your catalog, cart and checkout. WooPayments is a payment gateway and processing service used inside that platform. During onboarding, Stripe is the payments partner involved in verification and processing, but WooPayments and a directly configured Stripe account are not automatically identical products.
WooPayments is also different from WooPay. WooPay is a customer-facing accelerated checkout option; WooPayments is the merchant payment service that processes eligible methods and provides the administration area. You still need WordPress hosting, WooCommerce and a properly configured store.

Who can use WooPayments?
Eligibility is based primarily on where the business is legally registered, not simply where its owner lives. The supported-country list includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, the UAE and numerous European countries. Check the current country and territory list before opening an account.
- U.S. businesses must be in one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C. or Puerto Rico; other U.S. territories are not currently supported.
- The account holder must be at least 18.
- Your site needs HTTPS/SSL and recent, compatible WordPress, PHP and WooCommerce versions.
- You must provide business, identity and bank-account information for verification.
- Select the legal business country carefully: the country chosen during signup cannot normally be changed later through the standard flow.
A supported merchant country does not mean every customer, currency or payment method is supported. Those are separate eligibility decisions.
Payment methods
Cards
Eligible stores can accept credit and debit cards, save payment methods for returning customers where supported, and use 3-D Secure or other authentication when required.

Wallets and express checkout
The startup documentation identifies WooPay, Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link by Stripe. Display depends on the merchant account, customer device and browser, wallet eligibility, currency, product type and checkout implementation.
Local payment methods
The U.S. fee table lists methods including Bancontact, EPS, iDEAL/Wero, Multibanco, Przelewy24, SEPA, WeChat Pay and Alipay. A method may require a particular customer country or currency and is not necessarily enabled automatically. Verify the live options in Payments settings and the current fee table.
Buy now, pay later
The U.S. table lists Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna. Their rates are materially higher than standard cards, so BNPL can improve payment flexibility while reducing margin on low-priced or low-margin products.
In-person payments
Card-reader and other in-person charges are separate from ordinary online-card pricing. Do not use the online rate to forecast point-of-sale costs.

WooPayments fees and realistic examples
WooPayments has no setup fee or monthly online-payment subscription according to its current documentation. That does not mean payments are free: processing, cross-border, conversion, method-specific, dispute and applicable tax charges still apply. Rates outside the United States differ.
| U.S. example or charge | Current official signal |
|---|---|
| Standard online cards | 2.90% + $0.30 |
| International-payment surcharge | Additional 1.50% where applicable |
| Currency-conversion surcharge | Additional 1.00% where applicable |
| Card dispute | $15; returned if you challenge and win, according to the fee documentation |
| Affirm | 6.00% + $0.30 |
| Afterpay | 6.00% + $0.30 |
| Klarna | 5.99% + $0.30 |
| SEPA | 0.80% + $0.30, capped at $6.00 |
| Refund | Original transaction fees are not returned |
The international surcharge is tied to the origin of the customer’s payment method, not merely the shipping address. A conversion charge can apply when the payment currency differs from a bank-account currency used for payout. VAT, GST or similar taxes may also apply depending on jurisdiction. Check the official fees page for your country.
Illustrative U.S. calculations
| Order scenario | Illustrative fee | Amount after processing fee |
|---|---|---|
| $100 domestic card | $3.20 (2.90% + $0.30) | $96.80 |
| $100 international card | $4.70 (2.90% + 1.50% + $0.30) | $95.30 |
| $100 international card requiring conversion | $5.70 (2.90% + 1.50% + 1.00% + $0.30) | $94.30 |
| $20 domestic card | $0.88 (2.90% + $0.30) | $19.12 |
| $100 Affirm order | $6.30 | $93.70 |
| $100 SEPA order | $1.10 | $98.90 |
These are examples, not quotes for every merchant. A refund does not restore the original processing fee, and a dispute can add the $15 fee while funds are being contested.
Payouts, balances and cash flow
- The customer submits a payment.
- The payment is authorized or declined.
- An authorized amount enters your WooPayments balance, less applicable fees.
- WooPayments pays the available balance to your linked bank account according to the configured schedule.
You can configure payout frequency in the Payments settings. Standard timing, instant-payout availability and any instant-payout charge depend on country and account eligibility; weekends and bank holidays can delay arrival. First payouts may be held while verification completes. Incorrect bank details, compliance reviews, reserves, refunds or disputes can also delay or reduce a payout.

- The Clover Compact and Clover Mini /Station sync with each other through the Clover Dashboard and cloud-based network. This allows you to manage transactions, track sales, and access business data across both devices seamlessly. Plug in, not battery/mobile. Requires New Processing account through Powering POS. (US, PR, USVI). CANNOT be used with a different Processor. Rate match guarantee. Contact us for questions
Refunds or disputes can make the balance negative. WooPayments may need to recover that amount from future sales or other debits. Bank-account changes can trigger additional review. As of July 2026, the fee documentation says merchants can access a detailed ledger of fee-related account activity for a selected period; report and export features may still depend on account availability.
Refunds and disputes
Refunds
Use the refund action in WooCommerce order administration for a full or partial refund. The processor refund and the customer’s bank posting are separate events, so a customer may not see the credit immediately. A merchant refund does not prevent every dispute—for example, a cardholder may already have opened a case or may not recognize the transaction.
Chargebacks
A dispute begins with the customer’s bank or card issuer. Respond through the WooPayments dashboard before the stated deadline. Useful evidence can include the order record, product description, customer messages, delivery confirmation, usage logs, refund policy and proof of service. Submit relevant, consistent evidence rather than a large unrelated file set. The current fee documentation says the dispute fee is automatically returned if you challenge and win.
- Use a recognizable statement descriptor and publish contact and refund details.
- Keep fulfillment, delivery and customer-service records.
- Cancel recurring billing promptly when a customer requests it.
- Do not assume a WooCommerce order status alone proves that a processor refund completed.
Fraud controls
WooPayments offers configurable fraud-protection settings and risk rules. WooCommerce recommends starting with the Basic risk level for most stores. Adjust rules for your actual countries, products, average order values and fulfillment model. Stronger blocking can reduce some carding and suspicious-order activity, but aggressive rules also create false declines and lost legitimate sales. Fraud controls reduce risk; they cannot guarantee approval or eliminate chargebacks.

Multi-currency and international selling
Keep these concepts separate:
- Store currency: the accounting currency configured for the catalog.
- Display and payment currency: what a customer sees and uses at checkout.
- Settlement currency: the currency in which funds are paid to a bank account.
- Conversion: exchange-rate handling when payment and settlement currencies differ.
WooCommerce describes WooPayments as supporting more than 100 currencies on one page and over 130 on another. Treat those as broad product descriptions, not a universal promise: the precise list depends on country, account, payment method and whether a currency is supported for display, checkout or settlement. Conversion fees, rounding, changed exchange rates on refunds and payment-method restrictions can affect your margin. Test target-country checkout before advertising local-currency prices.
Subscriptions and recurring payments
WooCommerce Subscriptions supports automatic and manual recurring-payment models, but gateway compatibility varies by feature and payment method. Before launch, verify new subscription checkout, automatic renewals, saved methods, failed-renewal handling, card updates, trials, sign-up fees, upgrades, downgrades, resubscriptions, payment-method switching and authentication requirements. The official compatibility matrix is Subscriptions Payment Methods & Gateways. Never describe WooPayments simply as “subscription compatible” without checking the exact renewal scenario you need.
How to install WooPayments
Prepare first
- Confirm that the legal business country is supported.
- Use HTTPS and current WordPress, PHP and WooCommerce versions.
- Gather legal business, personal identity and bank information.
- Have a WordPress.com account available for the connection step.
Normal dashboard path
- Open WooCommerce > Payments or WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
- Select the option to accept payments with Woo and click Install.
- Activate the plugin if WordPress requests it.
- Choose Complete setup and select initial payment methods.
- Connect the WordPress.com account.
- Choose Start accepting payments for live processing or Test payments for a test account.
- Enter business information and complete the Stripe-hosted verification.
- Return to WordPress and confirm account status.
- Configure payment methods, payouts, fraud protection, statement details and checkout settings.
Labels can vary by plugin version. If WooPayments is missing, check whether the business location is unsupported or the recommendation was previously hidden. Otherwise go to Plugins > Add Plugin, search for “WooPayments,” install the WooCommerce-developed plugin, activate it and run onboarding. The startup guide contains the current path.
How to test without charging real customers
Do not test by placing a real live-mode order and refunding yourself. WooPayments states that processing fees from those transactions are not refunded.
- Go to Payments > Settings.
- Enable test mode, confirm the dialog and save.
- Use the official test-card numbers, not real cards.
- Test a successful payment, a decline and authentication-required behavior where relevant.
- Test full and partial refunds, order-status changes and customer emails.
- Check express checkout, currency display and payment-method visibility on mobile and desktop.
- Disable test mode before accepting real orders.
Test orders remain WooCommerce orders and are marked as test orders. Indicators also appear in order notes and emails. You can delete test orders through WooCommerce > Status > Tools, but transaction records under Payments > Transactions are not deleted by that operation. Follow the testing documentation.
WooPayments compared with alternatives
| Decision factor | WooPayments | What to compare elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Integration | Native WooCommerce workflow for payments, refunds, disputes and payouts | Plugin quality, checkout compatibility and reporting in Stripe, PayPal, Square, Mollie or another gateway |
| Pricing | No setup or monthly online-payment fee; variable processing and surcharges | Country-specific rates, fixed fees, conversion, disputes and negotiated pricing |
| International sales | Multi-currency and selected local methods | Required countries, currencies, local methods and settlement controls |
| Subscriptions | Must be checked feature by feature with WooCommerce Subscriptions | Automatic renewals, retries, saved methods and customer self-service |
| Physical retail | Online-first administration with separate in-person conditions | Square and other point-of-sale ecosystems, hardware and inventory synchronization |
| Account model | WooCommerce dashboard with Stripe-linked onboarding and verification | Who controls the processor account, reserves, payout timing and dispute workflow |
Stripe may suit merchants wanting its direct ecosystem; PayPal matters where customers expect its wallet; Square is relevant to online-plus-retail operators; Mollie is often considered by European merchants needing regional methods; Authorize.net can fit traditional gateway or merchant-account arrangements; Amazon Pay can add an Amazon-wallet option. Compare current terms directly rather than assuming one provider is cheapest.
Advantages, limitations and a pre-launch decision
- Strong fit: a WooCommerce store in a supported country that wants one dashboard for cards, wallets, local methods, refunds, disputes, payouts and selected multi-currency tools.
- Potentially poor fit: an unsupported country or industry, specialized settlement requirements, unusually high international or BNPL volume, a required method that is unavailable, or a gateway-specific subscription or reporting feature.
- Before launch, confirm: legal country and verification, average order value, international share, currencies and settlement accounts, required wallets and local methods, subscription renewal behavior, payout timing, refund cash requirements, dispute evidence processes, fraud rules, checkout compatibility and successful test-mode results.
For hosting and other store costs, see WooCommerce pricing. WooPayments can simplify payment operations, but it should be chosen because its country coverage, methods, economics and cash-flow controls fit your business—not because “no monthly fee” sounds like free processing.
