In 2026, Google’s tools can interpret natural-language requests, compare products, summarize review themes, preview apparel, track a target price, and—when a retailer supports it—help complete checkout through Google Pay. The important qualification is availability: some features are live for eligible users, while others are rolling out, limited to certain merchants or countries, or still announced.
For shoppers, these tools are best treated as research and convenience features, not guarantees of fit, inventory, lowest delivered price, compatibility, or seller quality. For retailers, accurate feeds, current inventory, structured product data and checkout integrations are becoming as important as conventional Shopping visibility.

What Google’s “new AI tools” include
The changes span three layers: consumer shopping features, merchant tools and the infrastructure connecting retailers to Google’s AI surfaces.
| Feature | Primary user | What it does | Availability and main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Mode and Gemini shopping | Consumers | Natural-language research, comparisons, visual inspiration, review themes, price and inventory details | Market- and account-dependent; answers do not guarantee complete market coverage |
| Virtual Try-On | Consumers | Generates an apparel visualization from a user image | Eligible listings and users only; an approximation, not a fit or sizing guarantee |
| Price tracking | Consumers | Monitors a product variant and target price | Notifications and eligible products vary; an alert does not reserve inventory |
| Agentic checkout | Consumers and participating retailers | Uses Google Pay to help complete an eligible purchase after confirmation | Not universal; retailer eligibility, country and user confirmation apply |
| Universal Cart | Consumers and participating retailers | Combines products across merchants and Google services, with price, restock and compatibility assistance | U.S. rollout across Search and Gemini was announced for summer 2026; YouTube and Gmail were to follow |
| Merchant Center AI tools | Retailers and marketers | AI visibility insights, conversational attributes, Product Studio and Ask Advisor | Some are market- or account-limited; Ask Advisor was announced as coming soon |
| UCP and AP2 | Retailers, platforms and payment providers | Commerce and payment protocols for agent access, authorization and auditability | Integration and country support are required; practical adoption is still developing |
These features depend on Google’s Shopping Graph and merchant-supplied feeds, prices, inventory, reviews and integrations. Google said the Shopping Graph contained more than 60 billion product listings in its May 2026 Universal Cart announcement, compared with more than 50 billion in a November 2025 announcement; those are Google’s figures, not an independent audit. Google’s Universal Cart announcement and its agentic-checkout announcement provide the relevant context.

How AI Mode shopping works
- Open Google Search and enter a request in ordinary language.
- Switch to AI Mode when that option is available on your account.
- State constraints such as budget, size, color, use case, delivery deadline, compatibility, brand or material.
- Ask follow-up questions to narrow the shortlist instead of restarting the search.
- Open the underlying product and retailer links to inspect specifications, reviews, inventory, shipping and returns.
- Before paying, verify the exact variant, seller, final delivered price and return terms on the merchant’s page.
Useful prompts include:
- “Compare quiet cordless vacuums under $300 for a two-bedroom apartment with mostly hardwood floors.”
- “Find a waterproof women’s hiking jacket under $180, available in medium, with free returns.”
- “Which of these monitors works with a MacBook Pro over USB-C and has a height-adjustable stand?”
- “Show running shoes with a wide toe box, separating product specifications from review opinions.”
AI Mode can organize a complicated request, summarize attributes and surface review themes. It cannot reliably enforce every constraint as a hard filter, prove that it found every relevant product, or guarantee that a displayed price includes shipping, tax, membership requirements or coupons. Google describes shopping research and agentic Search expansion in its 2026 Search update and earlier AI Mode shopping update.
Virtual Try-On: a visual preview, not a fitting room
For eligible apparel listings, Google can use a user-provided image and product imagery to generate a visualization of how an item might look. In the United States, Google says some users can use a selfie with its Nano Banana image model to create a fuller-body representation. Google characterizes the result as a style or “vibe” check, not a precise simulation.
- Find an eligible apparel listing in Search or Google Shopping.
- Select Try-On when it appears.
- Upload an image or use the supported selfie flow.
- Review the generated image, then return to the listing for actual sizes, colors, price, shipping and returns.
Google’s consumer help page says the feature requires a Google account with Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations turned on. Country, device, login status, product category and listing eligibility can affect access: Google’s Try-On instructions.
- The image may change body shape, facial details, garment construction, texture, proportions or color.
- It does not establish that a particular size will fit or provide a promised level of support, warmth, stretch or protection.
- The merchant controls available sizes and inventory.
- Google says generated images may be evaluated through feedback and trained human reviewers, so uploading a personal image involves Google’s applicable data practices.
Merchant eligibility information is also described at Google Merchant Center Help, with the Nano Banana update at Google’s product blog.

Price tracking and agentic checkout
Price tracking
Google’s announced flow lets you select a product, variant, size, color and target price. Google can notify you when the tracked item reaches that target: agentic-checkout announcement. An alert is not a price guarantee or reservation. The item may sell out, the variant may change, shipping or tax may alter the total, or a retailer may impose a purchase limit.
Agentic checkout
For eligible merchants, Google says Google Pay can help complete a purchase after the user confirms the item and shipping details. This is permission-based, not unrestricted autonomous buying. The initial U.S. rollout included Wayfair, Chewy, Quince and selected Shopify merchants. Later announcements named selected checkout experiences across brands including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and selected Shopify merchants.
Google says the brand remains the merchant of record even when checkout uses Google Pay. The retailer’s return policy therefore controls returns; Google’s payment framework does not turn Google into the seller or override those terms.
Universal Cart and cross-service shopping
Universal Cart is Google’s announced cross-merchant cart for Search and Gemini, with YouTube and Gmail planned to follow. It is designed to combine products from multiple retailers and monitor:

- Google Pay checkout when a supported brand participates
If Google checkout is unavailable, the cart can hand the shopper to the retailer’s own site. Google announced a U.S. summer 2026 rollout across Search and the Gemini app; that announcement does not establish that every account or device had access by August 18, 2026. Check your own account rather than assuming universal availability: Universal Cart details.
For a custom PC, for example, a compatibility warning could be useful, but it is not a substitute for checking socket type, power requirements, dimensions, firmware support and the retailer’s return policy.
What the AI can get wrong
- Stale inventory: a feed or Shopping Graph entry may show stock that disappears before checkout.
- Variant confusion: an answer may discuss one color, storage capacity, generation, bundle or size while linking to another. Match the exact SKU or model number.
- Compatibility errors: verify manufacturer specifications for electronics, appliances, replacement parts and PC components.
- Review-summary bias: recurring phrases can overshadow less frequent but serious complaints. Read recent and negative reviews and check verified-purchase indicators where available.
- Final-price mismatch: shipping, tax, subscriptions, coupons and membership rules may change the delivered cost.
- Commercial prioritization: paid Shopping ads, merchant participation, availability and AI selection can interact. Do not assume recommendations are purely editorial or neutral.
For expensive, safety-critical, medical, child-safety or protective products, treat the AI response as a starting point. Confirm seller identity, warranty, return policy, model number, included accessories, delivery date and the product’s authoritative specifications.

Keep the catalog reliable
AI systems are only as useful as the data they receive. Maintain accurate price, availability, brand, GTIN or other identifiers, variants, size, color, material, category, images, shipping and returns information. Fresh inventory and pricing updates reduce wrong-variant and checkout failures.

Merchant Center AI features
Google announced AI performance insights for Merchant Center, including a comparison of a brand’s visibility or “share of voice” on AI surfaces against similar brands, with rollout in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States. Google has not established in the cited announcement how surfaces, periods, competitors, paid visibility or exports are calculated, so merchants should treat the metric as a Google report rather than an independently defined ranking.
Conversational attributes are intended to help retailers adapt product descriptions to conversational search globally. They do not replace accurate structured data. Product Studio can generate or adapt imagery, but generated backgrounds and edits must not imply a different color, dimension, material, feature or included accessory: Merchant Center and Product Studio guidance.
Ask Advisor was announced as a forthcoming Merchant Center collaborator that could provide business-specific insights and connect with Google Ads and Google Analytics. Treat access as rollout-dependent, not universal: Google Marketing Live shopping updates.
Prepare for agent access and checkout
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is Google’s described open commerce language for connecting retailers and AI agents. Its optional capabilities include catalog access for variants, inventory and pricing; cart operations; and identity linking for loyalty or member benefits. Retailers choose which capabilities to adopt: UCP updates.
Best Value
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards. Good for use on the US Google Play Store only. Terms apply - see below.
- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- New finds, old favorites, one card. Choose a unique gift card design featuring your favorite games or apps. This card can also be used for anything else on Google Play. There’s something for everyone, so find what’s yours. Go Play.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
The Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) is Google’s announced payments framework for user-defined spending limits, product or brand constraints, authorization boundaries and an auditable record. Its practical protections depend on retailer, platform, payment and country support; it does not eliminate every payment or fulfillment risk.
Operationally, merchants should evaluate:
- Whether feeds and APIs update quickly enough to keep price and inventory truthful.
- Whether product pages expose clear compatibility, exclusions, shipping and returns information.
- Whether Google Pay, UCP, identity linking and merchant-of-record workflows are supported.
- Whether customer service can resolve orders that began on an AI surface.
- Whether analytics distinguishes AI visibility, assisted conversions, Google-hosted checkout and retailer-site checkout.
- Whether brand teams can correct AI summaries that omit restrictions or overstate benefits.
Privacy, advertising and trust
Convenience can require more data. Depending on the feature, Google may use account history, personalization settings, uploaded images, Google Pay details, loyalty information or activity across Google services. Review the controls attached to the specific feature and avoid uploading images you are not comfortable submitting for processing and evaluation.
Google Shopping also remains a commercial ecosystem containing paid placements, merchant feeds, retailer relationships and checkout integrations. An AI-generated shortlist should not be read as an assurance of neutrality, the lowest delivered price or superior seller quality.

Bottom line for shoppers and retailers
Google’s AI tools are most useful for turning a broad shopping problem into a shortlist, comparison or price-monitoring task. They are least trustworthy as final authorities on fit, authenticity, compatibility, inventory, seller reliability or total delivered cost. Verify the exact product and merchant before paying.
For retailers, the strategic work is less about generating attractive AI copy and more about maintaining precise, fresh catalog data; exposing variants, compatibility, shipping and returns; preparing for UCP and payment integrations; and measuring what AI surfaces actually contribute.
