There is no responsible single “average” colocation price. Your bill is normally the sum of space, power, connectivity, cross-connects, support, one-time setup work, taxes and pass-through fees. Location, usable power, network ecosystem, redundancy and contract terms often matter more than the number of rack units you occupy.

Use a normalized quote—not an advertised cabinet price—to compare facilities. Ask every provider to price the same cabinet, power topology, bandwidth, support hours, term and exit conditions.

What colocation includes

Colocation puts your servers and networking equipment in a professional data center. The provider generally supplies floor space, cabinets or cages, electrical distribution, UPS and generator-backed infrastructure, cooling, physical security, fire protection, carrier access and cross-connect capability. Remote-hands, receiving, staging and storage may be available at extra cost or under a support plan. Equinix describes the model as placing customer-owned hardware in dedicated space in its data centers: its colocation overview.

You usually remain responsible for servers, storage, operating systems, applications, software licenses, hardware warranties, monitoring, backups, replacement parts and administration. The contract and facility service catalog determine what is actually included.

The anatomy of a colocation bill

Separate monthly recurring charges (MRC) from non-recurring charges (NRC) before comparing offers.

Cost component What it can include Questions to ask
Space Rack units, partial or full cabinet, cage, suite or custom floor space Private or shared? Dimensions, depth, weight limit and expansion rights?
Power Allocated or metered kW/kVA, circuits, A+B feeds, PDUs and overages Is the figure usable IT load, circuit capacity or facility input?
Connectivity Internet, transit, cloud ports, WAN, exchange access and IP addresses What are port speed, commit, burst rules, egress and overage rates?
Cross-connects Fiber or copper installation, monthly port fees, diverse paths Are carrier, cloud-provider and facility charges all shown?
Operations Remote hands, access, escorts, receiving, storage and staging What hours, minimum increments and emergency rates apply?
NRC and pass-throughs Installation, shipping, migration, deinstallation, taxes and utility fees Which charges are one-time, recurring, variable or third-party?

For example, Equinix’s Secure Cabinet Express documentation shows recurring space-and-power charges and NRCs for cabinet and circuit installation: order documentation.

How space affects price

Options range from shared rack units and quarter or half cabinets to private cabinets, cages and suites. A few rack units can carry a disproportionate minimum because the provider still supplies power, security, access and account administration. A full cabinet costs more but gives you predictable placement, cabling and expansion. Cages and suites add physical separation and room for multiple cabinets, with higher fixed build-out costs. Iron Mountain distinguishes standard cabinets from larger cage deployments: its colocation offering.

Compare usable capacity, not just footprint

  • Confirm cabinet height, depth, width and weight limit.
  • Check whether staging space, cabinet accessories and after-hours access are included.
  • For multiple cabinets, request cage dimensions, expansion space and security boundaries.

Power pricing is often the pivotal variable

Quotes may use amps, volts and phase, kW, kVA, circuit capacity, committed draw, metered consumption or a power cap. Circuit rating is not the same as continuously usable load: derating, breaker limits, PDU limits and provider rules can reduce it. Equinix’s Secure Cabinet Express documentation says its draw cap is an aggregate order cap and displays recurring charges per kVA: see the stated definitions.

Common power models

  • Included allowance within the cabinet price.
  • Fixed monthly charge per kW or kVA.
  • Metered consumption, sometimes with demand or peak rules.
  • Reserved capacity plus usage or overage fees.
  • Separate single-feed or redundant A+B circuit charges.

Ask whether the quoted number is IT load or facility input, whether A and B feeds terminate on genuinely separate paths, and what happens above the cap.

High-density and GPU equipment

GPU, AI and storage-dense systems need a separate technical review. Verify maximum kW per cabinet, cooling and liquid-cooling support, rack weight, busway limits, airflow, electrical topology and equipment acceptance. Digital Realty’s March 2026 high-density material illustrates that these deployments are a distinct product category: high-density colocation datasheet.

Connectivity, bandwidth and cross-connects

A low cabinet rate can be offset by transit, cloud connectivity, IP addresses and cross-connects. Bandwidth may be fixed, burstable, usage-based or described as unmetered while still limited by port speed, fair-use terms or upstream capacity. Equinix documents fixed, usage-based and burst billing, with bandwidth and IP addresses as recurring components: Internet Access billing. Its documented example of a 1-Gbps commitment and $1,000 monthly fee applies only to that service and market, not to colocation generally.

Cross-connect pricing can include installation, monthly recurring, expedite, diverse-path, extended-distance and deinstallation fees. The carrier or cloud provider may add a separate port or circuit charge. Equinix lists these product-specific terms, including possible installation-only intra-customer connections, at cross-connect pricing and billing terms. Its cross-connect documentation also states that some package MRC can begin when the order is placed, before installation: cross-connect overview.

Fiber Connect pricing varies by metro and may have standard, extended and diverse options: Fiber Connect details.

Remote hands, logistics and compliance

Remote hands can cover reboots, drive replacement, cabling, inventory checks, unpacking, photography and vendor escort. Charges may be per incident, hourly or in 15-minute increments, with different business-hours and emergency rates. Equinix offers Smart Hands and configurable support plans: service overview. Model expected incidents, not the lowest advertised rate, if no local engineer is available.

Budget for cabinet and circuit installation, rack-and-stack, shipping, receiving, storage, packaging disposal, loading-dock services, migration, labeling, deinstallation and secure disposal. Compliance can add dedicated cages, chain-of-custody procedures, audit support and reporting. A facility certification does not make your deployment compliant; your access controls, logging, encryption, policies and personnel procedures still matter.

Contract economics and effective monthly cost

Longer terms can reduce monthly pricing or setup fees, but create early-termination, capacity and renewal risk. Equinix’s documented Secure Cabinet Express terms include 24, 36, 48 and 60 months; quoted prices are guaranteed for the selected term, while post-expiration increases require review: contract information.

Trade-offs that change the answer

Choice Potential benefit Potential cost or risk
Fixed power Predictable budgeting Paying for unused reservation or exceeding caps
Metered power Payment tracks light utilization Variable bills and peak-demand exposure
Single feed Lower price for noncritical equipment No protection from feed maintenance or failure
A+B feeds Supports dual-PSU maintenance resilience Higher cost; may still share an upstream failure domain
Shared cabinet Lower entry commitment Access, space, cabling and expansion restrictions
Long term Price protection and negotiating leverage Termination and technology-change risk

Carrier-dense facilities can cost more but reduce transport, cloud-access and partner-connectivity expense. CoreSite identifies space, power and connectivity as core pricing elements and notes cross-connect and remote-hands charges: pricing explanation.

Colocation versus other infrastructure models

  • Cloud: best for highly variable demand or teams avoiding hardware ownership; include egress, managed services, staffing and availability architecture.
  • Dedicated or managed servers: simpler operations and potentially faster deployment, but less hardware control and customization.
  • Colocation: fits predictable workloads, owned or specialized hardware, physical-control requirements and low-latency interconnection.
  • Private suite or build-to-suit: suits large, stable deployments needing dedicated infrastructure and staffing, with the highest fixed commitment.

Compare capital equipment, refresh cycles, electricity, network, backups, staffing, procurement time, migration and exit costs—not just the monthly infrastructure line.

Final decision checklist

  • Choose colocation when you need hardware ownership, predictable long-term capacity, specialized equipment, interconnection or physical-control requirements.
  • Choose a smaller managed or cloud model when utilization is uncertain, workloads are highly variable or your team does not want hardware logistics.
  • Do not sign until power density, diversity, connectivity, support rates, renewal terms and all pass-through charges are documented.
