Europe Had Created at Least 25 New Unicorns by July 2026—What the Number Really Means

Sifted counted 25 European unicorns by July 3, 2026, while PitchBook data recorded 15 in Q1. Here is what the numbers, companies and valuations really show.

Yes—more than 10 European startups became unicorns in 2026. Sifted counted 25 by July 3, while PitchBook data reported by Rothschild & Co counted 15 in the first quarter alone. Those figures are not contradictory or additive: databases use different geographic boundaries and definitions, and the July number is a midyear observation rather than a final 2026 total.

The more useful conclusion is that European private-market activity has clearly strengthened, particularly around artificial intelligence, infrastructure, defense and advanced industrial technology. But a $1 billion valuation is a financing price—not proof of $1 billion in revenue, profit or cash.

What counts as a European unicorn?

A unicorn is a privately held startup valued at at least $1 billion, usually through a disclosed funding round or strategic investment. The valuation is the negotiated price implied by that transaction. It is not the company’s revenue, assets, cash balance or eventual sale proceeds, and it can later be marked down.

Some databases also include companies that reached the threshold through an acquisition or public-market exit. Dealroom’s broader definition covers a company that has achieved a $1 billion-plus valuation or exit; it reported 717 European unicorns cumulatively in its July 8, 2026 update (Dealroom). A count of newly created private unicorns should not mix those exits with first-time funding milestones.

Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future
  • If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
  • The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.

How many were created in 2026?

Measure Result What it means
Q1 2026 15 PitchBook data cited by Rothschild & Co; the strongest European quarterly creation rate since Q2 2022.
By July 3, 2026 25 Sifted’s running count; roughly one new unicorn per week and five fewer than all of 2025.
Full-year 2026 Not yet established No cited source had closed the year, so 25 must not be presented as the final total.

Read together, the sources establish a minimum of 25 by early July and confirm that the headline claim is securely true. The figures should not be added: the first-quarter companies are included within the later year-to-date count, and each tracker may classify companies differently.

Definitions also vary by geography. “European” can mean headquarters, founding location, principal operations or ecosystem affiliation. TechCrunch, for example, included Cast AI because of its Lithuanian roots and major Vilnius office despite its Florida headquarters, and included Preply because of its Ukrainian founders and substantial European operations (TechCrunch).

Companies identified in 2026 coverage

The following are named examples, not a definitive full-year roster. Some were identified in company reporting; others appear in sector or quarterly lists, so the evidence does not establish identical status for every entry.

Company European connection Sector Reported event or valuation
Aikido Security Belgium Cybersecurity $60 million Series B at a $1 billion valuation
Cast AI Lithuanian roots; major Vilnius office; Florida headquarters Cloud optimization and AI infrastructure Strategic investment pushed valuation above $1 billion
Harmattan AI France Defense technology $200 million Series B at a reported $1.4 billion valuation
Osapiens Germany ESG and compliance software $100 million Series C at more than $1.1 billion
Preply Ukrainian founders; offices including Barcelona, London and Kyiv Edtech and language learning $150 million Series D at a reported $1.2 billion
Uforce European defense startup Autonomous drones $1 billion valuation on an initial $50 million raise
Roark Aerospace European defense startup Autonomous defense systems Reported $1.8 billion valuation
Keyrock Europe Crypto-market infrastructure Listed among Q1 2026 unicorns
9fin Europe Debt analytics and fintech Listed among Q1 2026 unicorns
Nscale Europe AI data centers Listed among major 2026 rounds and unicorn creation
Pasqal Europe Quantum computing Listed among Q1 2026 unicorns
Neura Robotics Europe Robotics Listed among Q1 2026 unicorns

Company examples are drawn from TechCrunch, Rothschild & Co’s PitchBook-based analysis and Dealroom. A funding amount is not automatically a new-unicorn count: an already private unicorn can raise another large round without crossing the threshold for the first time.

Which sectors are producing them?

AI and the infrastructure around it

The activity extends beyond AI applications to data centers, cloud optimization, semiconductors and computing capacity. Rothschild’s Q1 analysis named AI businesses alongside semiconductor company Olix Computing, data-center operator Nscale, quantum company Pasqal and robotics company Neura Robotics. Dealroom said AI attracted the most European venture funding in the 12 months through Q2 2026.

Defense and autonomous systems

Harmattan AI, Uforce and Roark Aerospace illustrate demand for defense and dual-use systems. Government procurement, geopolitical urgency and strategic corporate investment are plausible contributors, but the available data does not prove that any one factor caused the increase.

Cybersecurity, fintech and industrial software

Aikido Security, Keyrock and 9fin show that the cohort is not exclusively AI-native. Osapiens represents compliance software, while European funding also remained relatively strong in food, energy and health according to Dealroom.

Rothschild reported that pure AI represented 20% of European growth-equity value in Q1, compared with 78% in the United States. That contrast points to a more varied European funding mix rather than an AI-only market.

Why did creation accelerate?

  • AI investor demand: fast growth expectations and scarce computing capacity can support very large rounds.
  • Strategic capital: industrial, cloud, semiconductor and defense investors can fund companies for capability or supply-chain reasons as well as near-term financial returns.
  • Defense spending: geopolitical demand has raised the strategic value of autonomous and security technologies.
  • Improved growth financing: European growth-equity fundraising reached $18 billion in Q1 2026, according to Rothschild & Co.
  • Recovery from the prior slowdown: more late-stage transactions make valuation milestones visible again after weaker 2022–2025 activity.

These are informed explanations, not a controlled test of causation. A high valuation can reflect scarcity and strategic positioning before durable economics are demonstrated.

Europe is an ecosystem, not one legal category

Country totals depend on whether a tracker uses headquarters, incorporation, founder origin or operating footprint. London remained Europe’s leading startup-VC metro in Dealroom’s trailing-12-month data through Q2 2026, followed by Paris and Stockholm (Dealroom). Companies with U.S. incorporation but European founders or large European teams make a single “European” boundary impossible without stating the rule.

Currency also matters. The cited valuations are generally in U.S. dollars; euro-denominated transactions should not be compared without a conversion date. Publicly announced rounds and database estimates may likewise produce different totals.

Valuation is not the same as business strength

For founders, investors and readers assessing the boom, the key question is what supports the price after the announcement. A stronger evaluation checks:

  • recurring revenue and growth rate;
  • customer retention, concentration and contract duration;
  • gross margin and cost of serving AI or hardware workloads;
  • cash runway and the terms attached to the round;
  • evidence of product-market fit, employee growth and repeat purchasing;
  • later markdowns, layoffs, delayed deployments or successful follow-on financing.

Private shares do not trade continuously, so a negotiated round can remain the reference valuation even as conditions change. TechCrunch explicitly cautioned that valuation is not equivalent to commercial success (TechCrunch).

New unicorns versus billion-dollar exits

Creation and exits measure different parts of an ecosystem. Sifted reported that seven European billion-dollar startups had found buyers or reached public markets by July 28, 2026, matching Europe’s previous annual record for such exits (Sifted). Those transactions are evidence of liquidity and buyer demand, not additional first-time private unicorns.

A durable recovery would eventually show several signals together: new company formation, repeatable revenue growth, follow-on funding on defensible terms, successful acquisitions or listings, healthy public-market performance and reinvestment by founders and employees. The 2026 count establishes stronger valuation activity; it does not yet establish all of those outcomes.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The claim is true on the evidence available: at least 25 European startups had reached unicorn status by July 3, 2026, and 15 were counted in Q1. It is a meaningful improvement over recent years, but the number remains a dated, methodology-dependent tally. Whether 2026 proves a lasting European resurgence will depend on revenue, resilience and exits—not valuation announcements alone.
