Equinix’s MI1 redevelopment in Miami is planned to add 475 sellable cabinets, with a target opening in Q3 2026 and total capital expenditure of $59 million. The project is part of a wider Miami strategy: Equinix positions the metro as a U.S. communications gateway to Latin America, with subsea-cable access, carrier connections and cloud on-ramps.
What Equinix is expanding in Miami
The MI1 project is a redevelopment, not simply a claim that a new building is already open. Equinix’s 2026 project table, based on 2025 year-end data, lists a Q3 2026 target opening, 475 sellable cabinets and $59 million in total capex. Those are project plans and target figures; the published information does not establish whether the work was completed by the end of the target quarter.
| MI1 redevelopment item | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Target opening | Q3 2026 | Target listed by Equinix in 2026, based on 2025 year-end data |
| Additional sellable cabinets | 475 | Planned project capacity; not a count of cabinets already leased or occupied |
| Total capex | $59 million | Equinix’s stated total project capex |
“Sellable cabinets” describe planned colocation capacity that can be offered to customers. The figure alone does not say how quickly that capacity will be leased, what power customers will receive in practice, or what deployment will cost. Equinix’s current MI1 specifications list 255,513 square feet, a 5 kVA minimum cabinet density, N+1 power and cooling redundancy, and 30 hours or more of generator autonomy at full load.
Why Miami matters for Latin American connectivity
Miami’s role is not limited to the MI1 building. Equinix lists MI1, MI2, MI3 and MI6 in the metro and describes the area as a communications gateway to Latin America. The business case is the combination of colocation space with access to networks, subsea cable systems and cloud services. That combination can give companies operating across the Americas more options for connecting their infrastructure, but it does not by itself guarantee a particular route, price or performance level.

Equinix’s Miami metro datasheet describes its facilities as being “in the heart of Miami” and says they provide direct connectivity to network and cloud service providers, content delivery networks and enterprises. In practical terms, a company can place equipment in a data center where multiple service providers are present and arrange connections to the networks or platforms it uses. Availability and terms depend on the specific facility, providers and services selected.
How subsea cables and cloud on-ramps fit together
Subsea cable access
Subsea cables carry international traffic along physical routes across the ocean. A cable landing site and a data center with connections to that cable can form part of a route between U.S. infrastructure and Latin American markets. More route options may help network operators design for capacity and resilience, but the existence of a cable does not establish a route’s end-to-end latency, availability or commercial terms for every customer.

Equinix’s 2016 announcement of the Monet cable described an initial design capacity of at least 60 Tb/s. The system was planned to land at MI3 in Miami and at Fortaleza and Praia Grande near São Paulo. That is the cable’s initial design capacity as announced, not a measure of bandwidth available to an individual Equinix customer. At the time, Javier Emicuri, Antel CEO and chairman of the Monet Executive Committee, called the announcement an effort to connect “geographies, people, countries and cultures.” Equinix also characterized locating Monet’s Florida cable landing equipment at its Miami site as a promising development for submarine-cable communications.
Cloud on-ramps
A cloud on-ramp provides a private network connection to a cloud provider rather than relying solely on the public internet. Equinix announced AWS Direct Connect in the Miami and São Paulo metros, giving customers operating in Latin America a way to access AWS privately from those locations. A private connection can be useful for organizations that want a more controlled network path to cloud workloads; it does not, on its own, guarantee a specific latency or uninterrupted service.

What MI3’s history says about the Miami-to-Brazil route
Equinix’s 2012 MI3 opening release described a 31,300-square-foot site 44 miles from Miami, with direct links to Latin American network operators. It also highlighted a low-latency route to Brazil via GlobeNet. Those details show how MI3 was positioned when it opened; they are not a current route-by-route latency measurement or service-level commitment for traffic using MI1 today.
For a company evaluating Brazil traffic, the relevant question is not simply whether Miami is geographically closer or whether a cable has a landing there. The usable path depends on the network providers and routes available to that company, the destination in Brazil, the selected service and the performance commitment in its contract. The public figures cited here do not give a route-specific latency SLA.

What the published figures do—and do not—establish
Equinix’s current Miami page shows a global guaranteed uptime figure of 99.9999% or higher. That is a company-wide figure shown on the Miami page, not evidence in the published information that this exact guarantee applies identically to every Miami facility, product or customer configuration. Prospective customers should confirm the applicable service-level agreement and exclusions for the specific deployment.
Likewise, MI1’s N+1 power and cooling redundancy and 30-plus hours of generator autonomy at full load describe facility design specifications. They are relevant resilience characteristics, but do not establish that every component or network path is redundant end to end. Customers should assess the full design, including their own equipment, carriers, cloud connections, backup arrangements and recovery procedures.

How to assess Miami against another regional gateway
Miami is one candidate location, not an automatic best choice for every Latin American workload. Compare it with São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá or another relevant metro using the requirements of the application and the company’s users:
- Route latency and diversity: Ask providers for routes to the actual customer, cloud region or application endpoints, and confirm how performance is measured and what the contract guarantees.
- Subsea access: Identify which cable systems and network providers are available to the proposed facility, and whether the required route can be contracted.
- Space, power and timing: Compare available cabinets, power density and delivery dates. MI1’s 475 cabinets are planned capacity with a Q3 2026 target, not evidence that a particular cabinet or power configuration is immediately available.
- Carrier and cloud ecosystem: Confirm that the specific carriers, cloud on-ramps and interconnection services needed by the business are available at the chosen site.
- Resilience and recovery: Evaluate facility infrastructure alongside diverse network paths, secondary sites, backups and recovery targets.
- Data location and regulation: Check applicable legal, regulatory and contractual requirements for where data may be stored and processed.
- Total deployment cost: Request a full quote covering space, power, cross-connects, network transport, cloud connectivity and any needed installation. Public information cited here does not provide a complete price list.
Equinix’s published expansion and connectivity details make Miami a meaningful option for organizations building links between U.S. infrastructure and Latin America. They are a starting point for a site evaluation, not a substitute for confirming current availability, exact routes, contractual service levels and total cost with Equinix and the relevant network or cloud providers.
