Equinix opened DC11, a new International Business Exchange (IBX) data center on its Ashburn, Virginia campus, on May 9, 2013. The “crown jewel” label came from contemporaneous coverage; the practical addition was customer colocation space and cabinet capacity connected to the existing campus network.

What Equinix announced for DC11

Equinix’s 2011 project announcement placed DC11 next to DC6 and described a planned facility of about 232,000 gross square feet. The first phase was expected to provide about 42,800 square feet of customer floor space and capacity for 1,200 cabinets, with room for 1,800 additional cabinets in future phases. Equinix initially estimated $88 million in expansion capital. Equinix’s 2011 announcement

A later Equinix expansion tracking sheet records phase I at 1,200 cabinet equivalents and $79 million in capital expenditure. It lists the phase as opened in the first quarter of 2013; Equinix’s opening account gives the public opening date as May 9. The $88 million figure was the earlier estimate, while $79 million is the later recorded expenditure; the sources report different figures and do not explain the difference. How DC11 fit into the Ashburn campus

DC11 was presented as an extension of Equinix’s Ashburn campus, where networks, cloud and IT service providers, content companies, and enterprise customers could connect. Equinix said the new building had direct connectivity within the campus and sat beside DC6.

In its 2013 description, Equinix characterized the campus as eight fiber-connected buildings with more than 500,000 square feet of data center space and more than 10,000 cross-connects, alongside hundreds of company and network participants. These are historical company figures, not a current count. The 2013 Data Center Knowledge report called DC11 the largest facility then on Equinix’s six-building primary Ashburn campus and the company’s eighth Northern Virginia facility. It also described Ashburn as an important East Coast communications hub and cited demand from cloud, IT, media, retail, and government customers; those statements reflect the period’s reporting, not a current market ranking. At the opening, Equinix sales engineer Tom Minogue summarized the value proposition as, “It’s all about space and power,” then added, “Well, space, power and cross connects.” In a separate promotional post, Equinix Marketing Manager Lisa Kennedy argued that networks should be present to connect with others on the campus. That was the company’s sales case, rather than an independent assessment of the facility’s technical or commercial fit. Equinix’s opening account · Equinix’s DC11 preview

What the 2013 reports said about size and design

The contemporary Data Center Knowledge article described DC11 as a 230,000-square-foot facility with room for 120,000 square feet of colocation, more than 42,000 square feet added in the initial phase, capacity for 1,200 cabinets, and 15 megawatts of “critical potential.” The 15 MW wording belongs to that report; it is not a current statement of available power. Equinix’s 2011 announcement provides the more clearly scoped project figures: approximately 232,000 gross square feet overall and approximately 42,800 square feet of customer floor space in phase one.

Opening-era descriptions noted overhead ducting rather than a raised floor, perimeter fencing, a guarded and controlled parking entrance, mantraps, biometric hand-reader access, round-the-clock guards, and recorded CCTV monitoring. These descriptions document the opening period only and do not establish DC11’s current security configuration. Data Center Knowledge’s 2013 facility report · Equinix’s opening account

What Equinix lists for DC11 now

As viewed on September 30, 2026, Equinix’s DC11 facility page listed the address as 21721 Filigree Court, Suite B, Ashburn, VA 20147, and 116,831 square feet of colocation space. It listed N+1 power and cooling redundancy, as well as HIPAA, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, SOC 1 Type II, and SOC 2 Type II certifications. Facility details and certifications can change, so consult the live listing for current information. Equinix DC11 facility page

The current listed colocation area is not directly comparable to the original project’s approximately 232,000 gross square feet: the figures describe different types of space and come from different dates. The available sources also do not establish current available power, pricing, contract terms, latency, or carrier availability, so they are not enough to assess DC11 against another site for a present-day purchase decision.
