Equinix announced a company-wide brand initiative and a new logo on October 27, 2008, as it marked its tenth anniversary. The company said the fortress-inspired logo represented its role in safeguarding customers’ information, while the broader initiative also covered customer experience and a change to the name of its IBX data centers.

When did Equinix launch the new brand?

Equinix announced the initiative on October 27, 2008. The company connected the launch to its tenth anniversary and expanding international operations, including its European presence following the acquisition of colocation provider IXEurope the previous year. These were the company’s stated reasons for the timing, as described in its 2008 announcement.

The release described Equinix as operating 41 International Business Exchange data centers across 18 markets in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. That is a figure reported in 2008, not a current count.

What did the new logo mean?

Equinix said the logo represented a fortress structure, intended to symbolize the company’s role in safeguarding customers’ information assets. The announcement presented this as the meaning behind the mark; it did not identify a designer or agency, explain the design process, provide a budget, or publish a rollout schedule.

What did the rebrand change beyond the logo?

Equinix described the initiative as company-wide, extending beyond visual identity. The company said it would shape how customers encountered Equinix through phone interactions, the alignment of global products and services, and the experience inside its data centers. The announcement framed these changes as part of a more consistent customer experience worldwide.

IBX became International Business Exchange

Equinix also said its Internet Business Exchange (IBX) data centers would be called International Business Exchange data centers. The company explained that the new expansion of the name reflected its evolution beyond internet connectivity toward global network connectivity.

What Equinix said about the initiative

Then-president and CEO Steve Smith linked the launch to the company’s growth over its first decade: “Ten years after Equinix was founded on the groundbreaking idea that the infrastructure of the Internet and modern IT operations needed a centralized and high performance physical environment in order to grow, Equinix has now become a critical element in the information-driven world and is relied upon by thousands of businesses around the world,” he said.

Smith also described the initiative as a way to build on Equinix’s position and deliver a consistent customer experience globally. Those statements are the company’s positioning in 2008, rather than independent assessments of its market standing or the rebrand’s results.
