Equinix opened its LA4 data center in El Segundo, California, on August 27, 2009. It was the company’s fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) facility in the Los Angeles area. The opening announcement described a first phase and a larger planned build-out; those historical figures should not be read as a statement of capacity available today.
What is Equinix LA4?
LA4 is an Equinix IBX data center in El Segundo, near the company’s existing LA3 facility. In its August 27, 2009 announcement, Equinix said LA4 was its fourth data center in the Los Angeles area.
The company said the facility would serve demand from entertainment and digital-media businesses for colocation and network-exchange services. Equinix’s stated rationale was that network connectivity helped those companies deliver content to end users; this was the company’s market rationale, not a reported performance result.
What Equinix announced at the 2009 opening
The announcement described a $95 million first phase that opened that day, alongside a larger plan for the facility. Equinix’s figures were announcement-era plans and claims, not confirmation of current deployed capacity or availability.

|---|---|
| First-phase investment | $95 million |
| First-phase cabinet capacity | 800 cabinets |
| First-phase IBXflex space | More than 10,000 square feet; Equinix described IBXflex as office space in the same data center as customers’ equipment |
| Planned full-build facility size | 177,000 square feet |
| Planned full-build cabinet capacity | Approximately 3,000 cabinets |
Equinix also said LA4 would link to its three other Los Angeles-area IBX centers through IBXLink, which it described as redundant fiber connections that could let customers connect across the four facilities as if they were in one building. The release said those links would provide access to more than 60 carriers and network service providers operating in Equinix’s existing LA-area centers. Both the connectivity description and carrier count are claims from the 2009 announcement.

Equinix’s Los Angeles data center page currently lists LA1, LA3, LA4, and LA7. The company describes the metro as offering colocation, interconnection, cloud on-ramps, and access to subsea cables.

What the public information does not establish
The cited public material does not establish LA4’s current occupancy, customer pricing, available cabinets, or actual deployed capacity. The opening release includes forward-looking statements and cautions that actual results may differ, so its planned full-build figures should remain attributed to Equinix and to 2009.
For company-wide context only, Equinix’s 2025 Form 10-K reports 280 data centers across 77 markets after 2025 openings and acquisitions. It says expansion decisions take into account factors such as demand, power availability, access to networks and cloud partners, and investment requirements. Those company-wide statements do not establish LA4’s current capacity or explain specifically why the El Segundo site was selected.
