“Equinix Celebrates 10 Years on NASDAQ” refers to a ceremony held on August 11, 2010—not a current anniversary. Equinix marked a decade since its initial public offering (IPO) and NASDAQ listing, with then-president and CEO Steve Smith ringing NASDAQ’s opening bell.
What the 2010 ceremony marked
Equinix’s August 11, 2010 company release said the event celebrated the 10th anniversary of its IPO and listing on NASDAQ. Contemporary coverage by Data Center Knowledge likewise described an opening-bell event at NASDAQ MarketSite in New York.
The anniversary language describes the decade since Equinix became a public company. It does not mean the IPO occurred on August 11, 2000: Equinix’s 2004 Form 10-K says its IPO registration statement became effective on August 10, 2000, while common stock began trading in August 2000. The filing does not establish a more precise first trading date.
Timeline of the IPO and anniversary
| Date or period | Documented event |
|---|---|
| August 10, 2000 | Equinix’s 2004 Form 10-K states that its IPO registration statement became effective. |
| August 2000 | Equinix common stock began trading under the symbol EQIX, according to the 2004 Form 10-K. |
| August 11, 2010 | Equinix held its tenth-anniversary ceremony at NASDAQ MarketSite; CEO Steve Smith rang the opening bell. |
What Equinix said about its first decade
In the 2010 release, Smith characterized the company’s development this way: “The last 10 years have been characterized by our ability to capitalize on emerging trends and enable our customers to seize new opportunities.”
#1 Best Overall
He added: “Equinix has evolved considerably since our IPO, but the same characteristics that drove us in the beginning – creativity, innovation, commitment to our customers – continue to push us to new heights today.”
These statements were made by Smith as Equinix’s president and CEO in 2010 and describe the company’s own view of its history.
Equinix’s reported position in 2010
The release described Equinix at that time as a provider of global data-center services. Its platform included energy-efficient International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, together with network, interconnection and exchange services. Those are descriptions of the company in 2010, not specifications for its present-day operations.
- Growth: Equinix reported 30 consecutive quarters of growth in the August 11, 2010 release.
- Revenue outlook: The company said it expected more than $1 billion in annual revenue for 2010. This was a company forecast at the time, not an independently verified final result.
- Demand drivers: The release linked demand to cloud and information-technology services, electronic trading, online video and mobile data.
Why the date distinction matters
A headline about ten years on NASDAQ can be read as a current corporate announcement, but the underlying event is historical. The relevant anniversary ceremony occurred on August 11, 2010, ten years after Equinix’s August 2000 IPO period. The IPO’s effective date, the start of trading and the later bell-ringing ceremony are related milestones, but they are not the same event.
