Elon Musk’s X.com Explained: It Isn’t a New Mystery Website

X.com is the official web address for X, formerly Twitter. Here’s what changed in 2024, how the domain connects to Musk’s 1999 venture, and what X’s paid and payment plans really mean.

X.com is the current web address for X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. The important change happened on May 17, 2024, when Elon Musk said X’s core systems had moved from Twitter.com to X.com. That was a domain migration completing the Twitter-to-X rebrand—not the launch of a separate mystery startup or new online bank.

As of August 18, 2026, X.com opens the X platform. Musk’s broader plans include payments and an “everything app,” but those ambitions should not be confused with a universally available banking product.

What is X.com today?

X.com is the public web address for X. X’s official company directory identifies the domain as the platform itself and links to related services for creators, advertisers, businesses, developers, privacy and transparency at about.x.com.

Depending on your account, country, device and rollout status, the site can provide:

  • Public posts, replies and real-time conversations
  • Direct messaging
  • Video and audio features
  • Communities
  • Long-form posts and articles
  • Grok and other AI-related features
  • Paid subscriptions and creator-monetization tools
  • Advertising and business services

Not every feature is available to every user. A logged-out browser, iOS or Android app, and desktop web session may show different tools.

Did Elon Musk launch a new website?

Yes, if “launch” means moving the existing platform to a new domain. No, if it means unveiling a separate mystery company. On May 17, 2024, Musk said that “all core systems” had moved to X.com. Twitter.com began redirecting visitors to the new address, although browsers, cached pages, apps and third-party links could continue displaying the older hostname for a time. The change was reported by CBS News.

There is no verified indication in the current official sources that X.com is a separate undisclosed website. That conclusion reflects the destination users see now; it is not proof that an experimental project could never exist elsewhere.

How Twitter became X

Date What happened
October 27, 2022 Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, according to reporting summarized by TechCrunch.
July 2023 Twitter was rebranded as X and its bird branding began being replaced.
May 17, 2024 Musk said the platform’s core systems had moved to X.com; Twitter.com redirected to X.com.

The domain switch was the last major public step in a rebrand that had already changed the service’s name, logo and much of its product language. Existing users generally kept using the same underlying social network rather than creating accounts on a wholly new service.

Why the X.com name matters

The 1999 financial-services company

Musk co-founded an online financial-services company called X.com in 1999. It merged with Confinity, whose products included PayPal, and the combined business ultimately adopted the PayPal name. Musk later reacquired the X.com domain. Contemporary background reporting is available from CBS News and Sherwood News.

The current X.com site is not that old online bank. It is the web front end for the X social platform.

The “everything app” ambition

Musk has described X as a possible “everything app,” combining social communication with messaging, video, creators, advertising, AI, commerce and payments. X’s own strategy post discussed peer-to-peer payments and expanded AI use at blog.x.com.

That is a strategic ambition, not evidence that X.com is already a complete bank, payment processor or universally available financial-services platform.

What can users and businesses pay for?

X.com is free to browse and use for many core functions, but X also sells subscriptions and business services. The following U.S. web prices were listed in August 2026; taxes, payment fees, location and platform can change the final amount.

Product Published price or economics What to know
X Premium Basic: $3/month or $32/year; Premium: $8/month or $84/year; Premium+: $40/month or $395/year Plans may include editing, longer posts and videos, reduced or removed ads, Grok access, verification-related features and access to monetization applications. Prices and benefits can change. See X’s plan page.
Creator Subscriptions Eligible creators can earn up to approximately 97% of gross subscription revenue App-store and payment fees, refunds and chargebacks reduce the amount actually received. Details are in X’s creator guidance.
Creator Revenue Sharing Eligibility includes an active qualifying Premium subscription, at least 5 million organic impressions in three months, at least 500 verified followers, a supported country and rule compliance Payouts are processed through Stripe, with a listed $30 minimum. X may modify, suspend or cancel the program; approval and income are not guaranteed. See the eligibility rules.
X Ads No fixed rate card or stated minimum spend Campaigns run through an auction. Cost depends on bids, audience demand, engagement and the campaign objective, as explained by X Ads pricing guidance.
Premium Business / Premium Organizations U.S. prices listed in August 2026: Basic business $200/month or $2,000/year; Full Access $1,000/month or $10,000/year; additional affiliate seats $50/month or $600/year These plans target organizations needing verification, affiliate accounts, support and related business tools. See Premium Business and Premium Organizations.

Premium does not guarantee audience growth, approval for monetization or meaningful earnings. Creator programs are especially dependent on eligibility, policy compliance, geography and changing platform rules.

Has X.com launched payments?

X has promoted peer-to-peer payments and broader commerce as part of its future strategy, but a roadmap is not proof of universal availability. Do not treat X.com as a bank or assume that every account can send, receive or store money through the platform.

Before using any financial feature, verify the exact product name, launch date, country availability, fees, identity requirements and the regulated entity providing the service. Those details can differ from ordinary social features.

What changed for ordinary users?

  • The address bar changed from Twitter.com to X.com.
  • Twitter.com links began redirecting to X.com.
  • The name, logo and account branding had already been changing since 2023.
  • Old links, app deep links, embeds and cached pages may still show Twitter wording or behave differently.

Domain behavior is not identical across browsers, products and third-party services. A redirect or an old-looking screenshot does not by itself indicate a new launch.

How to judge a “mystery X.com” claim

  1. Check the publication date. A May 17, 2024 article may be describing the domain migration. A claim presented as new August 2026 news needs evidence of a separate product.
  2. Identify the destination. If the page shows posts, messages, video, communities or creator tools, it is the X social platform.
  3. Separate the domain from the company. X.com is a URL; X is the platform; X Corp. is a corporate entity; the 1999 X.com was a historical financial-services venture.
  4. Distinguish plans from live features. Payments and the “everything app” should be described as plans unless an official, currently available product is documented for the relevant country and account.

Is X.com safe to use?

Confirm that the address bar shows the exact x.com hostname before entering a password or payment information. Be especially careful with login pages reached through unsolicited messages, advertisements or shortened links. A lookalike domain, a spoofed screenshot, a regional experiment or a phishing page can all be mistaken for an official X launch.

  • Navigate directly to x.com rather than relying on an unexpected login link.
  • Check spelling before signing in.
  • Do not provide credentials or payment details to a third-party page claiming to be X.
  • For subscriptions or monetization, start from X’s own help or product pages and review the current terms.

What this means for your money

For most readers, X.com is a social-media destination, not a new financial institution. A creator considering monetization should budget for a paid plan only after checking the current thresholds and whether a paying audience exists. A business buying ads should evaluate auction costs, targeting, content adjacency and brand risk rather than assuming X advertising is automatically cheap. Anyone considering a payment feature should verify availability and regulatory details instead of relying on the “everything app” label.

The bottom line

The “mystery website” framing is misleading when presented as current news. X.com is Musk’s reclaimed domain for X, the renamed Twitter platform; the defining migration occurred on May 17, 2024. Its connection to Musk’s 1999 X.com venture explains the name, while payments and an all-in-one app remain broader ambitions whose availability varies by product, country and account.
