Elon Musk’s Companies Hit Rock Bottom in 2025 Reputation Rankings

Tesla fell to 95th in the 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100, down from 63rd in 2024 and eighth in 2021. It ranked last for character and near the bottom for ethics and citizenship. SpaceX and X also showed deeply polarized public perceptions, although the survey measures reputation—not sales, profits or product performance.

How far did Tesla fall?

The 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100 placed Tesla 95th among the 100 companies most visible to Americans. Axios described the result as a plunge from eighth place in 2021 to 63rd in 2024 and then near the bottom in 2025.

Company or measure 2025 result Earlier comparison
Tesla overall reputation 95th of 100 63rd in 2024; 8th in 2021
Toyota overall reputation 4th of 100 Not stated
Ford overall reputation 60th of 100 Not stated
Tesla character Last among ranked companies Not stated
Tesla ethics and citizenship Near the bottom Not stated

These are 2025 survey placements. They show how respondents viewed the companies, not whether a company is solvent or whether every product is performing poorly.

What happened to Musk-linked companies?

SpaceX

Axios reported a 28.7-point gap between Republican and Democratic perceptions of SpaceX. SpaceX is primarily an aerospace contractor and launch provider, so fewer people encounter it as a consumer brand than Tesla. A reputation decline can therefore affect stakeholder confidence, recruiting, government relationships or commercial partnerships differently than it affects a carmaker’s sales.

#1 Best Overall

X

X, formerly Twitter, also scored poorly and had a longstanding weak position in the rankings. Its 2025 Republican-versus-Democratic perception gap was 29.5 points. Because X is a social platform, reputation can influence user participation, advertiser decisions and the willingness of organizations to communicate on it.

Tesla

Tesla had the largest reported partisan gap among the three companies, at 32.3 points. Its direct-to-consumer business makes public sentiment more commercially visible: buyers, owners, employees and investors can react to the brand in ways that are less immediate for a launch provider.

Did Elon Musk’s politics cause the decline?

The timing and pattern are consistent with increased political polarization around Musk, who aligned himself with President Trump. However, the Axios Harris results are observational. They identify an association between partisan identity and company perceptions; they do not prove that Musk’s political activity alone caused Tesla’s ranking movement.

Other possible influences include public disputes, brand controversies, changing customer expectations and views of company leadership. The poll does not assign a percentage of Tesla’s decline to any one cause.

What the Axios Harris ranking actually measures

  1. Visibility: A nationally representative awareness survey identifies the 100 companies most visible to Americans.
  2. Familiarity: A second survey measures how familiar respondents are with those companies.
  3. Reputational Quotient: People familiar with a company rate it across reputation dimensions, producing the RQ and overall ranking.

The Harris framework has been used since 1999. The 2025 methodology reports sampling precision of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points for each survey wave at a 95% confidence level. That margin describes sampling uncertainty; it does not turn a perception score into an operating-performance measure.

Does a bad reputation ranking mean Tesla is failing?

No. A low RQ is a warning about public perception, not a finding that a company is failing financially or operationally. It can still matter because reputation affects demand, employee recruitment, partnerships, financing conditions and the amount of scrutiny a company receives.

Separate operating figures provide context but are not outputs of the Harris survey. Futurism, summarizing Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 figures, reported sales down 37% in Europe and 9% in the United States, while net income fell 71%. Those figures may intensify concern about Tesla, but the reputation ranking cannot establish that the survey caused the declines or that the declines caused the ranking.

Why the same reputation score has different consequences

Company Primary exposure Potential business sensitivity
Tesla Consumer vehicles and energy products Brand sentiment can affect purchase consideration, owner loyalty and employee appeal.
SpaceX Launch services, aerospace contracts and satellites Government, institutional and commercial relationships may matter more than mass-market opinion.
X Social-media users and advertisers User activity, advertiser confidence and platform safety perceptions are central.

Consequently, it is misleading to treat a shared Musk association as evidence that all three companies face the same financial risk.

How to read the 2025 results

  • Use “ranked” or “survey respondents rated,” not “proved” or “caused.”
  • Keep the 2025 survey year attached to every placement.
  • Separate reputation dimensions—character, ethics, citizenship and trust—from financial results.
  • Check consumer exposure before estimating how a reputation shock could affect a company.
  • Treat partisan gaps as evidence of polarization, not as a complete explanation of the ranking.
