TechCrunch said Forbes reported that CEO Elon Musk fired Afshar, while Bloomberg had first reported his departure. Tesla, Musk and Afshar had not publicly confirmed the firing or explained why he left.
What the June report actually said
TechCrunch reported on June 26, 2025, that Afshar had reportedly been fired, attributing the firing claim to Forbes and noting Bloomberg’s earlier report of his departure. The article said the reason was not immediately known. It also said Tesla, Musk and Afshar did not respond to requests for comment.
That attribution matters: the available reporting established a media-reported departure, not an on-the-record Tesla announcement or a documented reason. “Fired” should therefore remain qualified as reported, rather than presented as a confirmed company statement.
Who is Omead Afshar?
TechCrunch described Afshar as Tesla’s vice president in charge of sales and manufacturing for North America and Europe. His remit was broader than a single-country sales-chief role, combining commercial and manufacturing responsibilities across two major regions.

On June 23, three days before the TechCrunch report, Afshar posted support for Tesla’s limited Austin robotaxi rollout on X: “Absolutely historic day for Tesla,” he wrote. “Thank you, Elon, for pushing us all!” That was a contemporaneous comment about the robotaxi launch, not an explanation of his later reported departure.
Afshar and Troy Jones were separate departures
Readers may conflate Afshar’s reported June departure with the later exit of Troy Jones. The reports describe different executives, dates and responsibilities.

| Executive | Role described in reporting | Reported event | Attribution and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omead Afshar | Vice president overseeing sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe | Reportedly fired or departed in June 2025 | TechCrunch on June 26, citing Forbes; Bloomberg had first reported his departure. No public reason or direct confirmation was reported. |
| Troy Jones | Tesla’s top North American sales executive | Left Tesla after 15 years, reported July 15, 2025 | Reuters, citing the Wall Street Journal. This was a later, separate personnel move. |
| Raj Jegannathan | IT executive | Reportedly running Tesla sales by July 18, 2025 | Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter; some Tesla employees interpreted the change as taking over Jones’s responsibilities. |
A Wall Street Journal document dated October 7, 2025, later said Tesla had parted ways with both Afshar and Jones since June. That later description does not supply a confirmed cause for either departure.
Timeline of the reported changes
- June 23, 2025: Afshar publicly supported Tesla’s limited Austin robotaxi rollout.
- June 26, 2025: TechCrunch reported Afshar’s reported firing, citing Forbes, and said Bloomberg had first reported his departure. The reason and an official confirmation were absent.
- July 15, 2025: Reuters, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported that Troy Jones had left Tesla after 15 years.
- July 18, 2025: Reuters reported that Raj Jegannathan had recently taken over sales responsibilities, based on people familiar with the matter.
- October 7, 2025: A Wall Street Journal document said Tesla had parted ways with both Afshar and Jones since June.
Why did Afshar leave Tesla?
The reviewed reporting does not establish a reason. Sales pressure, management disagreements or any other motive would be speculation unless Tesla, Afshar or a well-sourced on-record account confirms it. The absence of a public statement is not evidence of a particular cause.

What Tesla’s sales figures do—and do not—show
TechCrunch provided business context, but these figures should not be treated as proof that sales performance caused the personnel changes:
- TechCrunch reported that Tesla sold fewer cars in 2024 than in 2023.
- It reported a 71% year-over-year fall in Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 profits.
- It reported that Tesla’s European sales fell nearly 28% year over year in May 2025.
Those are different measures and periods, and TechCrunch’s figures were not independently checked here against Tesla’s original filings or data. Reuters also described Tesla as dealing with a sales decline in July 2025, without providing a comparable single figure in the cited report. None of these data points, by themselves, confirms why an executive left.

What investors and customers can reasonably conclude
- The June headline was about Afshar, whose reported remit covered North American and European sales and manufacturing.
- Jones’s North American sales departure was a separate July report, not a correction of Afshar’s identity.
- Jegannathan was later reported to be running sales, but the available accounts do not document a permanent organizational structure or a stated reason for the changes.
- The status and motive of Afshar’s departure remained based on attributed media reports rather than a Tesla announcement in the sources reviewed.
