Grokipedia is a real online encyclopedia operated by Elon Musk’s xAI and generated with the Grok language model. It launched as version 0.1 on October 27, 2025, with roughly 800,000 to 900,000 articles. Musk presented it as a more “truthful” and less biased alternative to Wikipedia, but independent evidence has not established that it is more accurate, neutral, or reliable. Treat it as a discovery tool and cross-check important claims against original sources.
What is Grokipedia?
Grokipedia is an encyclopedia-style website rather than simply a chatbot. xAI uses Grok to generate articles and mediate reviews and corrections. Ordinary readers generally cannot edit pages directly as they can on Wikipedia; suggestions for corrections or new articles go through the platform’s AI-controlled workflow. Launch coverage described it as version 0.1.
Reports put the launch inventory at approximately 800,000–900,000 articles. The Guardian reported a first-week count of 885,279, while English Wikipedia had more than seven million articles around the same period. Those are historical launch figures, not a current article count; the total can change rapidly.
Shortly after launch, the site reportedly experienced an outage as demand surged (Axios).

Why did Musk launch it?
Musk has repeatedly accused Wikipedia of political bias, centralization and “propaganda.” xAI framed Grokipedia as an effort to build a broader knowledge base and improve humanity’s understanding of the universe. Those statements explain the project’s motivation, not whether the allegations about Wikipedia are true.
Debates about Wikipedia’s bias depend on what is being measured: topic coverage, editor demographics, source choices, wording, or consensus rules. Research and commentary reach mixed conclusions, so “Wikipedia is biased” does not logically prove that Grokipedia is better (Manhattan Institute; PBS).
Grokipedia versus Wikipedia
| Issue | Grokipedia | Wikipedia |
|---|---|---|
| Primary authoring | AI-generated text using Grok | Volunteer human editors |
| Reader editing | Generally no direct editing; corrections are AI-mediated | Open editing under community rules |
| Review | Generation and checking occur through the same AI-centered system, with limited public detail | Discussion pages, revision histories, policies and dispute processes are public |
| Governance | Centralized under xAI | Wikimedia Foundation plus a distributed volunteer community |
| Sourcing | Quality varies by article and may mix reputable and weak sources | Citations and verifiability are core editorial requirements |
| Licensing | Mixed arrangements; some pages attribute Wikipedia material | Generally CC BY-SA 4.0 |
The important distinction is not simply machine versus human writing. It is whether readers can see, challenge and trace editorial decisions. Wikipedia is not bias-free, but its edits, arguments and policies are comparatively visible. Grokipedia’s centralized process is less transparent.
The copying controversy
Early reporting and academic comparisons found many Grokipedia entries copied or closely adapted from Wikipedia. Some pages carried attribution under Wikipedia’s Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. On October 31, 2025, Musk defended the practice, saying Grok had been instructed to compile and modify Wikipedia’s most important articles.

- Full of information for the striving herbalist, pharmacist,or essential oil maker.
That makes the provenance of each page important. Rewriting an existing encyclopedia can produce useful summaries, but it does not demonstrate independent research. It can also carry forward an old source’s mistakes while introducing new ones during rewriting (The Guardian; article-comparison study).
Is Grokipedia really “truthful” or less biased?
“Truthful” and “less biased” are claims associated with Musk and xAI, not established characteristics of the encyclopedia. The platform’s “fact-checked by Grok” label indicates a Grok-mediated process; it is not independent human verification. When the same model generates and approves text, the system can end up checking its own assumptions.
What reported examples show
- Journalists and researchers reported more right-leaning framing on some political and controversial subjects.
- Some pages used sources researchers considered low-credibility, including Kremlin material in coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
- Critics identified disputed framing involving January 6, immigration, gender and Musk’s own biography.
Individual pages are examples, not proof of the entire platform’s political orientation. Larger studies provide stronger, though still qualified, evidence. A comparison of 17,790 matched article pairs found a rightward shift in the political orientation of frequently cited news sources in dissimilar Grokipedia articles. Another study of 1,394 political biographies measured higher bias in Grokipedia than Wikipedia, but relied on large-language-model judges rather than complete human ground truth. A PNAS study found that Grokipedia diverges from Wikipedia selectively, particularly through source choice and framing (study of matched articles; LLM-based audit; PNAS).
The defensible conclusion is that Grokipedia changes who controls editorial decisions; it has not shown that error or bias has been removed.

Hallucinated or unsupported facts
Like other generative-AI systems, Grok can produce confident statements that are wrong, omit key context or attach citations that do not support the wording.
Circular fact-checking
AI generation followed by AI approval is not the same as an independent review board. A label can create more confidence than the underlying process warrants.
Uneven source quality
An article may combine high-quality journalism or scholarship with social-media posts, fringe material or propaganda. Readers must inspect what each citation actually says.
Opaque revisions and concentrated control
Wikipedia exposes granular edit histories, talk pages and community disputes. Grokipedia offers less visibility into how a page was changed, ranked or approved, and a centrally controlled system can reflect its owner’s priorities more directly.

False precision and inherited errors
AI rewrites can preserve mistakes from copied Wikipedia text, introduce fresh errors, or make uncertain claims sound settled. More articles do not necessarily mean better coverage.
Where Grokipedia may help
- Finding unfamiliar names, terminology and possible search terms.
- Getting a quick overview before opening original sources.
- Comparing how an AI system and Wikipedia frame a disputed subject.
- Producing a readable starting summary or translation.
These are potential conveniences, not evidence of superior accuracy.
Where it is a poor authority
- Academic citations and literature reviews.
- Medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
- Breaking news and politically sensitive claims.
- Biographies of living people.
- Topics involving extremist, conspiratorial or propagandistic sources.
For those uses, consult primary documents, scholarly literature, official statistics and multiple reputable news organizations. Google Scholar, PubMed, Crossref and government data portals are designed for source verification (Google Scholar; PubMed; Crossref; Data.gov).
A practical verification checklist
- Read the entire Grokipedia entry, including warnings and cited links.
- Open the underlying sources and confirm that they support the exact claim.
- For important facts, find a primary source such as a court record, government release, scientific paper or company filing.
- Compare with Wikipedia and at least one independent source, without assuming either encyclopedia is automatically correct.
- Check dates, especially on fast-changing subjects.
- Do not treat “fact-checked by Grok” as a substitute for independent verification.
The practical verdict
Wikipedia’s openness does not make it perfectly neutral, and Grokipedia’s use of AI does not make it automatically biased. Their more consequential difference is governance: Wikipedia exposes a large amount of human discussion and revision history, while Grokipedia places more authority in xAI’s model and centralized process.

Best Value
Use Grokipedia as a supplementary lead generator or comparison point. For any claim that affects research, money, health, law, reputation or public reporting, follow its citations to primary or independently vetted sources and never cite Grokipedia alone.
